India’s GDP contracts 7.5% in second quarter In news:- As per estimates released by the National Statistical Office, India’s GDP contracted 7.5% in the second quarter of 2020-21. In the first quarter, India had recorded 23.9% decline.  Key takeaways:- India has now entered a technical recession with two successive quarters of negative growth. Agriculture, which was the only sector to record growth between April and June this year, grew at the same pace of 3.4% in the second quarter. Manufacturing gross value-added (GVA) showed a sharp recovery to record 0.6% growth between July and September after collapsing 39.3% in the first quarter. Electricity, gas, water supply and other utility services also recorded 4.4% growth in the second quarter, recovering from a 7% contraction in Q1. But it remained a weak quarter for several sectors, including mining, services such as retail trade and hotels, construction and financial services. While the 7.5% contraction in GDP came as a positive surprise, there are concerns about a decline in government spending and the worsening fate of two key sectors compared to the first quarter. 🔅The Maritime Safety Committee (MSC) of the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) has recognised the Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System (IRNSS) as a component of the World Wide Radio Navigation System (WWRNS) during its 102nd session held virtually. ▪ The IMO is the United Nations specialised agency responsible for the safety and security of shipping and the prevention of marine and atmospheric pollution by ships. 🔅Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System ▪ IRNSS is an independent regional navigation satellite system developed by the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO). ▪ The main objective is to provide reliable position, navigation and timing services over India and its neighbourhood. ▪ The IRNSS constellation was named as “NavIC” (Navigation with Indian Constellation) by the Prime Minister. ▪ NavIC provides two types of services: ◦ Standard Positioning Service (SPS) is meant for the general public. ◦ Restricted Service (RS) is an encrypted service meant for authorised users and agencies. ▪ Unlike the widely used GPS which includes 24 satellites, NavIC has 8 satellites and their range is within India and its adjoining regions extending up to 1,500 km from the country's border. ▪ Technically satellite systems with more satellites provide more accurate positioning information. However, compared to GPS which has a position accuracy of 20-30 metres, the NavIC is able to pinpoint location to an estimated accuracy of under 20 metres. join🔜 @dailynewscom

New Village in Bhutan claimed by China Part of: GS Prelims and GS-II – International Relations In news Recently, Chinese media claimed that a new border village built by China near Bhutan was on Chinese territory. Key takeaways The released images of the village show its location on territory disputed by Bhutan and China. The village of Pangda has been newly built and authorities in Yadong county (an administrative region) of Southwest China’s Tibet Autonomous Region have confirmed that 27 households with 124 people voluntarily moved from Shangdui village to Pangda village in September 2020. It is for the first time since 2017 that a Chinese residential area has been noticed near the Doklam region, which is strategically important for India. Bhutan has officially denied the presence of any Chinese village in its territory. According to China’s maps, the village is within China’s territory. China also blames India for the unsettled China-Bhutan border and stalled negotiations by creating the illusion that China is encroaching on Bhutanese territory. 🍁🍁🍁🍁🍁🍁🍁🍁🍁🍁 Join >> @dailynewscom

Western Disturbances and winters in North For the past few days, Chandigarh and its neighbouring states have been experiencing unusually cold days although the night temperatures are normal. What are western disturbances? In northern India, winter rains and clouds are generally caused by moisture-bearing wind systems called western disturbances. They originate and gather moisture over the Mediterranean region and flow eastwards towards the Indian subcontinent. When some of these winds run into mountains of the northwest Himalaya, they are forced upward. At higher altitudes, the temperatures drop and water vapour gets condensed. This leads to cloud formation and eventually rain and snow. Other factors for severe winters in North In north India, the huge temperature difference between summers and winters is due to its continentality (distance from seas and oceans). Air from oceans moderates the temperature as it moves onshore, but this effect is missing in continental interiors. As a result, north India has greater seasonal differences as compared to peninsular India. Temperature also reduces rapidly with altitude, and thus, the Himalayan region is colder still. 🍁🍁🍁🍁🍁🍁🍁🍁🍁🍁 Join >> @dailynewscom

China sells Negative-Yield Bonds Part of: GS Prelims and GS-II – International Relations & GS-III – Economy In news Recently, China sold negative-yield debt for the first time, and this saw a high demand from investors across Europe. As yields in Europe are even lower, there was a huge demand for the 4-billion-euro bonds issued by China. Important value additions  Negative-yield bonds are debt instruments that offer to pay the investor a maturity amount lower than the purchase price of the bond. These are generally issued by central banks or governments, and investors pay interest to the borrower to keep their money with them. Negative-yield bonds attract investments during times of stress and uncertainty as investors look to protect their capital from significant erosion. At a time when the world is battling the Covid-19 pandemic and interest rates in developed markets across Europe are much lower, investors are looking for relatively better-yielding debt instruments to safeguard their interests. 🍁🍁🍁🍁🍁🍁🍁🍁🍁🍁 Join >> @dailynewscom

China’s Chang’e-5 lunar mission Part of: GS Prelims and GS-III – Space In news China’s Chang’e-5 lunar mission recently became the first probe in over four decades to attempt to bring back samples of lunar rock from unexplored portion of the Moon. The spacecraft is set to return to Earth around December 15, 2020. Key takeaways Chang’e-5 probe is the Chinese National Space Administration’s (CNSA) lunar sample return mission. Goal: To land in the Mons Rumker region of the moon, where it will operate for one lunar day, which is two weeks long and return a 2 kg sample of the lunar rock possibly by digging about 2 metres deep into the surface of the Moon. The mission comprises a lunar orbiter, a lander and an ascent probe that will lift the lunar samples back into orbit and return them back to Earth. The probe is named after the Chinese Moon goddess who is traditionally accompanied by a white or jade rabbit. Do you know? Early in 2019, China’s Chang’e-4 probe successfully transmitted images from the far side of the Moon, also referred to as the dark side. This was the first probe to land in this portion of the Moon. 🍁🍁🍁🍁🍁🍁🍁🍁🍁🍁 Join >> @dailynewscom

Desalination Plants and their Feasibility Maharashtra state govt. has announced the setting up of a desalination plant in Mumbai, becoming the fourth state in the country to experiment with the idea. What are Desalination Plants? A desalination plant turns salt water into water that is fit to drink. The most commonly used techniques used for the process is reverse osmosis where external pressure is applied to push solvents from an area of high-solute concentration to an area of low-solute concentration through a membrane. The microscopic pores in the membranes allow water molecules through but leave salt and most other impurities behind, releasing clean water from the other side. These plants are mostly set up in areas that have access to seawater. How widely is this technology used in India? Desalination has largely been limited to affluent countries in the Middle East and has recently started making inroads in parts of the United States and Australia. In India, Tamil Nadu has been the pioneer in using this technology, setting up two desalination plants near Chennai in 2010 and then 2013, while there are two more to come. Need for such plant According to the projections, the population of Mumbai is anticipated to touch 1.72 crores by 2041 and accordingly, the projected water demand would be 6424 MLD by then. Currently, BMC supplies 3850 MLD as against the requirement of 4200 MLD each day. Is it ecologically safe? The high cost of setting up and running a desalination plant is one reason why the Maharashtra government has over the last decade been hesitant in building such a plant. Desalination is an expensive way of generating drinking water as it requires a high amount of energy. The other problem is the disposal of the byproduct highly concentrated brine (saltwater) of the desalination process. While in most places brine is pumped back into the sea, there have been rising complaints that it ends up severely damaging the local ecology around the plant. 🍁🍁🍁🍁🍁🍁🍁🍁🍁🍁 Join >> @dailynewscom

What are Miyawaki Forests? Japan-inspired Miyawaki forests are emerging as a popular solution to restoring degraded habitats in the country. Miyawaki Forests Doctor Akira Miyawaki, botanist and professor, is the inventor of the technique since 1980. He is a recipient of the 2006 Blue Planet Prize, which is the equivalent of a Nobel Prize in ecology. The approach is supposed to ensure that plant growth is 10 times faster and the resulting plantation is 30 times denser than usual. It involves planting dozens of native species in the same area and becomes maintenance-free after the first three years. The technique The method takes its inspiration directly from processes and diversity in nature: 15 to 30 different species of trees and shrubs are planted together. This plant community works very well together and is perfectly adapted to local weather conditions. The habitat thus created will get more complex over time and attract much biodiversity. Vegetation becomes much denser than conventional plantations, and it has the structure of a mature natural forest. It is a multi-storey structure, where different levels of vegetation appear. The forest thus structured delivers many benefits in the form of ecosystem services. It would take about 200 years to let a forest recover on its own. With the Miyawaki method, a similar result is achieved in 20 years. 🍁🍁🍁🍁🍁🍁🍁🍁🍁🍁 Join >> @dailynewscom
