The pie charts compare the age distributions of the populations of Yemen and Italy in 2000 and provide projections for 2050, dividing the populations into three age groups.
Overall, Yemen is expected to experience a substantial increase in the proportion of working-age people, while Italy is projected to undergo significant population ageing. In both countries, the percentage of children is forecast to decline, although the proportion of elderly people will rise considerably more sharply in Italy.
In Yemen, people aged 0–14 accounted for 50.1% of the population in 2000, making this the largest age group, narrowly ahead of those aged 15–59, at 46.3%. The remaining 3.6% were aged 60 or over. By 2050, however, the working-age population is predicted to become dominant, increasing to 57.3%. Conversely, the proportion of children is expected to fall to 37%, while the elderly population will rise modestly to 5.7%.
Italy presents a markedly different pattern. In 2000, the 15–59 age group constituted the clear majority, at 61.6%, followed by those aged 60 and above, at 24.1%. Children represented the smallest proportion, at 14.3%. By 2050, the share of working-age Italians is projected to decrease substantially to 46.2%, while the proportion of elderly people will climb dramatically to 42.3%. Meanwhile, the percentage of children is expected to decline to just 11.5%.

| 6 | The two pie charts compare the proportions of secondary school students at a school in the UK who studied six different subjects in 1995 and the present day.
Overall, there has been a notable shift in students’ subject preferences over the period shown. While History and Geography remained among the most popular subjects, Information Technology (IT) emerged as the leading choice. By contrast, the proportions of students studying Art, Drama and Religious Studies (RS) declined, with the latter two subjects no longer featuring in the current chart.
In 1995, History was the most popular subject, accounting for 26% of students, followed by Geography at 21%. Business and Art attracted 16% and 15% of students respectively, while Drama was chosen by 12%. RS was the least popular option, with just 9% of students studying it.
The current figures reveal a significant rise in the popularity of IT, which now accounts for 27% of students, making it the most widely studied subject. History remains highly popular, although its share has fallen slightly to 25%. Similarly, Geography has experienced a modest increase, from 21% to 23%. The proportion studying Business has remained unchanged at 16%, indicating a consistent level of interest in this subject.
In contrast, Art has seen a substantial decline, with its share almost halving from 15% to 8%. Drama and RS, which together accounted for 21% of students in 1995, are no longer represented in the current figures, as IT has become a prominent subject choice.

| 13 | The table compares the proportions of four main types of dwelling in Victoria, the Northern Territory and Tasmania in 2001 and 2006.
Overall, houses accounted for the largest proportion of dwellings in all three regions in both years, with Tasmania consistently recording the highest figures. By contrast, flats and apartments, semi-attached houses and other types of accommodation represented considerably smaller shares. Over the period, the proportion of houses declined slightly in Victoria and the Northern Territory, whereas it rose marginally in Tasmania.
In Victoria, houses made up 79% of all dwellings in 2001, before falling to 76% in 2006. The proportion of semi-attached houses increased slightly from 11% to 12%, while flats and apartments rose from 9% to 10%. Other types of dwelling remained the least common category, although their share doubled from 1% to 2%.
A similar downward trend in the proportion of houses was observed in the Northern Territory, where the figure decreased from 65% in 2001 to 63% five years later. Meanwhile, semi-attached houses increased from 13% to 15%, and the proportion of flats and apartments rose substantially from 8% to 15%. The share of other dwellings also edged up, from 14% to 15%, making this category almost as prevalent as flats and apartments in 2006.
In Tasmania, houses were considerably more dominant, accounting for 88% of dwellings in 2001 and rising slightly to 89% in 2006. Semi-attached houses also experienced a modest increase, from 3% to 4%. In contrast, the proportion of flats and apartments fell from 7% to 6%, while other types of accommodation declined from 2% to 1%.

| 18 | The pie chart shows the distribution of UK workers according to their average commuting times in 2009, while the bar chart compares the proportions of people using six different modes of transport to travel to work in London and the rest of the UK in the same year.
Overall, the majority of UK workers spent less than 30 minutes commuting, with journeys of 1–15 minutes being the most common. Regarding transport methods, cars were by far the most popular choice outside London, whereas public transport, particularly trains and the Underground, played a more significant role in the capital.
According to the pie chart, 42% of UK workers travelled for between 1 and 15 minutes, making this the largest category. A further 33% spent between 16 and 30 minutes commuting, meaning that approximately three-quarters of workers completed their journeys within half an hour. By contrast, 12% travelled for 31–45 minutes, while only 8% spent between 45 and 60 minutes on their commute. Journeys lasting over an hour were the least common, accounting for just 5% of workers.
Turning to the bar chart, approximately 72% of workers in the rest of the UK travelled by car, compared with around 35% in London. Walking was slightly more prevalent outside the capital, at about 11%, versus 9% in London. A similar pattern was evident for bus travel, which accounted for approximately 8% of commuters in the rest of the UK and 13% in London. Bicycle use was relatively uncommon in both areas, representing roughly 4% and 5% of commuters, respectively.
The most striking differences concerned rail-based transport. Around 20% of London workers travelled by train, compared with just 2% elsewhere in the UK. In addition, approximately 18% of London commuters used the Underground, a mode of transport that was virtually absent in the rest of the country. These figures highlight London's considerably greater reliance on public transport compared with other parts of the UK.
