Nargis Cyclone 15th anniversary: A call to action for disaster preparedness and response ----------------------------------------------------- EHS Myanmar | 3.5.2023 Fifteen years ago, on May 2nd, 2008, the Nargis Cyclone struck Myanmar (formerly known as Burma), leaving a path of destruction and devastation in its wake. The cyclone was one of the deadliest natural disasters in the country's history, with an estimated 138,000 fatalities and 2.4 millions more affected. On this 15th anniversary of the Nargis Cyclone, it is important to remember and honor the lives lost and the communities that were impacted by this tragedy. While Myanmar has made progress in rebuilding and recovering from the disaster, many people are still coping with the long-term effects of the cyclone, including displacement, loss of livelihoods, and ongoing trauma. It is also important to recognize the lessons learned from the Nargis Cyclone, particularly in terms of disaster preparedness and response. The Myanmar government and international organizations have worked to improve disaster response plans and infrastructure in the years since the cyclone, but there is still much work to be done to ensure that communities are better prepared for future disasters. As we reflect on the 15th anniversary of the Nargis Cyclone, let us honor the memory of those who were lost and support the ongoing recovery efforts of those who were impacted. Let us also renew our commitment to disaster preparedness and resilience, so that we can be better equipped to respond to future disasters and protect the lives and livelihoods of those who are most vulnerable. World Day for Safety and Health at Work, April 28 ==================================================== In 2003, the International Labour Organization (ILO), began to observe World Day in order to stress the prevention of accidents and diseases at work, capitalizing on the ILO's traditional strengths of tripartism and social dialogue. This celebration is an integral part of the Global Strategy on Occupational Safety and Health of the ILO, as documented in the Conclusions of the International Labour Conference in June 2003. One of the main pillars of the Global Strategy is advocacy, the World Day for Safety and Health at Work is a significant tool to raise awareness of how to make work safe and healthy and of the need to raise the political profile of occupational safety and health. 28 April is also the International Commemoration Day for Dead and Injured Workers organized worldwide by the trade union movement since 1996. International Chernobyl Disaster Remembrance Day, April 26 ==================================================== The explosion at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in April 1986 spread a radioactive cloud over large parts of the Soviet Union, now the territories of Belarus, Ukraine and the Russian Federation. Nearly 8.4 million people in the three countries were exposed to radiation.The Soviet Government acknowledged the need for international assistance in 1990. That same year the General Assembly adopted resolution 45/190, calling for “international cooperation to address and mitigate the consequences at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant.” That was the start of the United Nations’ involvement in the Chernobyl recovery. An Inter-Agency Task Force was established to coordinate the Chernobyl cooperation. In 2004, the UN Secretary-General transferred the coordination responsibility from UN OCHA to UNDP as part of a shift in strategy based on the 2002 study “The Human Consequences of the Chernobyl Nuclear Accident: A Strategy for Recovery“. In the course of assuming coordination responsibilities, UNDP has identified three priority areas to pursue on Chernobyl: Information provision, including on promotion of healthy lifestyles; Community-based social and economic development; Policy advice, aimed at helping governments rationalize Chernobyl spending. International Pallas's Cat Day, April 23 ==================================================== April 23rd is International Pallas Cat Day. Also called Manul, Steppe Car or Rock Wildcat, Pallas Cats are well-furred cats from the cold Asian steppes. Most of them live in Central Asia, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan and Northern India to central China, Mongolia and Southern Russia.
