🚨 BOJ SHOCK – CRYPTO MARKET RESETS AFTER A MASSIVE DELEVERAGING WAVE
Market Update – Wintermute (Dec 1, 2025)
The Bank of Japan unexpectedly signaled a possible rate hike for Dec 19, wiping out last week’s stability and triggering a global deleveraging event.
Crypto was hit hardest due to its high sensitivity to USD funding and thin liquidity after the holiday period.
But the most important takeaway:
🧹 The market structure is now… HEALTHIER.
A. What just happened?
🖤 The sell-off hit during the thinnest liquidity period of the year (Thanksgiving). 🖤 BTC dropped ~$4,000 mainly due to lack of depth - not systemic panic. 🖤 Gold surged → defensive capital rotated back into precious metals amid macro stress. 🖤 BTC’s “digital gold” narrative underperformed in a real risk-off environment.B. Under the surface, the market is improving:
🖤 Basis dropped to cycle lows → directional leverage flushed out. 🖤 Funding is neutral/negative across all majors for the first time since October. 🖤 Open interest collapsed from $230B → $135B → bad leverage completely wiped. 🖤 Spot volume picked up, showing the market is absorbing sell pressure better than expected.🖤 These are the necessary conditions for a structural re-accumulation phase once macro stabilizes. C. Sectors hit the hardest: - AI: –14.4% - DePIN: –13.6% - Gaming: –12.7% - L2: –12.5% - Smallcaps: –10.4% - Midcaps: –9.7% - L1s: –7.0% 🖤 The drawdown is macro-driven, not caused by sector-specific issues. D. Wintermute’s view: 🖤 The BOJ shock broke the early stability forming in the market. 🖤 But the market is now the least fragile it has been in weeks: Leverage reset; Clean funding; Stronger spot flows 🖤 Once macro calms down, crypto has the structural conditions for a sustained recovery. 💵 FUD TETHER THE LAST DAYS – WHAT'S HAPPENING?
S&P has just downgraded USDT's safety rating because it believes that Tether lacks transparency and is holding more risky assets than before. Now Arthur Hayes has added fuel to the fire by saying that a 30% drop in BTC/gold would "wipe out Tether's equity", causing a wave of FUD to explode.
Tether responded:
🖤 BTC/gold is just an additional profit, the $112 billion in US bonds is the main collateral.
🖤 They currently earn about $440 million/month and have paid out more than $10 billion in dividends this year.
Arthur Hayes stepped in, emphasizing an important point:
🖤 Tether is betting on a huge interest rate trade in the expectation that the Fed will cut interest rates soon, helping BTC/gold rally.
🖤 If the market goes against before the Fed acts, Tether will be under a lot of pressure.
Still, Tether has withstood Terra, FTX, and multiple billion dollar withdrawals, and is not to be underestimated.
But they are clearly taking more risks in expanding their asset portfolio, and that is why the $USDT FUD is back.
