DME is synthetically produced and can be used in specially designed compression ignition engines similar to diesel engines. It possesses a very high cetane number, which means it ignites easily under compression conditions, making it highly suitable for diesel-type engines.
One of the most important characteristics of DME is its clean-burning nature. It emits extremely low levels of soot, sulfur oxides, particulate matter, and nitrogen oxides compared to conventional diesel fuel.
Under normal atmospheric conditions, DME exists as a colorless gas. However, it can be liquefied under moderate pressure, similar to LPG, which makes storage and transportation feasible.
Its thermal efficiency is comparable to conventional diesel fuels, allowing it to function effectively in transportation and agricultural machinery sectors.
DME can be produced from a wide range of feedstocks including natural gas, coal, biomass, municipal waste, and methanol. This versatility enhances its strategic value in energy diversification.
It is also extensively used in the chemical industry and as an aerosol propellant because of its favorable chemical properties.
India’s interest in DME is linked to reducing dependence on imported fossil fuels, improving air quality, and developing indigenous clean fuel technologies.
Pilot projects involving ONGC and CSIR laboratories indicate growing institutional support for DME-based energy systems.
Globally, DME is viewed as a transitional low-emission fuel that may contribute to cleaner transportation and industrial applications.
Q . Consider the following statements regarding Debt Recovery Tribunals (DRTs):
They were established under the Recovery of Debts Due to Banks and Financial Institutions Act, 1993.
DRTs adjudicate debt recovery disputes involving banks and financial institutions.
DRTs deal exclusively with criminal offences related to financial fraud.
Which of the statements given above is/are correct?
(a) 1 only
(b) 2 and 3 only
(c) 1 and 2 only
(d) 1, 2 and 3
Answer: (c) 1 and 2 only
Explanation:
Debt Recovery Tribunals (DRTs) were established as specialized quasi-judicial institutions to ensure speedy recovery of debts owed to banks and financial institutions. Their creation formed an important part of India’s banking and financial sector reforms.
Statement 1 is correct. DRTs were established under the Recovery of Debts Due to Banks and Financial Institutions Act, 1993. The legislation was introduced to reduce delays in loan recovery cases and strengthen financial discipline in the banking system.
Statement 2 is correct. The primary role of DRTs is to adjudicate debt recovery disputes involving banks and financial institutions. These tribunals generally handle cases involving debt amounts above ₹20 lakh.
Statement 3 is not correct. DRTs do not deal with criminal offences or financial fraud investigations. Their jurisdiction is civil and financial in nature, relating to debt recovery and enforcement of secured assets.
The tribunals also hear Securitisation Applications under the SARFAESI Act, where borrowers challenge actions taken by banks for recovery of secured assets.
Each DRT is headed by a Presiding Officer qualified to be a District Judge, ensuring judicial competence in handling complex financial matters.
The tribunals possess powers similar to civil courts in matters such as summoning witnesses, examining evidence, compelling production of documents, and conducting ex parte proceedings.
Debt Recovery Appellate Tribunals (DRATs) function as appellate bodies over DRT decisions.
Before the establishment of DRTs, banks often faced prolonged litigation in ordinary civil courts, leading to delays in recovery and accumulation of non-performing assets.
Efficient debt recovery mechanisms are essential for maintaining liquidity and stability within the banking system.
The functioning of DRTs has become increasingly important with the expansion of credit markets and banking operations in India.
BIS develops Indian Standards across diverse sectors including electronics, healthcare, engineering, construction, food safety, and environmental systems.
Its hallmarking and certification systems help consumers identify products meeting quality and safety standards.
Standardization improves industrial efficiency, facilitates international trade, reduces product incompatibility, and strengthens consumer confidence.
BIS certification schemes also help Indian manufacturers align products with international standards, thereby supporting exports and global competitiveness.
In recent years, BIS has expanded into emerging sectors such as medical assistive technologies, renewable energy systems, and digital product safety.
The organization contributes significantly to quality assurance, regulatory governance, and economic modernization.
Q. Consider the following statements regarding Hantavirus:
It is primarily transmitted through airborne particles contaminated with rodent excreta.
Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome mainly affects the respiratory system.
A universally effective antiviral cure for hantavirus infection currently exists.
Which of the statements given above is/are correct?
(a) 1 and 2 only
(b) 2 only
(c) 1 and 3 only
(d) 1, 2 and 3
Answer: (a) 1 and 2 only
Explanation:
Hantavirus is a rodent-borne viral infection that can cause severe disease in humans. The disease has gained global attention because of its high mortality rate and potential to cause sudden respiratory or renal complications.
Statement 1 is correct. Humans usually become infected after inhaling aerosolized particles contaminated with rodent urine, saliva, or droppings. This commonly occurs in enclosed spaces contaminated by rodents.
Statement 2 is correct. Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome (HPS) primarily affects the respiratory system and can rapidly progress to severe breathing difficulties and pulmonary edema.
Statement 3 is not correct. There is currently no universally effective antiviral cure specifically approved for hantavirus infection. Treatment is mainly supportive and includes oxygen support, fluid management, and intensive medical care.
Another important hantavirus-related illness is Hemorrhagic Fever with Renal Syndrome (HFRS), which primarily affects the kidneys and circulatory system.
The disease generally begins with flu-like symptoms such as fever, fatigue, muscle pain, and headaches before progressing to severe complications.
Unlike many infectious diseases, hantavirus is not commonly transmitted through casual person-to-person contact.
Rodent control and sanitation remain the primary preventive measures against infection.
Public health authorities recommend avoiding activities that disturb dried rodent droppings because such activities can aerosolize infectious particles.
Environmental changes, urban expansion, and climate variations can influence rodent populations and alter the risk of outbreaks.
Hantavirus illustrates the growing importance of zoonotic disease surveillance in global public health systems.

Q. Which of the following best describes Mission Drishti?
(a) India’s first indigenous reusable launch vehicle mission
(b) The world’s first OptoSAR Earth observation satellite integrating EO and SAR technologies
(c) A dedicated lunar orbiter developed jointly with Japan
(d) A navigation satellite intended exclusively for maritime operations
Answer: (b) The world’s first OptoSAR Earth observation satellite integrating EO and SAR technologies
Explanation:
Mission Drishti is a landmark achievement in India’s growing private space ecosystem. Developed by Bengaluru-based startup GalaxEye, it represents a major innovation in remote sensing and Earth observation technology.
Mission Drishti is recognized as the world’s first OptoSAR satellite. This means it integrates Electro-Optical (EO) imaging and Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) imaging into a single platform.
Electro-optical sensors capture detailed visual imagery during daylight and under clear atmospheric conditions. However, they face operational limitations during cloudy weather, night-time, smoke, or heavy rainfall.
Synthetic Aperture Radar overcomes these limitations by using radar pulses instead of visible light. SAR systems can generate images regardless of weather conditions or time of day.
The integration of EO and SAR capabilities into one satellite provides continuous, all-weather Earth observation capability with improved accuracy and reliability.
The satellite weighs approximately 190 kilograms and offers imagery with 1.5 metre resolution, making it highly useful for precision geospatial applications.
Its applications include border surveillance, disaster management, infrastructure monitoring, agriculture analysis, defence intelligence, and insurance assessment.
Mission Drishti also demonstrates the increasing maturity of India’s private space sector following regulatory reforms encouraging private participation in space technology.
The mission was launched aboard SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket from California, highlighting the global integration of India’s emerging space startups.
The mission is technologically important because combining EO and SAR systems in a compact satellite platform presents substantial engineering challenges related to power, imaging synchronization, and data processing.
