West Asia Crisis Hitting India’s Infrastructure Push While the West Asia conflict (especially around the Strait of Hormuz) is known for disrupting oil supplies, it is now severely delaying India’s flagship road projects like Bharatmala and PMGSY due to a severe shortage of Bitumen.
The Bitumen Bottleneck:
What is it? Bitumen is a highly viscous, waterproof binding agent used to lay roads. It is extracted as a "vacuum residue" during the distillation of heavy crude oil. Where is the Gap? India consumes around 90 lakh tonnes annually but produces only ~54 lakh tonnes domestically. Over 99% of our imported shortfall (30-40% of total needs) comes directly from West Asia (Iraq, UAE, Iran). The Impact: Freight disruptions have caused prices to skyrocket from ₹40,000 to ₹80,000 per tonne, hitting smaller rural contractors the hardest.
Mitigation Efforts:
Relief: The Ministry of Road Transport (MoRTH) has invoked the Force Majeure clause, granting contractors penalty-free extensions and price-adjustment compensation. The Bio-Bitumen Solution: CSIR institutes have developed a highly innovative Bio-bitumen utilizing rice straw (parali) to extract bio-oil. If scaled, this indigenous technology will serve a dual purpose: drastically cutting our import bill and eliminating the winter stubble-burning pollution in North India. #GS3 #Economy #Infrastructure #Mains

The India Cooling Action Plan (ICAP), launched in 2019 by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, provides a 20-year roadmap to address the country's rising cooling requirements sustainably.
Key Highlights & Targets (by 2037-38):
Demand Reduction:
Aims to reduce overall cooling demand across various sectors by 20% to 25%. Energy Efficiency: Targets a 25% to 40% reduction in the energy required for cooling. Refrigerant Transition: Seeks to reduce refrigerant demand by 25% to 30%, accelerating the shift toward low-Global Warming Potential (GWP) alternatives to align with the Kigali Amendment. Skill Development: Focuses on training and certifying 100,000 servicing sector technicians under the Skill India Mission to ensure environmentally safe practices. Holistic Approach: Promotes passive cooling designs in architecture, expands efficient agricultural cold chains, and supports indigenous R&D in clean cooling technologies. #GS-3 #Environment_and_Ecology #Climate_Change #Mains

India's Cooling Paradox: Beating the Heat Sustainably With extreme heat driving India's power demand to a record 270.8 GW in May 2026, cooling is no longer a luxury—it's a survival necessity. The Paradox: Conventional ACs rely heavily on fossil-fuel grids and use hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), which are extremely potent greenhouse gases. The very appliances keeping us cool are actively accelerating global warming. The Solution: The India Cooling Action Plan (ICAP) aims to reduce cooling demand by up to 25% by 2038. Experts stress moving beyond basic appliance efficiency through a four-pillar approach: 1. Passive Cooling: Designing buildings and urban spaces with cool roofs, shading, and better ventilation to naturally lower interior temperatures before an AC is even turned on. 2. Appliance Efficiency: Enforcing stricter standards and making high-efficiency ACs and fans the affordable default for all households. 3. Refrigerant Transition: Phasing out harmful HFCs for low-Global Warming Potential (GWP) alternatives like R-290, ammonia, and CO2. 4. Grid Integration: Using battery storage and time-of-day pricing to shift heavy cooling power loads away from peak evening hours. Bottom Line: In a hotter India, the goal isn't less cooling, but smarter cooling. Integrating clean tech, climate-resilient architecture, and smart grid planning is the only sustainable way forward.

Before UPSC Changed its pattern to the to situational questions and application based questions we have been preparing a document of Prelims questions which was planned to be released in August. But, surprisingly UPSC was a few month ahead of us. So, I will drop those High Order Thinking Skills Questions here along with daily current event analysis to help your preparation. Explanation of the answer will be released next day. Here is the first question.

Answer of Yesterday's Question Both statements are correct. Supply-side shocks like delayed monsoon/El Niño raise food inflation. RBI avoids rate cuts, may maintain/increase rates to control inflation expectations. Persistent food & fuel inflation spills into core inflation via wages, input and transport costs, making inflation broad-based and sticky. This necessitates monetary tightening. Hence, Statement-II explains Statement-I. Correct option: (a).

Consider the following statements: Statement-I: Despite supply-side shocks caused by delayed monsoons and El Niño, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) is likely to maintain or increase its benchmark interest rates rather than cutting them. Statement-II: An extended period of food and fuel inflation often spills over into the broader economy, causing a rise in core inflation that necessitates monetary tightening. Which one of the following is correct in respect of the above statements? (a) Both Statement-I and Statement-II are correct and Statement-II is the correct explanation for Statement-I. (b) Both Statement-I and Statement-II are correct but Statement-II is not the correct explanation for Statement-I. (c) Statement-I is correct but Statement-II is incorrect. (d) Statement-I is incorrect but Statement-II is correct.

Retail Inflation at 16-Month High (3.9%) India’s May 2026 CPI surged near RBI's 4% target, driven by food supply shocks and geopolitical tensions.
Key Highlights for GS-3:
Food Spike: Food inflation hit 4.8%. Tomatoes soared 48.4%; rice entered positive territory due to delayed monsoons and El Niño. Broadening Pressures: Core inflation rose to 3.73%, showing price rises are no longer isolated to food. Fuel & Logistics: Fuel inflation jumped to 6% as West Asia war costs transmitted to domestic transport (+1.75%). Impact: RBI holds repo rate at 5.25%. Expect persistent pressure in June, with potential rate hikes by late 2026.
