A strong GS-1 preparation strategy looks like this: Static Concepts + Current Affairs + PYQs Build your source stack around: • NCERTs + limited standard books • History, Art & Culture • Physical & Indian Geography • Indian Society • Current affairs + contemporary examples • UPSC PYQs Then do the most important part: Connect them. A question on urbanisation may need Society + Geography + current examples. A question on floods may require physical geography + urban planning + recent events. A culture question may connect history with present-day conservation debates. The wording of UPSC questions keeps changing. The core themes often don’t. That is why PYQs are not something you solve only after finishing the syllabus. They should guide what you read, what you revise and how deeply you prepare a topic. So stop measuring preparation by the number of books completed. Measure it by how many useful connections you can make inside an answer. Read less randomly. Revise more intelligently. Analyse PYQs. Connect the dots. Because in GS-1, the edge is not knowing everything. The edge is knowing what to connect, where to connect it, and how to use it in the exam.
