detatched from agents and the internet entirely, and when you need entertainment, use those. you can't just freely configure the Switch 2, it's just.. a Switch. And that's a good thing! * Have fun! Don't just use your agent to fix things, whenever you think of something that might simply be interesting to do/have, ask about it! If you're really bullish on AI, I'd even suggest asking a standard chatbot like Gemini's or ChatGPT what they think, and then applying that after. With all of this in mind, Linux in 2026 is pretty much perfect. I don't think I'll ever really need to use Windows outside of a few niche containerized things. I'M SO HAPPY!!!! https://redd.it/1xgnrq8 @r_linux

Linux in 2026 is incredible. For years, I've been what one might call a HATER. I was so opposed to Linux I wouldn't touch that shit with a ten foot pole. But something snapped in me recently. I have a love hate relationship with Windows.. I think Win11 has been MASSIVELY improving as of late, and right now the most up to date builds have so much in common with Linux you'd think they're directly copying from popular distros (they probably are). It's great! But even still... stuff breaks, randomly. Want to fix it? TOO BAD, BUDDY, this shit is CLOSED SOURCE. The way your daily OS works is a mystery to everyone, and if you want to fix it, you better hope either Microsoft does that soon (they won't) or there happens to be some incredibly niche workaround for it (there probably isn't.) So with all of that said, what am I even supposed to do when I need some poweruser features that AREN'T there, or when there's some awful, unusable bug that drives my autistic ass INSANE!!! There's nothing, really. So I installed Linux. Or at least, I tried. I attempted to install Fedora, and my god, it was a nightmare. Nothing seemed to work out of the box, the video drivers would straight up crash my PC, and I was genuinely determined that Nvidia is the actual devil. I gave up, and went back to Windows. For my brief return to Windows, I started integrating some poweruser workflows, working up to eventually installing everything in package managers, using way more keyboard shortcuts, etc. I was having a lot of fun optimizing the shit out of my usage, but it didn't feel right. Why am I using an OS that works against me? Terrified, but still fed up, I tried again. I installed Kubuntu, because I figured that Most popular distro + Most popular DE is how I get the most reliable experience. And... it worked GREAT! Mostly. Some weird nvidia hangups still ocassionally show up, but overall it was a really stable experience. And then it hit me. I have been using Antigravity for agentic coding. I've recently super hardcore Googled my life (I know I know, I've ultimately made the call I value optimizing workflows and being happy over my privacy. If it ends up getting me in trouble, you can say 'I told you so") Anyways, I realized.. why can't I just use Antigravity to set up my PC for me. And OH. MY. GOD. Any time there's a configuration I need done FAST, I simply ask Gemini, and it's done just like that. No more hassle trying to figure out which way is the Best for my distro, no more struggling with weird install methods that aren't what I usually do, I just.. ask the robot. And it can do so much more! Configure apps to resemble my favorite things about Windows, make scripts to fix things and automate everything.. every task becomes done through specific and detailed human language, rather than trying to find niche GUI options on my PC. However, I set some ground rules, and if you use agentic workflows in your attempt to switch to Linux/enjoy Linux more, I would follow these too. * Keep a lot of backups of your entire install, and when you do something unsupervised, make sure to unplug that drive that contains those backups. Your agent can't break something it doesn't know exists. * Make sure to ask for a way to undo any major changes it makes in case you really dislike them. * Read its explanations! The end goal here is not just to be lazy and never have to do anything yourself (Although if you hate computers and just want to get by and play games and such, that works too).. but overall, try using AI as both an **assistive tool** and a **learning tool**. If you do that, you'll reach a positive feedback loop where you're making your linux setup as pitch FUCKING perfect as possible, all while learning new things about your PC and OS that you can memorize and apply on your own! * Take breaks. It can be addicting to try and make everything flawless, but you shouldn't rely on AI so much that optimization takes over your life. This sounds stupid, but if you're worried you're too busy perfecting everything always, have tech/Gaming products that are

NowCaption 1.2.0: free, offline live captions for Linux, now running my own speech model A little while ago I shared NowCaption here, and a lot of your feedback went straight into the app. 1.2.0 is out, with a short video of it running (the caption box is NowCaption's real, unedited output). **Video:** https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PL9c9ltI-yI **GitHub:** https://github.com/Techlm77/NowCaption It captions anything your PC plays, or your microphone, offline on the CPU: no internet, no GPU, no account. I built it with deaf and hard-of-hearing Linux users in mind, especially gamers. New in 1.2.0 is my own speech model, with about 23% fewer word errors than before. Since my first post there's also an AppImage, text colours, a transcript, docking and word effects. Thanks to everyone who suggested them. Benchmarks against Vosk, Whisper, Moonshine and others are on GitHub. I'll be in the comments, and ideas are very welcome. https://redd.it/1xgmutb @r_linux

Do you use browser as a flatpak? Are you aware of the weakened sandbox of the flatpak version? Title. I'm kinda on the edge to start using Firefox as a flatpak, cause I can get codecs and hardware acceleration for my GPU. I know about the weakened sandbox of the flatpak Firefox, but on the other hand Mozilla is actively developing it and it is a standard for example on RHEL nowdays. Am I thinking this too far? Is the weakened sandbox really a big deal? https://redd.it/1xgaooa @r_linux

New Linux user trying FSR 3.1 and GameScope in RDR2 (https://www.reddit.com/r/linuxgaming/?f=flairname%3A%22guide%22)Hi, I recently switched from Windows to Linux as my daily drive. I picked Fedora since it supports secure boot, and I can still boot into my Windows and play League of Legends (the only thing keeping me there). Other than that, it's been a smooth ride. This is not my first attempt but this time I did something different that I hadn't done those other times, I thought lets use my claude subscription to handle things for me and so I did and it's been insane how fast it fixes all the potential problems and installs my drivers and finds the settings I want quickly for me, although it might sound bad I've asked it to track every decision and command it runs in my machine in a private repo that I ask it to keep updated everytime so I have some kind of changelog of my machine but over all very smooth experience. I thought, "Well, why not let it install my game, Red Dead, and optimize it for me?" That's when I found out more about FSR and game scope; it searched for the recommended settings for my machine and gathered information from different community pages, and the result has been insane for me. I have a flashed RX 5700 -> RX 5700 XT. I could play Red Dead Redemption on it with decent quality at 1440p (sure it's upscaled) and hit 190! FPS at times, it's phenomenal. I've never seen my card hit these numbers, and to be honest, I'm happy with the quality of the game even though it's upscaled and I have fake frames. It's such a smooth experience, and my card has gotten a totally new life. I tried several other games and had the same experience everywhere. I thought I would make a video and record my gameplay and put it on YouTube so people can watch it and use the settings as well. If you have any questions, hit me up. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ivDFitbCoSY This is the reasoning on how this was possible (AI response): RDR2 does not support FSR 3.1. Out of the box it only has FSR 2 (added in a 2022 patch) and DLSS 2, and no frame generation at all. The secret sauce is a mod that fakes it. 1. OptiScaler: the main trick \- It's a small DLL dropped into the game folder (winmm.dll, with the Wine override winmm=n,b). \- When the game calls its built-in FSR 2, OptiScaler intercepts that and runs FSR 3.1.4 instead, which is a better upscaler. \- It then adds FSR 3.1 frame generation on top: it hooks the game's frame output and inserts a generated frame between every two real ones. That roughly doubles the number on the counter. \- Frame generation only works in DirectX 12 mode, not Vulkan, so the game runs in DX12. 2. Upscaling from a low internal resolution \- FSR 2 is set to Performance in the game, so it renders at only 1280x720, and FSR 3.1 rebuilds that to 2560x1440. That's the biggest real-fps gain. 3. Smart settings \- Ultra textures, which cost almost nothing on an 8 GB card. \- Shadows and lighting on Medium, the most expensive settings. \- Volumetrics and GI on High, motion blur off, VSync off. 4. The Linux side \- GE-Proton 11-11 with vkd3d-proton turns DX12 into Vulkan. \- RADV_QUEUE_DISABLE=compute avoids the RX 5700's GPU-hang bug. \- vulkan-1=b fixes OptiScaler crashing on Rockstar's old bundled Vulkan file. \- gamescope runs at native 1440p with no extra scaling. \- GameMode keeps the CPU at full speed. https://redd.it/1xgdcyf @r_linux

Fixed random full-system freezes on NVIDIA (open driver, Wayland) by enabling Resizable BAR on anold X99 board For a while my PC froze about twice a day. Not a crash I could recover from: the screen stopped, audio sometimes kept going, and even Ctrl+Alt+F3 did nothing. Only the reset button helped. Setup: CachyOS, kernel 7.3.0, niri (Wayland), RTX 4060, nvidia-open 615.78.08, Huananzhi X99-BD4 motherboard. After a reboot, `journalctl -b -1 -k` showed the same pattern every time: NVRM: dmaAllocMapping_GM107: can't alloc VA space for mapping. NVRM: nvAssertOkFailedNoLog: Assertion failed: Out of memory [NV_ERR_NO_MEMORY] NVRM: Xid (PCI:0000:03:00): 56, ... NVRM: krcWatchdog_IMPL: RC watchdog: GPU is probably locked! The process that hit it first changed. Once it was a Godot game I'm developing, twice it was Brave (its Media process died with SIGILL right before the lockup). So it wasn't one bad app. `nvidia-smi -q | grep -A3 BAR1` showed the problem: BAR1 was only 256 MiB. Without Resizable BAR, the driver maps GPU memory for the CPU through that small window, and when it fills up, the open driver can lock the whole GPU instead of just failing that one request. There's an open upstream issue with the exact same logs from people on Fedora, Bazzite, Arch and CachyOS, mostly with Chromium-based browsers or Discord as the trigger: [https://github.com/NVIDIA/open-gpu-kernel-modules/issues/1396](https://github.com/NVIDIA/open-gpu-kernel-modules/issues/1396) My BIOS had "Above 4G Decoding" but no Resizable BAR option. It turns out Huananzhi publishes an official BIOS for the X99-BD4 with ReBAR added, on the board's download page. I flashed it, enabled Above 4G Decoding and Re-Size BAR, and now: BAR1 Memory Usage Total : 8192 MiB No VA errors in the kernel log since, no freezes, and the whole system feels smoother, including games. If you have an NVIDIA card on an older board and see "can't alloc VA space" before a freeze, check your BAR1 size. A lot of X99 and other older boards have official or community BIOS updates that add ReBAR. Flash carefully and only the file for your exact board model. If you can't enable it, people in that issue report that turning off hardware acceleration in Chromium-based browsers makes it happen much less often. https://redd.it/1xg5kz0 @r_linux
