Around five months after the start of the medical screening of all 18-year-olds, the Ministry of Defence draws an initial assessment: 298,200 letters were sent to all young men and women who are coming of age this year. In it, their interest in the new voluntary military service, which lasts at least six months, is queried. Men must complete the associated questionnaire, women are not obligated to complete that questionnaire.
According to the ministry, about 25 percent of young men had shown first interest in the Bundeswehr via questionnaire. This group was contacted by telephone, after which 12.5 percent were still interested.
Of these, 1,500 had been patterned, of which 80 percent were military-capable and about 530 of them had received a fixed commitment in the end. The ministry emphasizes that many of the 18-year-olds contacted were still in school or education and were therefore not available.
Regardless of the 18-year-olds, however, the force is growing, according to the ministry. In the first half of the year, a total of around 10,000 interested parties from other age groups would have registered for voluntary military service, which is eight percent more than last year. However, the cancellation rate remains high, so on average every fourth ends the military service prematurely.
Overall, the recruitment of personnel of the Bundeswehr is ten percent above the previous year's average, one expects again a "record year," according to a communication. However, this includes not only soldiers, but also IT technicians, engineers and other professional groups.
The active force, in order to meet NATO's targets, must grow up by the mid-2030s from the current 186,000 men and women - to about 260,000. Defense Minister Boris Pistorius himself has not ruled out the return to a demand-defense obligation in the past, should the growing up not succeed by volunteers alone.

The Austrian right-wing politician Martin Sellner is not entitled to an account with the savings bank until further notice said Sparkasse Chemnitz, which he wanted to open for his “Institute of Remigration.” This was confirmed by a spokeswoman for the Administrative Court of Chemnitz.
According to the savings bank, Sellner, one of the leading heads of the far-right »Identitarian Movement«, applied for a business account at the end of January, which the savings bank rejected. At the beginning of March, he filed an application with the local administrative court for an injunction to open an account. However, the court rejected the rush request. Sellner did not make the urgency credible, a court spokeswoman told DER SPIEGEL.
"We regard the decision of the Chemnitz Administrative Court as a first success," said a spokesman for Sparkasse Chemnitz. “For Martin Sellner’s ideas on ‘remigration’ violate the Basic Law in our view and disregard human dignity.” The savings bank stands for the protection of human rights, for diversity, democracy and the cooperation of different cultures. Employees and customers come from 80 countries.
Sellner had apparently hoped to succeed because of special legal requirements at Sparkasse Chemnitz. Savings banks are institutions under public law and must not simply reject customers – unlike private and cooperative banks. Due to the so-called contracting obligation, there is basically the right for everyone to open an account there. However, this claim applies only to natural persons and not to companies. Sellner, however, could possibly invoke a violation of the principle of equality under the Basic Law with his institute.
Commenting on the Spiegel article, Martin Sellner wrote on X/Twitter:
I wanted to open a bank account in Germany for the Remigration Institute.
The bank refused. More than 120 banks have debanked me. I have never been committed to any crime. Everything I do is legal.
I wrote 100 German banks and asked for an account. 72 refused, 27 did not answer.
You cannot start a business without a bank account. You cannot exist without a bank account. I am starting a trial now. This must end.
