Eksar Viragals: A Forgotten Heritage Swallowed by Urbanisation Eksar, now a sururb in Borivali West is the site of a glorious heritage left behind by Bhoja Raja, Goa Kadambas and Shilahara kings. Today, the only remnants of Eksar’s heritage is the collection of six Viragals — hero stones -- inside the compound of the posh Club Aquaria building, owned by the Wadhwa Group. Even by the start of the 20th century, Eksar had a large mango orchard overlooking a fine pond. Ghar-Wapsi Celebrated in Contemporary Indian Literature The titan of Kannada literature, Dr. S.L. Bhyrappa has beautifully infused Parāvartana in several of his acclaimed novels, chiefly in Dharmashri, Tabbaliyu Neenaade Magane, Saartha and Aavarana. In Saartha, a Hindu woman forcibly impregnated by Turushka savages marries Nagabhatta and both of them rear the child in her womb as a Hindu. This clearly agrees with Devala in letter, spirit and action. Today, we find it hard to understand the magnitude of the loss sufferred by the Hindu society when India was partitioned in 1947. Ghar-Wapsi in the Vijayanagara and Maratha Empire and Gandhi’s Betrayal of Hindus In 1398, a mass Ghar-Wapsi ceremony was conducted in the city of Vijayanagara in which forcibly converted Hindu men and women were readmitted to the Hindu society. This unknown episode has largely been overlooked even by the authentic scholars of Vijayanagara history. The next great epoch of Shuddhi occurred with the timely arrival of Swami Dayananda Saraswati. His most illustrious disciple, Swami Shraddhananda’s mass Shuddi campaigns unnerved the Muslim clergy throughout northern India and they had him murdered. But to his eternal shame, Gandhi declared that he would work for the remission of the death sentence of Abdul Rashid, Shraddananda’s murderer.
