TAKE OFF THE GRAVE CLOTHES 🚫🧥
“Now when He had said these things, He cried with a loud voice, ‘Lazarus, come forth!’ And he who had died came out bound hand and foot with graveclothes… Jesus said to them, ‘Loose him, and let him go.’” - John 11:43–44 (NKJV)
The story of Lazarus is one of the clearest pictures of the Christian life.👌🏽
When Jesus arrived at the tomb, Lazarus had been dead for four days (John 11:39). His condition was beyond human intervention.💔 There was no heartbeat to revive, no strength to recover, and no life left in him. Death had completely taken over.🥺
This is exactly how the Bible describes every person outside of Christ.🤔
Paul writes, “And you He made alive, who were DEAD in trespasses and sins” (Ephesians 2:1). Notice that Scripture does not say we were spiritually sick or weak, it says we were DEAD.💀 A dead man cannot make himself alive. He does not need rehabilitation❌ he needs resurrection✅
That is why salvation is entirely the work of God.💯
When Jesus stood before the tomb, He did not negotiate with Lazarus or ask him to make an effort. He simply spoke: “Lazarus, come forth!” (John 11:43). The power was not in Lazarus’ response but in Jesus’ voice.🗣️ The One who is “the resurrection and the life” (John 11:25) spoke, and death had no choice but to release its prisoner.⛓️💥
This is what happened the day you believed the Gospel.🔥🥺
The same voice that called Lazarus out of the grave called you out of spiritual death into eternal life. You were not gradually saved; you were immediately transferred from death to life (John 5:24). You became a NEW CREATION (2 Corinthians 5:17). Your old identity DIED with Christ, and you were RAISED together with Him (Romans 6:4; Colossians 3:1). 🕊️✝️
Yet there is a detail in the story that many believers overlook.👀🤔
Lazarus walked out of the tomb alive, but he was still wrapped in grave clothes.🧥
Think about that for a moment.🤔 He had life, yet he was still carrying what belonged to his old condition. The grave clothes did not mean he was still dead; they simply did not belong to the new life he had received.❌🙅🏽
Then Jesus said, “Loose him, and let him go”🫵🏽 (John 11:44).
This mirrors the Christian life.🪞
The moment you believed in Christ, you became a new creation. Your spirit was made alive. You were justified before God. Yet many of the habits, thought patterns, attitudes, and lifestyles from your old life still needed to be discarded. 🗑️
That is why Paul repeatedly tells believers—not unbelievers—to PUT OFF 🚫 the OLD MAN and PUT ON ✅ THE NEW (Ephesians 4:22–24; Colossians 3:8–10). He is not telling them to become new people, but to live according to the new life they have already received.
As God’s Word renews our minds (Romans 12:2), we PUT OFF anger, malice, lies, and every work of the flesh, and PUT ON compassion, truth, righteousness, and the character of Christ. God never tells us to merely remove the old; He always calls us to replace it with the new.✨
Do not mistake the grave clothes for your identity. They are not who you are, they are only what must be removed. Christ has already called you out of the tomb. Now, through the help of the Holy Spirit, keep putting off everything that belongs to the old life and putting on Christ, until His life is clearly seen in you.🔥
🙏🏽 PRAYER POINTS
- Father, thank You for giving me new life through Christ Jesus.
- Lord, reveal every “grave cloth” still clinging to my life and give me grace to put it off completely.
- I receive grace to daily renew my mind through Your Word until my life reflects Christ.
