Behind the house lay a garden that, from early childhood, became a deep well of inspiration for the artist. Throughout his short life, he would return here to create open-air sketches for his larger compositions. With meticulous precision, the artist renders on canvas exactly what meets the eye: the lush green foliage dotted with white, red, and pink blooms, the slightly ajar blue shutters, the open white window frames, and the parted lace curtains revealing the interior through the window’s opening. Seated in a chair on the right foreground is the artist’s father, Adolphe. Slightly to the left, with her back to the viewer and sheltered under an umbrella, sits a woman—either Monet’s aunt, Madame Lecadre, or his sister, Sophie. In front of them stands Monet’s cousin, Jeane-Marguerite, accompanied by a young man. The vast expanse of the sea is dotted with sailboats of various sizes. Together with the strip of sky—divided between cloudy and clear sections—half the composition is taken up by the terrace itself, adorned with vibrant gladioli and nasturtiums.
