⚠️ Trader mistake: Trading on confidence instead of a plan
After a series of successful trades, you start to feel like you “have a feel for the market.” Decisions are made faster, filters are weakened, and risk increases imperceptibly. Formally, the strategy is “the same,” but in reality, entries are based on intuition rather than rules.
🔎 Why this happens:
- The brain overestimates skills after successes
- Shift in criteria. “Almost a setup” begins to be considered a setup.
- Increased risk.
- Desire to consolidate success. Overtrading begins.
Signs that you are already in the risk zone:
- Entering “because it's going well,” without a clear level and “if/then” scenario.
- More trades than usual, timeframes are getting smaller.
- Not keeping a trading journal because “it's obvious anyway.”
- Risk is violated: instead of 1-2%, 5% appears “only today.”
🧠 How to fix the mistake, specific methods:
1) Rigid trade structure (template)
- Context: trend/range on the higher TF.
- Level: point of interest (price/zone) and why exactly it.
- Trigger: confirmation formation/pattern.
- Risk: stop size, % of deposit, lot calculation.
- Exit plan: TP1/TP2/stop, conditions for canceling the scenario.
If one point is empty, there is no trade.
2) Limits that will prevent mistakes. Daily trade limit. Daily loss/profit limit. Pauses after profit/loss: 30–60 minutes away from the terminal.
3) Risk is a constant. Basic risk of 1% per trade (or less) that does not change due to successful trades.
4) Trading journal. For each trade: reason for entry, discipline assessment (0/1), conclusion. Once a week — review. The goal is not to create a “pretty diary,” but rather metrics that can be trusted.
Professionalism in trading is not about feeling the market, but about feeling the limits of your system. Winning streaks come and go, but only consistency in following the rules produces results.

An average trader usually understands the importance of cutting losses early, but in practice many fall into the trap of “holding on just a bit longer.” They convince themselves the market will turn around, and instead of closing a bad trade, they wait, sometimes for days or even weeks, watching the loss grow.

The problem is that this behavior turns a manageable small loss into a destructive, account-draining drawdown. Instead of following a trading plan, the trader shifts into “hold mode,” abandoning logic and discipline.
➡️ Why this is dangerous:
1. Capital freeze – money locked in a losing trade cannot be used for other, better opportunities.
2. Emotional damage – holding a red position for days kills confidence and clouds judgment.
3. Risk of blow-up – the longer you wait, the higher the chance that a trend continues against you, wiping out a big portion of your account.
🟢 Example:
A trader buys EUR/USD at 1.0950, expecting a bounce after news. The pair drops steadily to 1.0850. Instead of cutting the loss at –30 pips as planned, he holds, “hoping” for recovery. Days later, the pair trades at 1.0750 - a tenfold bigger loss than the initial risk. While he was waiting, 4–5 clean setups on other pairs passed by.

1. Observe risk management
2. Accept small losses – reframe them as business costs, not failures.
3. Journal emotions – note when you feel the urge to “wait it out.” Awareness breaks the cycle.
4. Plan re-entry – if you still believe in your idea, close the loss and re-enter later at a better price with fresh structure.
