| 2 | TARGET UPSC 2027? Then stop treating the newspaper as optional.
One of the biggest mistakes aspirants make is skipping daily current affairs because the newspaper feels too long or time-consuming.
But remember:
The newspaper is not just for Prelims.
It is one of your strongest tools for Mains.
Why?
Because Mains does not only test what you know.
It tests whether you can connect static concepts with what is happening around you.
A good newspaper habit gives you:
✅ Better examples for GS answers
✅ Stronger introductions and conclusions
✅ Data, reports and case studies
✅ Understanding of governance and policy issues
✅ Multiple dimensions for Essay and Ethics
✅ Better analytical depth in interview discussions
Can’t read The Hindu or The Indian Express every day?
That’s okay.
Watch a reliable newspaper analysis instead.
But do one thing seriously:
Be consistent.
Thirty minutes daily for months is far more powerful than reading current affairs randomly before the exam.
UPSC rewards candidates who can connect:
Static + Current Affairs + Analysis + Application
So for UPSC 2027, don’t just collect news.
Build the habit of understanding why the news matters.
Because the newspaper you read today can become the example that improves your Mains answer tomorrow.

| 6 | Your first UPSC Mains answer is not supposed to look like a topper’s answer.
That is exactly why you need to write it.
Your first 20 answers may look weak.
You may struggle with structure, content and time.
Your next 30 may become average.
You start understanding what the question is actually demanding.
And somewhere in the next 50 answers, things begin to click.
You write faster.
Your introductions become sharper.
Your points become more relevant.
Your conclusions stop sounding generic.
That improvement does not come from reading another book.
It comes from writing. Reviewing. Correcting. Rewriting.
One of the biggest mistakes aspirants make is waiting until they have “enough knowledge” to start answer writing.
You will never feel completely ready.
So don’t aim for a perfect answer on Day 1.
Aim to make Answer 100 significantly better than Answer 1.
Because you don’t become good first and then start writing.
You start writing — and that is how you become good.

| 7 | Most UPSC aspirants don’t lose marks because they know less. They lose marks because they write badly.
In Mains, your answer should make the examiner’s job easy.
📝 Use this simple answer-writing formula:
✅ INTRO — 15–20 words
Start with a definition, constitutional reference, recent data, report, judgment or a sharp context line.
No long background. Enter the question quickly.
✅ BODY — Think in dimensions
Use clear subheadings and point-wise arguments.
Add examples, facts, committee recommendations, case studies, Supreme Court judgments and current affairs wherever relevant.
✅ “Critically Examine” ≠ Only Criticise
Present the strengths.
Present the limitations.
Then give a balanced assessment.
✅ Add Governance Value
Whenever relevant, connect your answer with:
Constitutional provisions • Government schemes • Institutions • SDGs • Committees • Best practices
✅ CONCLUSION — 2–3 strong lines
Don’t repeat the body.
Give a balanced, practical and forward-looking way ahead.
🎯 Remember:
You are not writing an essay in every answer.
You are presenting a structured response under severe time pressure.
Structure > Length.
Relevance > Information Dump.
Presentation > Random Knowledge.
The examiner may spend only a short time on your answer.
So don’t make them search for your points. Make your points impossible to miss.

| 8 | You do not become good at answer writing by waiting to feel ready. You become good by writing.
After weeks of preparation, the Daily Answer Writing Programme begins now.
The purpose is simple: build the habit of writing every day.
Most aspirants delay answer writing not because it is impossible, but because starting feels uncomfortable. This programme is meant to break that inertia.
As James Clear explains in Atomic Habits:
1.01³⁶⁵ = 37.78
Small daily improvement compounds.
Five answers tomorrow may change nothing.
Five answers a day till 30 December can change your Mains preparation.
How it works
• Questions will be posted every morning.
• Model answers will be shared the next morning.
• Write, scan and upload all your answers in one PDF.
• Text discussion will remain open from 6 PM to 10 PM.
• Those who have written Mains before, please highlight good answers and share constructive feedback.
• You may DM me for guidance.
One rule
Be civil. Be kind.
Everyone here is at a different stage. A weak answer posted today is far more valuable than a perfect answer that was never written.
Constructive criticism is welcome. Disrespect is not.
Track your progress
Keep every answer you write. Compare your early answers with your later ones.
If you complete 90% of the programme by 1 January, that is a serious achievement. Celebrate it.
And on days when you feel tired, underprepared or unsure:
Write anyway.
Do not ask, “Am I ready?”
Ask:
“Can I write one answer today?”
That is how the habit begins.
Day 1 starts now.

| 12 | For those preparing for IFS Mains this year:
First of all, congratulations on clearing the IFS Prelims cutoff! 🌿
Clearing the Forest Services cutoff is itself a challenging task, and you have already crossed an important hurdle. Take a moment to appreciate that achievement.
At this stage, I broadly see two categories of aspirants preparing for IFS Mains:
1️⃣ Those who have been preparing exclusively for IFS Mains since the Prelims result.
2️⃣ Those who appeared for CSE Mains and will now shift their focus towards IFS Mains.
For both categories, my advice is the same: take the next 4–5 days as a rejuvenation phase.
As an aspirant myself, I understand that the mind and body cannot sustain peak preparation continuously for 2.5–3 months without a proper break. You have already gone through a long and demanding preparation cycle.
So, use these few days to rest, disconnect, and recharge. Don't feel guilty about taking a break.
After that, we will start afresh, with a clear strategy and complete focus on IFS Mains. 🌳
I will be using this group to guide you through the Mains preparation, discuss strategy, address your doubts, and help you navigate the preparation in a structured manner.
The journey to the final list starts now. Let's prepare for it seriously. 🇮🇳🌿 | 241 |
