Strokes of the last 60 minutes are shown. The real-time data comes directly from the computing servers of Blitzortung.org, which are fed by hundreds of stations on several continents. The delay is calculated from the time stamps of each strokes compared to the current time.
Legend:
• New lightning strikes have a red circle which gets smaller and disappears when it gets older than 60 seconds.
• The color of filled circles represent the age of strikes up to 60 minutes. New strikes are yellow. The older they get, the darker the color. Dark brown is equal to almost 60 minutes. Those strikes will vanish soon.
• On higher zoom levels the thunder front of current strikes is shown as white transparent growing circle (speed of sound). It gets more transparent while traveling and disappears after a while.

An interactive tool to explore lightning density globally
The map shows average lightning density values around the world using data reported by Vaisala’s lightning detection networks: GLD360 global lightning detection network and U.S. National Lightning Detection Network NLDN. They provide excellent coverage across all oceans and continents, and between 2016 and 2022, detected over 14 billion lightning events, which include both cloud-to-ground strokes and in-cloud pulses.
You can interact with the map by hovering over a specific area to see the average number of lightning events per km² per year. Zoom in to see your area of interest down to the state or county level. Expand the legend and select the density contour layer to see a simplified version of gridded lightning density data.
New 3D globe view
The updated map now uses the Mapbox Globe view as the default view, improving the projections of each country. This globe view wraps the lightning density data around a sphere and gives a three-dimensional feel to the map. To see the density data for the entire world at once, simply click the “2D” icon in the top right to see a Web Mercator projection of the map.
How to use
• Pan and hover over an area to see its lightning density. Zoom in to see data by state or province, and by county in the United States.
• Expand the legend to switch map layers, change colors, or hide values.

Map of lightning frequency showing Lake Maracaibo in northern Venezuela and Lake Kivu between Rwanda and Democratic Republic of Congo are the places with the most lightning.
This map draws on observations from multiple sensors—the ISS LIS, the TRMM LIS, and OTD. The TRMM LIS collected data between 1997 and 2015; OTD was operational between 1995 and 2000; and ISS LIS has been flying since 2017. Scientists from Los Alamos National Laboratory and the University of Alabama-Huntsville published an updated map in March 2021. Researchers from NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center released a similar map of lightning activity, based on three years of ISS LIS observations, in July 2020. | 85 |
