Shastri had two sisters, Kailashi Devi and Sundari Devi. Unfortunately, Shastri’s father died when he was just 1 year old. Along with his mother and sisters, he shifted to his maternal grandfather’s place where he was raised. He married Lalita Devi in May 1928. Lalita hailed from Mirzapur, U.P. It was an arranged marriage that was fixed by their parents. Trees: Our Best Friend Ans. Trees are man's best friends. They are very useful to us. Trees give us medicine, rubber, gum, fruits, vegetables and flowers. They give us wood for fuel. Timber is used to build houses and make furniture. Paper is also made from the bark (છાલ) of trees. We get many medicines from the fruits, leaves and roots of trees. We get spices and oil, too. from trees. Birds build their nests in trees. Even animals depend on trees for their food. Trees give us cool shade. Trees make our surroundings beautiful. They keep the environment clean. Trees take in carbon dioxide and give out oxygen. Thus they purify the air. Trees attract rain clouds. They also prevent soil erosion. Trees are our natural wealth. Therefore, we must not cut trees. If we cut trees, land will soon turn into desert. We would be deprived of pure air, water, food and clothing. Even the government has realised the importance of trees. So a tree plantation programme known as Van Mahotsav is held every year.
