CHEMICALLY CONTAMINATED SITES GET LEGAL FRAMEWORK The Environment Ministry has announced new rules called the Environment Protection Management of Contaminated Sites Rules 2025. These rules provide a clear legal process to clean up areas where harmful chemicals have polluted soil and water. India has 103 such contaminated sites. Only seven have started cleanup so far. Many of these sites became polluted years ago when there were no proper waste management rules. Now, under the new rules: District officials must send reports twice a year on suspected contaminated sites State Boards will check these sites and complete an initial assessment in 90 days A detailed study will then be done in 3 months to confirm chemical contamination If contamination is found, the site will be marked, and public entry restricted Experts will prepare a cleanup plan Those responsible for the pollution must pay for the cleanup If they cannot, the Centre and the State will share the cost If contamination causes death or serious harm, criminal action can be taken under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita 2023. Note: Pollution from radioactive waste, mining, oil spills in the sea, or city dump sites is covered under other laws. This is a big step to ensure polluted land and water bodies are identified and made safe again.
