The stock market is 70% likely to go up on any year
In any given year, the stock market is more likely to go up than to go down. For instance, in the last 100 years, the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) was up 70% of the year.
And in the last 40 years, the Standard & Poor’s 500 (S&P500) was up 77% of the years.
This is a very significant difference.
Of course, this is only historical data. But this has been going on for 100 years. There is a good chance that this continues.
It is one of the reasons why Dollar Cost Averaging (DCA) is not a great idea. Indeed, DCA is betting that the market will go down. But the stock market is not likely to do so.
