Dear All: The Civil Engineering Department of Birla Institute of Technology is organizing an International Virtual Workshop on Advanced Analysis and Design of Steel Structures in association with the US-India Education Foundation (USIEF), SEI Graduate Student Chapter of ASCE at BITS Pilani, and the Institute for Steel Development and Growth (INSDAG), Kolkatta. during December 13-15, 2022. About the workshop: This workshop is a part of a collaborative research project between Birla Institute of Technology & Science (BITS) Pilani, Rajasthan India, and the US- India Education Foundation, organized under the aegis of Partnership 2020: US-India Higher Education Cooperation Grants. This three-day workshop aims at presentations and deliberations on the advancement in the analysis and design of steel structures. Multiple important topics such as fire resistance, fatigue strength, and stability analysis will be touched upon during this e-certification program along with numerical examples to support the theory. Emphasis will be on making full use of composite construction to achieve cost-effective and high-performing structures, including those in industrial structures. Therefore, researchers and practicing engineers working in the broad field of design of civil infrastructures can significantly gain by keeping abreast of the latest trends and developments in the field of steel structures for the design of high-performance steel structural systems. Dear Friends,   As you are aware about the recent collapse of the suspension bridge over Macchuriver in Morbi, Gujarat resulted in a huge tragedy of the irreparable loss of human lives. This tragedy is unthinkable and has left the entire nation in a state of shock and sorrow.    In view of this IAStructE is organizing a Panel Discussion on "Failure of Morbi Suspension Bridge – Are We Learning Lessons From Such Tragedies?" with some of the distinguished structural engineering experts, both from the industry and academia to discuss why such failures happened and how we can mitigate the risk of such failures in the future. The Panel Discussion is scheduled to be held on Wednesday, 16 November 2022 from 04.00 PM to 06:00 PM (IST).  The participants attending the panel discussion would be enriched and will gain deeper insight by listening to the views of the expert panelists on the subject.
