A former Centennial High School student has filed a notice of claim seeking $20 million from the Peoria Unified School District, alleging the district failed to protect him from sexual abuse and ignored warning signs related to a sex scandal involving former teachers Angela Burlaka and Haley Beck. Burlaka surrendered her teaching certificate and was terminated, while Beck was fired for violating the district's sexual harassment policy. The claim names the two former teachers along with several current and former district leaders and alleges failures related to mandatory reporting requirements.
The case has drawn significant attention as Peoria Unified faces scrutiny over its handling of the allegations. In May, Peoria Police served the district with a search warrant seeking documents connected to the investigation. The district responded by asking a judge to review the scope of the warrant and grant additional time to produce the requested records.

| 3 | America First Legal has filed a lawsuit against Flagstaff Unified School District after the district allegedly failed to respond to a public records request concerning a January 2026 student walkout protesting U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. According to the complaint, district employees escorted approximately 800 students more than a mile from campus to Flagstaff City Hall without notifying parents or obtaining consent. After submitting a records request in February seeking documents related to the district’s planning and knowledge of the event, AFL says the district failed to produce any records or provide a response, despite Arizona’s public records laws requiring prompt access. AFL is asking the court to compel immediate disclosure of all responsive documents and to hold the district accountable for what it describes as a serious violation of transparency and parental rights.

| 4 | Peoria Unified School District’s governing board voted to remove Board President Heather Rooks after she pushed for an additional third-party investigation into the Centennial High School teacher predator scandal and possible mandatory reporting failures by administrators. The board majority replaced her with Jeff Tobey as president and kept Becky Proudfit as vice president/clerk, despite widespread parent concerns about student safety and accountability.
What makes this even more disturbing is that both Jeff Tobey and Becky Proudfit are Republican precinct committeemen. Heather helped Jeff get elected, and in return, both of them stabbed her in the back simply because she refused to back down from protecting children. It was painfully obvious this leadership change was preplanned to make Jeff president while keeping Becky in leadership. We are absolutely disgusted by their actions last night, and it is time for LD28, the Maricopa County Republican Committee, and the Arizona GOP to take action against these traitors. Becky was just nominated as 3rd Vice Chair in LD28. Parents should be furious that the majority of this board chose politics and self-preservation over protecting children from predators. Shame on them.

| 6 |  This AZ financial summary completely destroys the narrative that public schools are being “starved” of funding. According to the report, AZ school districts ended FY2025 with more than $7.07B in ending balances/carryforward while total revenues exceeded $13.6B. At the same time, enrollment continues declining, yet spending keeps increasing. The data also shows districts spent about $1.7B on admin while maintaining tens of billions in capital assets and large reserves.
This is why parents are frustrated when activists claim ESAs are “draining” public schools. Districts are sitting on enormous $$ reserves while demanding even more taxpayer $$. If SOS truly cared about “unused taxpayer $$,” they’d demand districts return billions in unused carryforward funds or explain why so much money sits idle while academic outcomes remain mediocre. But they never do. Instead, they target parents seeking alternatives outside the system.

Do you think Save Our Schools would support public schools having to give back the $7 billion they have in dead cash? They absolutely would not.
This has never been about “protecting kids.” It’s about protecting a system, protecting bureaucracy, and protecting union power. Parents are choosing ESAs because they want options, accountability, and schools that actually meet their children’s needs. If government schools were truly outperforming, families wouldn’t be leaving.

A 2024 Harvard EdCast interview featuring education researcher Charol Shakeshaft highlighted how educator sexual misconduct is far more common than many people want to admit, with studies estimating roughly 17% of students report being targeted by a school employee in some form. The discussion emphasized that abuse often continues because warning signs and “boundary crossings” are ignored by staff and administrators who either fail to recognize the danger, fear reporting it, or choose to protect the institution’s reputation instead of students.
The interview detailed common red flags such as teachers isolating students, communicating privately on social media, keeping doors closed, excessive one-on-one contact, inappropriate touching, and other grooming behaviors. Shakeshaft explained that many cases could be stopped early if educators and parents simply reported suspicious behavior instead of waiting for proof of outright abuse. She also warned that many schools still lack strong policies, oversight, documentation procedures, and accountability systems despite the prevalence of these incidents. Parents should understand that protecting students requires vigilance, transparency, mandatory reporting, strong boundaries, and administrators willing to prioritize student safety over protecting reputations.
