Community bootstraper A platform that creates a community website, forum, blog, online chat, handles sending a newsletter. All with no code. You deal with a community building. Other things are delegated to the platform.

Newsletter Syndicate Problem: There’s a new wave of independent email newsletter subscription publishers; however, it’s hard to keep track of these and there’s no central platform to read their writings Solution: As I see it, newsletters are simply the instantiation of syndicated publishers, columnists, or writers going directly to their audience rather than being at the whim and mercy of a larger news publisher. Before, a mark of a great writer was being syndicated in dozens of publications (having recurring columns that are published in multiple periodical publications). Now, and I argue moving forward, the mark of a great writer will be someone who has a dedicated and monetizable following (a la James Clear, Tim Ferris, Morning Brew, and more). Why not create a business that merges the prestige of syndicated columnists with the monetization of traditional independent email newsletter publishers. One example of a publication that is moving in this direction is The Pudding recently released a newsletter called “Winning the Internet.” Every hour, a Google Script runs that parses the links from the emails and saves them to a log dump. Data for the charts are computed, including a a 7-day rolling average of rate of newsletter appearances.

Financial manager Problem: Managing your personal finances is hard: making sure you’re not overpaying for streaming services, understanding ways that you can cut back on spending, making sure that you “pay yourself first”, and more. Solution: A service that serves as your personal financial butler with the sole purpose of eliminating financial waste from your life. The app/platform (which could either be a mobile wallet or analyze existing transactions in your current bank account on a recurring basis). This could even be as simple as upload your bank account statement to have all your purchases analyzed for a specific time period. For example, some things that this financial butler would do include: - Analyzing your subscription services and recommending when you should unsubscribe (e.g. if you have both Blue Apron and Hello Fresh, it would automatically recommend that you cancel one) - Automatically canceling subscriptions for you after your free trial is over (c’mon… we all do it!) - Examining your transactions to see if you are spending “within limits.” One of these limits could be modeled after The Richest Man in Babylon (10% savings, 10% debt, 10% investments, 10% charity, 60% living expenses including mortgage) and another one could be modeled after FYRE (read more about it in this New York Times article) - Giving users a “spending score” so they can gauge how much money they are saving relative to peers.

Receipts Management Problem: Often when going to a grocery store, we get a receipt and almost immediately throw it away. And if we do keep it, it's incredibly difficult to track a specific receipt/line item. Solution: It'd be great if there was a service that managed our receipts as soon as we made a purchase. For example, when I go to home depot, I would get the option to print a receipt, email my receipt, or upload the receipt to this new service. When I get home, I can then look up any item I've ever purchased or to find a receipt by date/store/city/etc. Monetization: Charge a monthly subscription or a one-time fee for the service. You can also use the data from the receipts to target ads (since you know where everyone is shopping and what they are buying).

Algorithmic Casting Director Problem: There about 135,600 actors in the US that are both employed and unemployed. Globally this number is even higher. Given this, it is extremely difficult for casting directors to find high-quality talent. Solution: An algorithmic casting director that can analyze the audio and video submissions from candidates to determine if they would be a good fit for the role. Right now, casting directors have to watch each individual video in order to determine whether or not to move someone forward in the process. Given that these directors are looking at hundreds or thousands of videos, this leads to implicit bias. Thus, the business would attempt to eliminate bias and increase diversity in casting by being more objective and (hopefully) more accurate in finding high-quality artists.

Resource: Y Combinator Startup Library This is a huge golden gem of the resources for founders and people who think to start something, to change, to improve, to succeed. They consolidated the information for 15 years and give it to you! Prepare a few days or weeks to read/watch the materials!

Anonymous recruiting platform Anonymous platform where recruiters write to candidates: if a position is interesting for an anonymous candidate, (s)he can respond and open the contacts and personal data. Or, can continue a conversation further anonymously. It solves a problem when candidates want to search jobs without letting some people know about that, e.g. current company.

For people who look for the problems to solve: let's share our own problems, thus we could have insights on what useful thing to build next. How: I'll create a private group. If you want to see other people problems, you should share yours(or your business) too. For this, write to me with a problem(s). I'll send you an invitation link. Then, post problem(s) there. Please, describe them well. And maybe include a possible solution. It would be great, if the problems are frequent and urgent. Examples: - I don't like to walk at clothes stores and pick the right ones. It takes a lot of time and most of the shops are just not good in my area. Possible solution: clothes delivery, thus I can order online a few models and sizes. Then, pick the matching ones. - As a business owner, it's hard for me to *do something* because of *the reasons*. - I love watching movies with my friend/gf/bf on distance, but it's difficult for us to synchronize. We have tried platforms that offer such functionality, but it misses *this* and *that*. We watch movies twice a week.

3D body measuring A tool that measures a human body sizes in all dimensions. It allows to set up the tool in a clothes store on the entrance, measure each person and then highlight the matching clothes for them.

The Y Combinator advice key points (full article): • Launch now • Build something people want • Do things that don't scale • Find the 90 / 10 solution • Find 10-100 customers who love your product • All startups are badly broken at some point • Write code - talk to users • "It’s not your money" • Growth is the result of a great product not the precursor • Don’t scale your team/product until you have built something people want • Valuation is not equal to success or even probability of success • Avoid long negotiated deals with big customers if you can • Avoid big company corporate development queries - they will only waste time • Avoid conferences unless they are the best way to get customers • Pre-product market fit - do things that don’t scale: remain small/nimble • Startups can only solve one problem well at any given time • Founder relationships matter more than you think • Sometimes you need to fire your customers (they might be killing you) • Ignore your competitors, you will more likely die of suicide than murder • Most companies don't die because they run out of money • Be nice! Or at least don’t be a jerk • Get sleep and exercise - take care of yourself #materials

Quick orders at restaurants Problem: I go to a restaurant and wait for a waiter to come to me, bring a menu and then I need some time to ponder what food/drinks I want. Sometimes it takes too long to make an order due to busyness of the waiters, for example. Solution: a mobile app where I make an order before going to a cafe/restaurant. Or, when I come to the place and make an order so I don't need to wait for someone. I suppose such an idea is implemented somewhere. But it's not popularized. A service in some restaurants could be much better.

Nearest toilet A mobile app where you can find the nearest toilet sorted by price, queue, cleanliness. Others can add a toilet they found.

Side project idea: Operating system This is a project that is technically challenging and will deepen your understanding of how computers and operating systems work. You might wish to start with the free book "Operating Systems: From 0 to 1". Any programming language will do the job. This is where non popular language features/concepts can be applicable.

- Web development skills are nice to have when you want to build your own product. - SEO is a good skill to understand how to promote anything. - Don't spend much/any money on ads. If your product has value, there will be users. Those are some key points from this article. The guy wanted to open a digital agency to make products for others, but hated when customers told him "I heard you, but do this instead". Then he changed mind and wanted to create his own product. It's better when you sell a product, not your time. Build once, sell twice. Especially if you are a software developer, as you understand a technical side of things. #materials

Cinema online with other people A web service where people watch a movie/series together. They can comment or even be connected via audio/video. There should be a feature to schedule a movie session. E.g. you schedule a session for the "Forrest Gump" tomorrow at 09:00, other people who are interested will join you.

Raising price up for 40% doesn't really affect your target customer, but it affects you a lot. If you save me money/time, why I shouldn't pay you? Insights on raising pricing up for 40% on a B2B tool And a related idea: Prices tracking A tool that notifies you when a business you picked changes their price or pricing model.

Groceries tracking An app that knows about your shopping list(the items I buy more often) and tracks price changes for them. Of course, it notifies you when there are any changes.

Twitter catalog Problem: it's difficult for new people on Twitter to find interesting people to follow. There is a search, but how do they know what keywords to use? Possible solution: a browser extension or an app that shows you interesting people based on your preferences: location, a domain(about what a person posts), an average tweets per day, total tweets number, an average number of likes/retweets/comments per tweet, etc.

Twitter analytics for beginners posters Gives you info about what hashtags/time you should make a post to get more readers, engagement, followers. Choose your niche category, an app gives all necessary info.
