“ The hard thing to do and the right thing to do are both usually the same.“For a long time I felt that if I am making notes and watching lectures, I am doing my studies. Eventually they became my comfort zone. If I didn’t feel like doing anything, I would simply watch lectures and this gave a false sense of achievement that I had studied. But the truth is that I did it because it was easy. Obviously watching a lecture is less demanding than let’s say, revision or even solving mocks. And then when my performance in my mocks became stagnant, I knew I was stuck somewhere at the wrong thing. When you are stuck at some point, there arises some sort of restlessness that is very difficult to explain to others. It's something that only you will feel. So to get out of it, I started analysing where I went wrong. The answer I found was that I was stuck on the periphery and rather than doing core things, I was avoiding it. Chances are that you are doing the exact same thing. (You just said yes in your mind) To clear Prelims, you don't need to read a thousand books or watch a complete course on economy twice or thrice. The quickest and surest way to get to a score of 120+ is by doing the hard things. The hard things for Prelims are: 1. Giving as many mocks as you can 2. Thorough analysis of mocks and PYQs. Even if it takes 6 hours to do it, do it. Trust me every single minute spent analyzing mocks is a minute well spent. Even a thousand times better than watching a lecture. Any mock that is not analysed is equal to a mock not given. 3. Revision. Do not limit yourself to 2-3 revisions only. There are topics for which even 10 revisions are less. If you can do these three things with utmost sincerity and discipline over the next three months there's nothing else that stops you from clearing the Prelims hurdle. No I'm not lying. I am not giving you false hopes. I have no axe to grind. I have absolutely no vested interests. But when I see students failing because of these most obviously visible causes, I feel obliged to tell you. Most students that have failed Prelims have not done at least one of the above three things. Look you may have a different approach to studies and that's alright. But it never hurts to do something that has been tried and tested by so many toppers. There's a reason these three things come under conventional wisdom. Do not wait for April. Solve FLTs from now on. Keep revision ongoing. Do not sleep without analysing the mocks on the same day. ~Prashant Gupta
