Tales from the paper mill: OK, I thought of one more. When the holes in the swiss cheese line up. Calendar stacks are used to smash the paper flat as a last step of production. They are up to 30ft long and 3ft in diameter. They likely have hydraulic zones inside them that can deflect the shell by a few tenths (ten thou). There's cooling water connections, there's hydraulic connections, there's a lot going on at the bearing housings with all the rotary couplers. The hydraulic couplers always leak. We also have a series of heaters along the length of one of the rolls. Heating the shell in one spot makes it larger and it smashes that spot on the sheet of paper a little harder flattening it more. Today these heaters are induction coils. Back in the day they were electric heating elements like in your water heater at home and we blew air across them. This particular machine had a 75hp blower in the basement funneled into a 12inch duct. It was quite a lot of air. On this particular machine, they also had a bar code marker on the sheet edge that used a shop vac to suck up hte overspray from the ink. Of course this is a brushed AC motor, the "perfect" thing for a dusty and oily environment. Now all the pieces are in place.... Oil drips constatntly from the calendar stacks nad makes a mixure of oil and cellulose fibers. Oil happened to drip in the brushes of that shopvac's head and started a fire. That fire spread quickly... within 30 seconds it was burning the floor under that 12" flexible duct that was made of oilsoaked plastic coated canvas. The fire burned thru that thin fabric in about a hot second and now 75hp blower air is feeding the fire. Now it is RAPIDLY spreading. Caught the entire floor on fire inside the machine and got so hot it melted all the 480v SO cord inside a wire duct. Took us 16 hours two temporarily rewire it... 180 heaters, 180 SO cords... and a temporary fabricated wire trough. All becuase someone didn't think about oil dust and sparks from a shop vac.
