A miracle in Leningrad: a Tu-124 landed on the Neva River On August 21, 1963, a Tu-124 took off from Tallinn to Moscow. Soon, pilots V. Mostovoy and V. Chechenev found the landing gear jammed. With fog over Tallinn, they headed to Leningrad to burn fuel and reduce fire risk. Circling the city, the left engine failed. ATC cleared them to approach the airport directly. Then the right engine failed. The 40-ton plane plunged toward St. Isaac’s Cathedral. Flying just 50 meters above the Bolshoy Okhtinsky Bridge and narrowly missing supports of the future Alexander Nevsky Bridge, the pilots executed a controlled water landing on the Neva. Peter III was proclaimed emperor in 1761, but ruled for only six months—overthrown and killed in a palace coup led by the future Empress Catherine II. Since Peter had never been officially crowned, he wasn’t entitled to burial in the imperial crypt of St. Peter and Paul Cathedral. Instead, he was laid to rest without ceremony in the Alexander Nevsky Lavra. Only in 1796, after Catherine’s death, did their son and the new emperor, Paul I, reinter his father in the cathedral—and personally perform a posthumous coronation rite for Peter III’s remains.
