"Portrait of Aleksandra Alekseevna Venetsianova", 1826 Artist: Alexei Grigoryevich Venetsianov Canvas, oil; 40.4×32.6 cm State Tretyakov Gallery, Moscow After his wife’s passing, the artist raised his two daughters—eldest Sasha and younger Felitsata—with deep tenderness and affection, finding joy in their growth and sorrow in their illnesses: My little ones comfort me with their progress and innocent hearts. Aleksandra showed early artistic talent and began studying drawing and painting under her father’s guidance. Later in life, she wrote detailed memoirs about him, lovingly portraying a man of rare talent and humility—noble, wise, and deeply cherished by all who knew him. #Art #RussianArt #Venetsianov #TretyakovGallery Canvas Whispers

"Window", 1886 Artist: Viktor Elpidiphorovich Borisov-Musatov Oil on canvas; 62.5×47 cm State Tretyakov Gallery, Moscow Borisov-Musatov paints the window of a one-story annex in Saratov—part of the modest compound known as Plats-Parad, where his family once lived. Behind the house lay a garden that, from early childhood, became a deep well of inspiration for the artist. Throughout his short life, he would return here to create open-air sketches for his larger compositions. With meticulous precision, the artist renders on canvas exactly what meets the eye: the lush green foliage dotted with white, red, and pink blooms, the slightly ajar blue shutters, the open white window frames, and the parted lace curtains revealing the interior through the window’s opening. "Terrace at Sainte-Adresse," 1867 Artist: Oscar-Claude Monet Canvas, oil; 98×130 cm The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York
"Terrace at Sainte-Adresse," 1867 Artist: Oscar-Claude Monet Canvas, oil; 98×130 cm The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York The painting’s composition is striking in its originality—defined by a high vantage point and the deliberate absence of a central focal point. Seated in a chair on the right foreground is the artist’s father, Adolphe. Slightly to the left, with her back to the viewer and sheltered under an umbrella, sits a woman—either Monet’s aunt, Madame Lecadre, or his sister, Sophie. In front of them stands Monet’s cousin, Jeane-Marguerite, accompanied by a young man. The vast expanse of the sea is dotted with sailboats of various sizes. Together with the strip of sky—divided between cloudy and clear sections—half the composition is taken up by the terrace itself, adorned with vibrant gladioli and nasturtiums. The play of colors is further accentuated by two flags, subtly placed off-center on either side of the terrace. Canvas Whispers

"The Sovereign's Prerogative", 1874 Artist: Vasily Dmitrievich Polenov Oil on canvas; 120×174 cm State Tretyakov Gallery, Moscow He steps into the courtyard after dinner, smirking, ready to inspect girls brought for his amusement. Hands on hips, he notes they’re not unattractive—perhaps he’ll grant them his "enlightenment." The nearest girl blushes, eyes down. The middle one stares with quiet disdain. The last, naive, doesn't understand. Their families wait behind the gate, blocked by soldiers. Upstairs, the castellan and chaplain exchange knowing glances—one won’t take all three; some will remain for them. —excerpt from a letter by Polenov to Professor Fyodor Chizhov, a friend of his father’s, describing the painting. #ArtHistory #Polenov #RussianArt Canvas Whispers
