Shoigu Swapped: #Russian state media is reporting that #Putin has proposed Andrei Belousov, the former Russian Deputy Prime Minister, as a potential replacement to Sergei Shoigu as the Russian Minister of Defence, who has seemingly been removed from the position. Shoigu is reportedly to replace Nikolai Patrushev as the Secretary of the National Security Council, a notable demotion within Russian politics. The exact circumstances of Shoigu’s demotion are unclear, however Shoigu has repeatedly been accused of incompetence by a number of critics, including former Wagner head Yevgeny Prigozhin, who headed a ‘rebellion’ last year seeking Shoigu’s replacement. 🇮🇱 🇵🇸 #NEW #Israel's war cabinet has unanimously approved expanding combat operations in #Rafah, setting the stage for a full ground assault into the city. The IDF said four of their soldiers were killed today and that scores of Hamas and PIJ militants were killed in Rafah. Heavy artillery and gunfire continued from Thursday to Friday, say AP correspondents. This comes as Israeli forces began ground operations over the past several days to secure the Rafah border crossing between #Egypt and #Palestine and set up positions along the eastern outskirts of the city amid continued calls of civilian evacuations. Meanwhile, airstrikes have been underway across the area against what the IDF has described as “terrorist infrastructure,”, civilian casualties have also been reported in these strikes. Via theatlasnews.co --- Over a million Palestinians previously have fled to Rafah to escape fighting elsewhere, with many packed into U.N.-run shelters or squalid tent camps. The city on the border with Egypt and is a crucial hub for bringing in food, medicine, fuel, and other goods. The UN’s Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs says about 110,000 people have fled Rafah and that food and fuel supplies in the city are critically low. Georgios Petropoulos, an OCHA official working in Rafah, said the two main crossings near the city remain closed, cutting off supplies, medical evacuations, and the movement of humanitarian staff. The U.N.'s World Food Program will run out of food for southern Gaza by Saturday he said, adding that 30,000 people were leaving Rafah daily in search of safety, but that humanitarian workers had no supplies to help them set up camp in a new place. “We simply have no tents, we have no blankets, no bedding, none of the items that you would expect a population on the move to be able to get from the humanitarian system,” Rafah was the main point of entry for fuel needed to power vehicles, as well as the generators on which hospitals and water treatment plants rely. 🇷🇺 🇺🇦 #Russian vehicles were seen destroyed, and troops were killed in #Kharkiv assaults after response by #Ukrainian forces to the border crossings. Further mustering of forces to the newly opened northeast front by Russia is expected. At least several BMPs and a Ural truck, along with separate infantry groupings, have been ID'd as being destroyed. Other fires and smoke as a result of reportedly destroyed equipment groups can be seen on the skyline. Several Ukrainian POWs have been claimed to have been taken in the region as well. Before the ground invasion forces, Russian artillery strikes and UAV attacks targeted Vovchansk in Kharkiv and other Ukrainian settlements nearby, as shown on the second video. Ukrainian emergency channels have announced evacuations for civilians from the border area where Russian forces are attacking. At least two civilians were killed, and five more were injured during heavy Russian shelling of border settlements, said Oleh Synehubov, governor of Kharkiv region. This comes at the same time as unconfirmed reports from Ukraine that the Russian military may try to create a DMZ buffer of 10 kilometers by pushing their forces past the LOC into Ukraine reports Reuters citing unnamed Ukrainian defense officials. So far, Russian forces have advanced approximately 1km towards Vovchansk in the northeast. @ourwarstoday

Russian forces have launched an early morning assault against the Kharkiv Oblast, which saw primary incursions over the border into the villages of Pylna, Strilecha, and Borysivka, along with reports of incursions in the area of Pletenivka near the city of Vovchansk. DeepstateUA images show the first ID'd destroyed Russian column in the attack. In a statement, the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense said that “these attacks have been repelled; battles of varying intensity continue,” adding that “Reserve units have been deployed to strengthen the defense in this area of the front. The Defense Forces of Ukraine continue to hold back the enemy’s offensive.” So far, there has not been any official statements by Russia on the situation. The extent of the operation, as well as its tactical objectives, remain unclear, however, this does not appear to be part of a larger, immediate offensive campaign at this time. One Ukrainian military source claimed to AFP that Russian forces are attempting to create a buffer zone along the border to prevent attacks into Russian territory. Russian milbloggers have described the assault as “reconnaissance,” which could be setting the stage for combat operations to support an upcoming Russian offensive in the Kupyansk direction. While cross border raids and attacks between Ukraine and Russia have been commonplace, this latest operation potentially marks the largest ground assault against the area since Russian forces were pushed out of Kharkiv following the Fall 2022 counteroffensive by Ukrainian forces. 🇺🇸 🇮🇱 🇵🇸 #NEW U.S. paused Israel weapons shipment due to Rafah: #UnitedStates defense secretary President Joe Biden's decision to hold up delivery of high payload munitions to #Israel was taken over a possible Israeli offensive in #Rafah, #Palestine, that Washington believes could put Palestinian civilians at risk, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said on Wednesday. Austin was the first senior Biden administration official to publicly explain what appeared to be a possible shift in U.S. policy towards arming Israel. Biden had pledged his complete support for Israel following the Oct. 7 attack on the country by Palestinian militant group Hamas, and he sent Washington's closest Middle East ally weaponry worth billions of dollars. Austin stressed that the U.S. commitment to Israel's defense remained "ironclad" and that the decision on suspending the munitions shipment was not final. Still, he said the U.S. preference would be that "no major combat take place in Rafah" and that at a minimum any Israeli operation must safeguard civilian lives. "We've been very clear... from the very beginning that Israel shouldn't launch a major attack into Rafah without accounting for and protecting the civilians that are in that battlespace," Austin told a Senate hearing. "And again, as we have assessed the situation, we have paused one shipment of high payload munitions," he told a Senate hearing. "We've not made a final determination on how to proceed with that shipment." Israel has threatened a major assault on Rafah to defeat thousands of Hamas fighters it says are holed up there, but Western nations and the United Nations say a full-scale attack on the city would triggger a humanitarian catastrophe. –Reuters

Israeli airstrikes in the Rafah area continue to be reported, Hamas has told Al-Arabiya they are still open to peace deals, including discussions with the U.S. and that their delegation is still in Cairo. They say also Netanyahu is aware of the renewed peace deal efforts, but that they will not accept any agreement where Israel or a third-party controls the Rafah border crossings.

🇮🇱 🇵🇸 #Israel has seized control of the #Palestine side of the #Rafah border crossing between Egypt and the #Gaza Strip, effectively isolating Gaza from the world. Via theatlasnews.co Israel occupied the crossing point Tuesday after claiming it was being used for “terror purposes,” and that Hamas had launched attacks from the area of the crossing, including Hamas’ attack on Sunday that led to the deaths of four Israeli soldiers, and injury of ten others. The Rafah border crossing was the primary entry point of aid into Gaza. Seizing control of the crossing gives Israel complete control over what enters or leaves Gaza, and completely isolates Gaza from any foreign nation. The crossing is now closed. According to the Palestinian Ministry of Health in Gaza, this closure prevented 120 patients from transferring out of Gaza into Egypt. None of Gaza’s hospitals are functioning at full capacity, with a number shutting down completely. As such, Egypt has been accepting hospital patients through the Rafah crossing. Patient transfers are now blocked. It is unclear when the crossing will open, and if the rules will change regarding what leaves and enters. The seizure has been condemned by Egypt, among a number of other nations. US State Dept Spox, Matthew Miller, said the occupation was a “legitimate goal” by Israel in order to deprive Hamas control of the crossing. However adding "That said, we want to see the crossing open, and we’re gonna work to try to get it back open”. The spokesman reiterated that the US was opposed to an Israeli invasion of Rafah, but that it did not believe the seizure of the crossing to be a part of that invasion. Israel on Monday ordered the evacuation of areas of eastern Rafah, amounting to approximately 100,000 people. Soon after, Israel has launched an extensive bombing campaign on areas within eastern Rafah, claiming to have killed a number of Hamas militants. 🇮🇱 🇵🇸 #BREAKING Israeli Forces Targeting Rafah Border Crossings, Gunfire Exchanged Israeli military forces, according to reports by Al-Arabiya that quote reporters and eyewitnesses, have begun launching artillery and air attacks by plane upon the Rafah and Kerem Abu Salem border crossings into Gaza, Palestine, close to the Egyptian border. Air attacks on neighborhoods near the area have been reported as well. Additionally reported is that IDF armored vehicles are deployed in the area around the crossings and are also targeting buildings with shells. Heavy gunfire and “violent clashes” east of Rafah are also reported by Al-Arabiya correspondents as well as Al-Qahera News who also captured video of the start of exchanges. This is likely the beginning of an IDF offensive to capture territory so as to cut off crossings into Egypt and then begin a push northeast into Rafah. Via theatlasnews.co

🇮🇱 🇵🇸 #IDF Invasion of #Rafah Imminent: The IDF has began dropping leaflets on eastern areas of Rafah, and published maps online ordering civilians within the area to evacuate. The map shows red zones within Rafah, and areas within Gaza that civilians are to evacuate to in order to escape an impending invasion. Israeli Minister of Defence, Yoav Gallant, reportedly held an overnight phone conversation with the US Secretary of Defence, Lloyd Austin, in which he stated that Israel had “no choice” but to invade Rafah. The US has stated on multiple occasions that they are opposed to the invasion. US and Israeli officials have clashed on the issue on multiple occasions. There is no definitive time that the invasion will begin, however Israeli strikes on areas in and around Rafah have been increasing lately, and with evacuations beginning, it is likely to be soon. Several weeks ago Netanyahu stated he had set a date for the invasion. The Israeli ground invasion of Rafah has been on the horizon for many weeks now. While Israel has remained insistent that it is a necessity, many different nations, including many traditional Israeli allies, have condemned the prospect. Rafah, which lies in the very south of Gaza, was previously established earlier in the war by Israel to be a safe zone. As such, it has become host to approximately 1.4 million people; over half of Gaza’s population. Additionally, Rafah is a key basing ground for humanitarian operations in Gaza. It is situated on the Egypt/Gaza border, and is the primary entry point for trucks entering Gaza. It is further host to a number of UNRWA camps. The UNRWA, as well as UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, have stated an Israeli operation in Rafah would be the “nail in the coffin” for humanitarian operations in Gaza, which were already severely harmed. Israel has stated that the operation is necessary in order to destroy Hamas’ last remaining battalions. Netanyahu has claimed there are approximately four battalions left in Gaza, numbering thousands of militants. Furthermore, Israel believes many of the remaining approximately 130 hostages (of which, over 30 are believed to have died) are being held within Rafah. The operation has been controversial due to the extremely high civilian presence within Gaza, as well as the effect an operation is sure to have upon humanitarian operations. The US, among others, have claimed that the operation would be too costly in civilian lives. It is unclear how effective evacuations will be in getting civilians out of harms way. Previously, in other evacuations, some civilians chose not to evacuate due to attacks and bombings ongoing on supposed evacuation routes, as well as within ‘safe zones’. The invasion also notably comes after Israel refused to send a delegation to ongoing hostage/ceasefire negotiations in Cairo, Egypt. Israel had initially refused to send a delegation until Hamas gave an answer concerning a temporary ceasefire proposal they had made. A Hamas official reportedly stated that they were “close” to reaching a hostage deal, however the evacuation, and impending invasion, would cause hostage deal negotiations to cease. It is unlikely that the two were close to securing a deal, however. Israel and Hamas have presented a series of absolutes in their negotiations, absolutes which the other side has determined unacceptable. Most prominently, Hamas is seeking a permanent ceasefire, and the withdrawal of Israeli troops from Gaza. Israel, on the other hand, is seeking only a temporary ceasefire, after which they will continue the war in order to “destroy Hamas.” Negotiations have been ongoing for many weeks, without any meaningful ground being made. At least 34,735 Palestinians have been killed and 78,108 injured in Israel's military offensive on Gaza, the enclave's health ministry said in a statement on Monday. Via theatlasnews.co
