GOOD MORNING, FAMILY! Thirty years ago today, on a quiet Saturday in September, Carolyn and I slipped away from the world and got MARRIED. We chose CUMBERLAND ISLAND because we wanted something that felt completely our own, no cameras, no crowds, no noise. Just the two of us, a handful of the people we loved most, and the soft light of the Georgia coast. We arrived the day before, staying at the old GREYFIELD INN. That night the air smelled like salt and pine, and Carolyn kept laughing at how nervous I was trying not to look nervous. The next morning we walked down a sandy path to the tiny FIRST AFRICAN BAPTIST CHURCH, a simple white wooden chapel that looked like it had been waiting for us. There were only about forty guests. No elaborate decorations, just wildflowers someone had picked that morning and the sound of the wind moving through the trees outside. Carolyn wore a pearl-colored silk dress that moved like water when she walked. No long train, no heavy veil, just her, radiant and calm, holding a small bouquet. I still remember the exact moment she appeared at the door. Everything else in the room disappeared. I don’t think I heard a single word of the ceremony until she was standing right in front of me, smiling that quiet smile that always undid me. We said our VOWS simply. No long speeches. Just the two of us promising the rest of our lives in front of the people who mattered. When it was over we stepped outside into the golden afternoon light, and for a few minutes it felt like the whole island belonged only to us. Later we had a small dinner under the trees at Greyfield, laughter, a little dancing, the kind of easy JOY that doesn’t need an audience. I think about that day often. Not because it was perfect in the way magazines like to imagine, but because it was real. Quiet. Honest. Ours. So this morning, thirty years later, I’m still grateful for every second of it.
