گاهی بر سر چهارراه‌ها، جلو بعضی عمارت‌ها، در میدان‌ها یا روی پل‌ها می‌‌ایستاد. یک‌بار به یک شیرینی‌فروشی رفت تا اندکی بنشیند و استراحتی بکند. گاهی از سر کنجکاوی رهگذران را تماشا می‌کرد، اما اغلب نه متوجه آن‌ها می‌شد و نه اصلاً می‌دانست کجاست. در تشویش بود و اعصابش با تنشی رنج‌آور سخت عذابش می‌داد و در عین حال احساس می‌کرد که احتیاجی عجیب به تنهایی دارد. دلش می‌خواست تنها باشد تا خود را کاملاً به این تنش دردناک تسلیم کند و اصلاً در فکر یافتن کوچک‌ترین مفرّی نباشد. از تلاش برای حل مسائلی که مثل آوار بر روح و قلبش فرو ریخته بود بیزار بود. پیش خود بی‌آنکه آگاه باشد که چه می‌گوید آهسته تکرار کرد: «مگر این‌ها همه تقصیر من‌‌ست؟» ابله، داستایفسکی.

لبخند مهرآمیزی که در این لحظه بر چهره‌اش آمد روزکی بود و با حالت سیمایش سازگاری نداشت. مثل این بود که در این لبخند چیزی شکسته است و او هر چه تلاش می‌کند موفق نمی‌شود آن را بچسباند و به صورت طبیعی بازش گرداند. ابله، داستایفسکی.
