Deciding between two icons for the EMA app: a head with a nut inside 🔩 or just me eating an apple 🍏 I think I am going to go ahead with the second one. Me eating an apple on a tool icon makes too much sense.

Made a few updates to my ASCII video shader and cleaned up the interface a bit 🍅 💔💔💔 HELP! I maxed out all my limits using Codex. If you wanted to try Codex by OpenAI, message me on TG @repponen with your email and I will use “Invite a Friend.” If you click the link you receive and make 1 prompt in Codex, we both get “Full Reset,” a button that resets the limits when we need it. 🙏

I love the concept of “mods,” where some dongle attachment can turn your device from doing one thing into doing another. Sony PSP-290 was a great example. Back in 2006, one year before the iPhone, Sony released a GPS attachment for PSP handheld consoles in Japan. Later, it came to Europe as Go!Explore. You plug the GPS receiver into the PSP, insert a UMD disc with the map data, and off you go. No internet, no real-time traffic, no Starbucks locations nearby.

America and infographics 🇺🇸🦅🌎 Just to be clear, the difference between 92°F and 94°F is about 1°C. That’s 33°C vs 34°C. So yes, this apocalyptic skyscraper is visualizing a one-degree Celsius difference.

🔴 Up to more complex ideas now. Last week I spent time building (read: vibecoding) a canvas-based app for working on stuff. I am hoping it can replace Freeform and Notion to some degree for me. The entire UI is custom-designed and built with Codex. Now that the basic features are in, I have a massive list of random things I want it to do next.

If you don’t know what to read this summer, Ben Denzer, an artist, designer, and publisher originally from Kansas, has designed a perfect set of books for you through Catalog Press. Some notable titles: 5 KETCHUPS 192 ONE DOLLAR BILLS 129 DIE All were made for the Whitney Shop to accompany the exhibition “Andy Warhol—From A to B and Back Again,” which ran from 2018 to 2019. On top of that: 200 FORTUNES, where every page is a fortune cookie message 20 SLICES OF AMERICAN CHEESE, where every page is a slice of cheese And many more. Enjoy your reading.

Only a lazy person didn’t post anything on Instagram after visiting clinamen when it opened in Paris last year. Now this massive installation by Céleste Boursier-Mougenot has been brought to New York. And yes, it is impressive. Inside three large circular pools of bright blue water, hundreds of small white porcelain bowls of different sizes float around. They keep drifting into each other, and every collision produces sound. Sometimes it is almost nothing. Sometimes it turns into a beautiful cacophony. Also reminds me of Tombola mode on my OP-1 synth. Everything is always in motion. Everything produces sound. It is very nice.

FFFFinder. I decided to make my own alternative to macOS Finder. And it worked. I always wished I could select a folder in Finder and just see all images and videos scattered across its subfolders in one place. Instead, I have to click through a tree of folders, going in and out, just to look at things. So I decided to try and build an alternative to Finder, without knowing if it would actually work. But it did. FFFFinder is a native macOS app that takes a folder with all its subfolders, scans the images and videos inside, and displays everything in one visual grid. It does not move files. It does not create a library. Everything stays exactly where it is on the Mac. The app simply removes the folder maze and lets me browse the media directly. 🔴 Watch on YouTube

Well, there has probably never been a better time to build an ecommerce app and not worry about payments or actually delivering anything. In Korea there is now a trend of so-called “dopamine sites” that let you shop online without spending money and, obviously, without getting anything delivered. Just for the rush of it. One of the best-known ones is called FoodNeverComes. You browse restaurants, add items to your cart, customize the order, check out, and even watch the courier on the map, but nothing is actually paid for or delivered. We live in strange times. But I guarantee this idea will keep growing. I am going to make one where I can shop for Ferraris and Porsches. [Video source]

Came across a new messaging app called Roost by Logan Mendelsohn. Instead of sending messages instantly, you have to choose a bird 🕊️ to deliver them, and then literally watch it travel across the globe in real time to your friends. So the message does not arrive right away. It takes time depending on the bird’s speed and the location you sent it to. Sometimes hours, days, or even weeks. That’s a nice one. I did install the app, but I still do not have an invite to actually use it. Joined the waitlist.

A recent take on interfaces from The New Yorker.
A recent take on interfaces from The New Yorker.

New York this weekend. I thought I would somehow attach my old DJI Osmo Pocket to my camera and record video while taking photos. It looked better in my head, but still worth a shot. Photos captured on Leica M11 with Leica Elmarit-M 28mm f/2.8. The city is crowded. The Knicks won the championship and the World Cup kicked off at the same time.

👀 Look! Books! Bráulio Amado “2018 Bráulio Amado BAD Studio” Published by Stolen Books, 2019 ISBN 978-989-54373-2-0 I wrote about one of Braulio’s projects not long ago, but he is an absolute Portuguese legend here in NYC. Happy to own one of his signed books in my collection. The book collects over 400 pages of work from the first full year of his Bad Studio, published by Stolen Books. Definitely a must-buy if you ever come across one.

Added a lot of features to my video pixel shader app. Besides things like custom text, trimming, and cell shapes, I can now add motion to each cell, which makes the whole shader feel much more dynamic.
