How the Decembrists "Worked." From the memoirs of Dmitry Zavalishin, Chita, 1827: "Before heading to work, a bustle would rise among the guards in the casemates and the servants in our ladies’ homes. Books, newspapers, chess sets, breakfasts, samovars, tea, coffee, folding chairs, carpets—everything was carried to the worksite. At the same time, state laborers hauled stretchers, wheelbarrows, and shovels when the job was outdoors, near the ‘Devil’s Grave.’ Finally, an officer would arrive and say, ‘Gentlemen, time for work. Who’s going today?’ (Since many, by rotation, claimed to be ill and excused themselves.) If too few showed up, the officer would plead, ‘Come on, gentlemen, someone else step forward. The commandant might notice how few are here.’ Then someone would reluctantly reply, ‘Well, I suppose I’ll go too.’ (Most who went did so just to meet comrades from other casemates.) Then they’d set out—some picking up a shovel for amusement, others not. The unassigned shovels were carried or wheeled on the casemate’s own ox. The worksite turned into a club: some read newspapers, others played chess, here and there someone would jokingly fill a wheelbarrow, then laugh as they tipped the load—and the wheelbarrow itself—into a gully. The same fate met the stretchers with earth. Onlookers—mostly boys, sometimes even a sentry—would rush to fish the gear out of the ditch for a mere five kopecks. Soldiers would prop their rifles on gun rests—except for two or three—and lie down to sleep. The overseeing officer or guard would help themselves to leftovers from our breakfast or tea. Only when they spotted an approaching superior from afar would they jump up with the usual line: ‘Why aren’t you working, gentlemen?’ Sentinels would leap to their feet, grabbing their rifles. But once the superior passed by (and he, too, made a point of seeing nothing), everything settled back into its usual, normal-yet-absurd state." (D.
