Three Centuries of Hindu Business Dominance in Muscat: An Overall Assessment   The final episode of this series provides an overall assessment of the three centuries of Hindu commercial dominance in Muscat and shows how they created and maintained their culture in a Mleccha country.   The Bania community especially, was represented by the most respected man in the community. His title by itself showed its deep cultural moorings in Bharatavarsha. He was known as the Nagar Seth or Mukhi, and represented the community in political matters.   The Hindu community celebrated all its major festivals like Holi, Janmashtami and Deepavali with the same fervour as they did in Bharatavarsha. A large platter of the best food would be sent to the Sultan’s palace. However, Hindus politely declined to eat the food that the Sultan offered in return, if it was prepared by non-Hindu cooks.   The Hindu community also maintained a Gaushala. The Rise and Rise of Kutchi Bhāṭiyās in Muscat   The Kutchi Bhatiyas were some of the most daring and enterprising businessmen to emerge from the Mandvi Port, Gujarat. They eventually dominated the economy of Muscat in the 18th and 19th centuries and had a powerful influence in the politics of Oman.   A Kutchi Bhatiya named Gopal Bhimani induced the Omani ruler Said bin Sultan to conquer Zanzibar. The Arab Destruction of Portuguese Churches in Daman and Diu and how Muscat got its First Hindu Temple   Sultan bin Saif ordered a wholesale Jihad against the accursed Portuguese who “swept the coast of the sea of Oman.”  In a series of separate expeditions spread over many years, fleets of well-equipped warships sailed to Diu, Daman and Mumbai and devastated Portuguese possessions in all these places. The Arabs ravaged and burnt Portuguese Churches and everything that the Christians held sacred.   Sultan bin Saif also granted permission to Narottam to build a temple. Meet Narottam: The 17th Century Hindu Merchant who Refused to give his Daughter to a Christian Portuguese Commander   This is the story of the 17th Century Hindu Merchant named Narottam who lived in Muscat and had a business relationship with the Portuguese commandant named Pareira.   Pareira lusted after Narottam’s beautiful, unmarried daughter. He sent word to Narottam through a Pastor: I want to marry your daughter. Narottam's reply to the Pastor is a lesson to all the present-day Hindu parents of “interfaith marriage.”  “The thing which the commandant requires is unbecoming of him and me. The visit in a way, was a celebration of a rather thrilling history.   THE EARLIEST KNOWN HINDU SETTLEMENT in Muscat is no later than the 15th century. Archaeological digs have revealed that there was thriving maritime trade between the ancient Sumerian and the Harappan civilisation.    In the 16th century, Portugal directly controlled the whole of northern Oman. Muscat became the headquarters of this Portuguese mercantile imperialism. De-Hinduizing the History Syllabus: The Secret Directive of Nurul Hasan's Deputy, H.S. Khan   Nurul Hassan was education minister in the Indira Gandhi regime. He claimed to be a Marxist, but pursued an anti-Hindu agenda like a Muslim Fundamentalist.   Through his control of the powerful NCERT and NIEPA, Nurul became the education Czar in India. He gave patronage to the Marxist JNU and the separatist Aligarh Muslim University.   His deputy H.S. Khan thought India became civilized only through the introduction of Islam. These are the people who rewrote and de-Hinduised our history textbooks.   This H.S. Khan was the head of the head of the NCERT's History and Sociology Department for 20 years!
