| 2 | Umahi Orders Arrest of Contractor Over N14bn Benin-Onitsha Expressway Project
Minister of Works, David Umahi, on Friday ordered the arrest of the Managing Director of Hartland Nigeria Limited over the companyβs alleged failure to complete an 11-kilometre section of the Benin-Onitsha Expressway despite receiving about N14 billion from the Federal Government.
Umahi issued the directive during an on-the-spot inspection of the road, where he expressed dissatisfaction with its poor condition and the contractorβs failure to deliver the project as agreed.
The minister said the Federal Government had reached an agreement with Hartland to use the funds to complete the 11-kilometre stretch from Summit Junction to a bridge, including channelisation and hydraulic structures.
However, he said the contractor had completed only about 40 per cent of the agreed work.
"We paid them up to N14bn and when I paid them that money, we reached an agreement that we were going to finish 11 kilometres from the Summit Junction to this bridge with the money I am paying you, and then do channelisation and hydraulic structures.
"But today, they have just done about 40 per cent of the agreement. So, I recalled the MD to discuss with him for them to come back to site. I am going to look for him to arrest him," he said.
Umahi consequently directed the ministryβs controller to locate and arrest the companyβs managing director. He also ordered officials to obtain details of payments and certificates issued for all projects being handled by Hartland Nigeria Limited.
The minister warned that the government would take steps to recover funds already paid to the contractor if the company failed to meet its contractual obligations.

| 15 | Troops of Sector 2, Operation FANSAN YAMMA, conducting counter-terr0rism and anti-banditry operations in Kebbi State, have rescued a kidnapped woman and foiled a planned ransom exchange.
According to the Acting Spokesperson, Colonel Olaniyi Osoba, the troops acted on credible intelligence regarding a planned ransom payment for a woman abducted from her farm last month. They swiftly mobilised to intercept the transaction.
Osoba said the terr0rists attempted to engage the advancing troops but were quickly overwhelmed by their superior firepower. The encounter forced the cr!m!nals to retreat in disarray, leaving the hostage behind.
The troops subsequently secured the victim, who was found unharmed, and transported her to safety before reuniting her with her family in Danko-Wasagu Local Government Area of Kebbi State.
Following the successful rescue, the troops thoroughly searched the terr0ristsβ withdrawal route to ensure the area was secure before returning safely to base.

| 16 | The Nigerian Association of Medical and Dental Academics (NAMDA) says 14 of its 17 branches have voted in favour of a three-day warning strike scheduled to begin next Tuesday, following a directive from its National Executive Council.
In a statement issued in Uyo on Wednesday by its Acting Secretary-General, Prof. Aniekan Peter, the association said the strike would be total and comprehensive across medical schools nationwide.
Peter identified several unresolved issues, including the Federal Governmentβs failure, through the Ahmed Yahale Committee, to conclude negotiations on the conditions of service for medical lecturers; the failure to formally document the payment of lecturers under the CONMESS salary structure; and the non-payment of the Medical and Clinical Academic Training Allowance (MCATA).
Other outstanding demands include the payment of Earned Academic Allowance (EAA), Excess Workload Allowance and Professorial Allowance.
He described it as unfortunate that the government had allowed the issues to escalate despite the countryβs severe shortage of medical lecturers.
Peter questioned whether it was wrong for medical lecturers to remain in Nigeria and continue serving the country despite the harsh economic conditions.
He urged the Federal Government to return to the negotiating table and resolve the outstanding issues before the warning strike becomes inevitable.
Peter also criticised the governmentβs plan to mass-produce doctors to address the shortage caused by the migration of medical professionals, arguing that increasing the number of doctors without investing in the doctors and medical lecturers responsible for training them would not solve the problem.

Umahi made the disclosure during the flag-off ceremony for the dualisation of the Ibadan-Ijebu-Ode Road, according to a video shared on Monday by his Senior Special Assistant on Media, Francis Nwaze.
The minister said he would meet with independent engineers, the projectβs concessionaire and the state government to explore solutions to the worsening condition of the road.
"Tomorrow, we are off to Benin-Asaba. I want Nigerians to be assured that when we get there, weβll solve that problem," Umahi said. | 426 |

| 20 | 101-year-old great-grandmother arrested for sealing in hard drugs Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have arrested a 101-year-old great-grandmother for dealing in illicit drugs and also intercepted cocaine concealed in edible cassava flour popularly known as fufu.
The centenarian told operatives that she resorted to the illicit drug trade after her provisions shop was razed by fire, adding that one of her daughters, who resides in Lagos, arranges the supply of the substance to her every four days, which she in turn sold in bits. The Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of NDLEA, Brig Gen Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd), has, however, directed that the suspect be granted bail and placed on counselling because of her advanced age, while her daughter has been arrested. | 463 |
