I have always heard locals claim knowledge of other tunnels in downtown Baton Rouge. This is the only tunnel I can verify, and the other tunnels remain in the status of urban legends.

This is a tunnel they say Huey Long used under the old Heidelberg Hotel in Baton Rouge. It connected the hotel to another hotel across the street, and was built so the hotels could share steam pipes and laundry facilities. Long used the tunnel to avoid the press and, allegedly, visit his mistress.

BTW, the long building on the riverfront in the photo above was where Kris Kristofferson was waiting for his train.

Old Baton Rouge makes sense as a city, but the action is all in the stifling, endless, formless sprawl that extends for dozens of miles east of the River.

I missed the boat but it wasn't my fault.
