📰 Gravity-based batteries Alongside the chilly, steel-gray water of the docks here stands what looks like a naked, four-story elevator shaft—except in place of the elevator is a green, 50-ton iron weight, suspended by steel cables. Little by little, electric motors hoist the weight halfway up the shaft; it is now a giant, gravity-powered battery, storing potential energy that can be released when needed. And that moment is now: With a metallic moan, the weight inches back down the shaft. Reversing direction, the motors become electric generators, sending up to 250 kilowatts of power back to the grid. For peak power, the weight can descend in 11 seconds—but for testing purposes, it moves just a few meters at “creep speed,” says Douglas Hitchcock, project engineer at Gravitricity. The company announced this week that its small-scale demonstrator is now operational, capable of switching between drawing energy from the grid and sending it back in a matter of seconds. 🔭 OpenAstroTracker OpenAstroTracker is an open-source DIY star tracker which can be build from simple, affordable and 3D printed parts. The main intention behind this device is to provide an affordable possibility to enter the world of astrophotography. OpenAstroTracker is an equatorial mount which "compensates for Earth's rotation by having one rotational axis parallel to the Earth's axis of rotation". You can mount a camera (mostly a DLSR or DSLM) on top of it and it rotates with the same speed as our earth rotation in order to remove stars movement relatively to the camera and allow longer exposures this way. The mount is being controlled by an Arduino. The Arduino is controlling multiple stepper motors which in turn rotate the camera mount. The mount provides multiple options for control: LCD Keypad, USB Serial connection, Wi-Fi. More information: Official website Wiki page Github page #projects #3d_modeling

💻 5 Skills Every Developer Needs for the Future There are specific skills that every embedded developer will need in 2021 and beyond. ▫️ Integrated, Automated Testing Automated testing tools, harnesses, and CI/CD platforms have advanced to the point that developers need to leverage them into their development process. ▫️ Machine Learning Machine learning may not be a technique that can be applied today to the products that the reader is developing, but that doesn’t mean that a blind eye should be turned to them. Gaining a solid foundation in ML will be far more effective than waiting and leveraging on a project while still learning about the technology. ▫️ Security The potential negative impact on a company for not having a secure product can be devastating. ▫️ RTOS Application Design Understanding the design patterns, best practices, and techniques will be critical to successfully launching a product in a timely manner. ▫️ Debugging Finding & preventing bugs. 📟 Mini USB Arduino You'll learn how to construct a Mini USB Arduino One of the factors driving the platform's rapid growth is why it is open-source and open-hardware, meaning anyone can create their own Arduino. Arduino continues to reach more and more people daily. With this possibility of creating new cards, we present the Mini USB Arduino. It is a small Arduino, which was developed using an ATtiny85 chip. In this article, we will release the downloadable files and leave them in our PCBWay repository. More information... #projects #arduino #boards #electronics

📟 Recreating PDP-11/70 with Raspberry Pi The PiDP-11 is a modern replica of Digital Equipment Corporation’s influential PDP-11 minicomputer. Before we had a computer on every desk and in every home–and long before they were in every pocket–computers were large, intimidating, and locked in special rooms at universities and corporations. The PDP series paved the way for making computers more accessible. PDP stood for Programmed Data Processor, and this distinguished line of computers was produced from 1957 to 1990. Each PDP model was numbered sequentially from the one to sixteen (skipping PDP-2 and unlucky 13). The PDP-11 was DEC’s first 16-bit computer, and cost $20,000 when released in 1970. Reportedly, 600,000 units were sold over its long life, and it was the tool of choice for countless computing innovations, including the creation of UNIX and the C programming language. 💻 3 Strategies for Handling Errors in Embedded Software It is very tempting to assume that a system will behave as perfectly
💻 3 Strategies for Handling Errors in Embedded Software It is very tempting to assume that a system will behave as perfectly in the field as it does on the engineering bench. During development, embedded software is written under the best of conditions. The developer knows how the system is supposed to work and development usually proceeds smoothly. However, as thousands of devices start to get into the hands of users, the chances that the unexpected will happen becomes statistically more probable. In today’s post, let’s explore the strategies that developers need to write software that can handle unexpected errors. The way that a developer approaches writing their software is what determines whether their system will recover from errors gracefully or whether it will blowup metaphorically in the user’s face. The key is having the right development attitude that considers what can go wrong and implementing the recovery mechanism while the software is being written. More information... #articles #software

📟 Lightning Detector In this project we'll create a small device that alerts you to nearby lightning strikes. The total cost of all materials in this project will be cheaper than purchasing a commercial lightning detector, and you'll get to hone your circuit-making skills in the process! The sensor used in this project can detect lightning strikes up to 40 km away, and is also capable of determining the distance of a strike to within a tolerance of 4 km. While this is a reliable sensor, you should never depend upon it to warn you of lightning strikes if you're outdoors. More information... #projects #sensor #3d_modeling
