THE PROPHET’S MEDITATION Meditation is not a topic believers should be ignorant of. When you read through the Bible, you’ll see that meditation was a regular practice—not just for the prophets, but also for the apostles. In the book of Timothy, Apostle Paul, who was a spiritual father to Timothy, instructed him to meditate. Every believer should learn to meditate, because anyone who doesn’t meditate on the right things cannot be properly used by God. In this teaching, I want to show you how to meditate—not just any kind of meditation, but the kind that the prophets practiced. This means we are learning from their example. Let’s study two prophets as our case study: 1. ABRAHAM Genesis 15:5 (KJV) And he brought him forth abroad, and said, Look now toward heaven, and tell the stars, if thou be able to number them: and he said unto him, So shall thy seed be. Abraham’s meditation started from something physical and visible, and led into something spiritual and unseen. When he looked up at the stars, he wasn’t just seeing shining lights—he was seeing a picture of his future. God used what Abraham could see to help him imagine what he couldn’t yet see. This wasn’t astrology; it was prophetic meditation. Abraham saw the stars, but what stayed in his heart was the image of countless descendants. How can you do this today? Ask yourself: What do I want to see in my life? Then surround yourself with pictures, scriptures, and reminders of that reality. Every time you look at those things, they should stir something inside you. Pastor David Ibiyeomie once shared how he circled every verse in the Gospels where it said “multitudes followed Jesus” while trusting God for church growth. He also placed pictures of large crowds around him. Today, he’s living in the reality he meditated on. Do you want to grow in the prophetic? Do you want to walk in the supernatural? Then start painting the right mental pictures around you. 2. DAVID There are two things we learn from David: - When he meditate. - What he meditated on. Psalm 1:2 (KJV) says the blessed man meditates day and night because his delight is in the law of the Lord. Let’s see more of how David did this: Psalm 63:6 (KJV) When I remember thee upon my bed, and meditate on thee in the night watches. David was someone who made time to meditate at night. He would think deeply about God before sleeping, and sometimes chose to stay awake just to meditate. But what exactly did he meditate on? Psalm 77:11–12 (KJV) I will remember the works of the Lord: surely I will remember thy wonders of old. I will meditate also of all thy work, and talk of thy doings. David focused his mind on the miracles and mighty works of God. But he didn’t just think about them—he also spoke about them. This means true meditation should move you to speak the right words. As you think deeply on God’s wonders, your mouth will begin to align with His truth. David meditated often on the miracles written in scripture. We can do the same. You can make a simple plan: For example, say to yourself, “Every night this month, before I sleep, I will meditate on the resurrection of Jesus” or “I will think about God’s supernatural provision.” You’ll find that the more you do this, the stronger your faith becomes—and when you pray, you will see faster results. HOW TO MEDITATE Joshua 1:8 (KJV) This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night... for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success. To meditate simply means to think deeply on something. For believers, the “book of the law” today refers to the Holy Scriptures. Here’s a simple way to meditate: - First, start by saying a verse to yourself again and again. - As you keep repeating it, your mind will begin to focus on it. - If you are a visual person, you’ll begin to see the verse like a picture in your heart. - Sometimes, this can even lead into a vision or a trance. Be consistent. Meditation is easier and stronger at night because there are fewer distractions.
