| 2 | Microsoft is cutting 4,800 jobs, or about 2.1% of its workforce, as it starts its new fiscal year with another major layoff round. The biggest cuts hit commercial sales and Xbox. In a memo, Amy Coleman said the move reflects changes in the tech market and the growing impact of AI on how work gets done. Microsoft said AI will not replace the employees affected.
Xbox faces the deepest impact
Xbox is laying off about 3,200 employees in a major restructuring, with 1,600 cuts starting first and more expected later this year. CEO Asha Sharma said the company must make hard choices because it loses 64 cents on every dollar invested. Microsoft is trying to avoid closing studios by spinning off Compulsion Games and Double Fine Productions, while new publishers will acquire Undead Labs and Ninja Theory.
Arkane Studios remains uncertain, with Microsoft negotiating to keep it open and continue Marvel’s Blade. Xbox also plans to cut middle management and place Minecraft and Candy Crush teams under senior leadership.
