First time I vibe coded an app that produces results I can’t imagine in my head 🤯 Last night I realized I had an expiring banked reset in Codex that I needed to burn before it disappeared. I have a list of crazy things I want to do for occasions like that. I have a long-running research folder on slit-scan photography that I’ve been collecting since I started working on the Time Stretched series back in 2021. It has articles, lots of YouTube videos on the topic, and image and video examples. On a technical level, the basic principle is pretty simple if you understand how slit photography works with film cameras. Once you start emulating it digitally, you can use video as the source and things become much more interesting. For example, you can create time displacement, where different fragments of the image are sampled from video frames at different moments in time. You kind kind of do it in AE and Touch Designer if you know how to write expressions. I fed all my research to Claude (free account) and asked it to prepare a technical brief for Codex to build an app that lets me do simple things like static slit photos from a video source, as well as time displacement videos. The part I wanted to push much further was the slit itself. Instead of keeping it fixed (as ALL software does) or simply moving it across the image, I can animate the pixel-sampling path, rotate it, control its speed and apply sine waves to its movement. It samples pixels from the source as it moves, producing results that are completely unpredictable. The moment you combine this movement with time displacement, things get crazy.

FFFFinder is now available on the AppStore! Read about the app ffffinder.repponen.com As some of you probably know, I’ve been building various tools for myself that I wanted. Once I started sharing some of them, others became interested in using them too, so I decided to launch a few. FFFFinder is the first one on the list. I always wished I could select a folder in Finder and just see all the images and videos scattered across its subfolders in one place. Instead, I have to click through a tree of folders, going in and out, just to look at things. Adobe Bridge used to do that, but who wants to use it? FFFFinder supports common image, video, and RAW formats, and browsing through thousands of files is fast. You can search, filter and sort files, adjust the grid density, preview images and videos, and browse archives directly from connected external drives. ✌️

I am just going to tweak some tokens in the design system real quick, it’ll be fine. Also, my design file 5 minutes later.

Made several updates to the ✋FORMA app before it goes up for testing on TestFlight. FORMA is a simple macOS tool that allows you to stage any screen recording (of your desktop or phone) and position it nicely on any background, with simple configurations like corner radius, position, drop shadow, etc. Added a few new features and I’m pretty happy with this version: • GRAIN. Add film grain to the video for the vibes! • PRESETS! Save presets with all configurations, so I can quickly reuse them in the future. • RENDER. Updated render performance. What you see in the video is a 4K video being saved with a grain layer. It’s super fast! I’m so happy I no longer need to use After Effects to do this quickly.

Perfume bottle by Oddity Fragrance has this beautiful cap that is made from discarded plastic toys collected around Hong Kong, from places like shores, abandoned buildings and second-hand stores. The pieces are cast in transparent resin, turning collected waste into a beautiful colorful object, that is also a small archive of someone else’s childhood. Clearly this process produces unique results for each cap, which is also nice.

Not sure I’ve seen an image “carousel” like this one. A sequence of images just changes position from right to left on hover. Super simple, and yet somehow mesmerizing. Jeonsan System is a design studio run by Jeon San. The website was designed by Ayong Son, whose portfolio I’ve come across several times before.

Last week Johannes, co-founder of Berlin-based type foundry ABC Dinamo, gave a talk at Pentagram New York. In his presentation, he shared how the foundry’s main revenue streams have changed over the years depending on the types of projects they worked on, from actual font licensing to bespoke and custom typefaces and other initiatives. The reason the chart starts in 2022 is mainly because, until then, they never really kept track of the money. The studio was simply too small. And the photo is not a “snitch” photo. He did encourage people to take photos of this.

Saw a trailer for a new game that just came out called Future Knight. Love the art direction here a lot! It’s clearly built around the visual language of 80s LCD handheld games, which had a very specific technical limitation. Those old games used predetermined LCD pixels for characters, enemies and objects, which could only switch on and off, while the environment was a permanently printed color illustration behind the transparent LCD layer. Future Knight uses that static, pale backdrop aesthetic to create all of its environments. What used to be a physical limitation is now animated and moving, creating this really nice visual effect. The developers even came up with a name for it: “Liquid Crystal Pixel Art.” Lol.

Resurrected my Time Stretched Camera app I did last year. It’s now 10:01. Updated the rendering mechanism and moved it to Metal. It’s super fast now.

I would totally use it!Especially to control the font size! Via @gsimone

There’s this concentration of hand-painted mural ads in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, around Kent Ave and Wythe. They’ve been there for as long as I’ve lived in Brooklyn, and it’s usually fashion or luxury brands. Basically, people paint these by hand with brushes, based on a provided image. Now Figma, trying to be cool, has one massive mural painted by hand. I feel bad for the people trying to paint “Liquid Glass” and the Inter typeface. To me, all of this feels quite sad.

I had no idea! Since iOS 18 there’s a specific feature on iPhones that helps reduce motion sickness when looking at the screen in a moving car. 🤢 Motion sickness can appear when there’s a conflict in your brain between what is perceived by your eyes and your inner ear’s vestibular system. Your vestibular system tells your brain you’re moving, but staring at a screen that is static in front of you tells it something different. It can also happen in reverse with VR, when your eyes tell your brain you’re moving through space, while your inner ear tells it you’re sitting still. What Apple did is add animated dots along the edges of the screen that use the phone’s motion sensors to represent how the vehicle is moving. So when you’re in a moving car looking at your phone, the dots provide visual cues that correspond to the movement your body is feeling, helping reduce the sensory conflict that can cause motion sickness. I’ve heard on a podcast just this week in context that exact same feature is coming to Android now. [Video Source]
