/collab conversation pieces: Empathie Saturday 27 June, 15:00 Tropez im Sommerbad Humboldthain Join us this Saturday for the first conversation piece with Alona Karavai & Vanessa Oberin. Taking Susan Sontag’s essay Regarding the Pain of Others (2003) as its point of departure, this first edition asks what empathy can mean in an age of constant image consumption and explores alternative ways of perceiving, relating, and caring. With temperatures expected to be high, we recommend arriving early to enjoy the pool and secure your spot. To guarantee admission to the event, we also encourage booking your ticket online in advance. We look forward to seeing you by the pool ⛱️ 🌞 The talk will be held in German. ▶︎ https://tropeztropez.de/alona-karavai-vanessa-oberin/

/open call Open Call DARC PhD/Research Workshop 2027 Interstices: Research (in) the gaps The research workshop organised by the Digital Aesthetics Research Center (Aarhus University) in collaboration with transmediale is calling for submissions 👾 The workshop invites proposals that occupy and move through the gaps that are social, as well as structural, ontological, and material, and that run through the fabric of matter, meaning and making itself. It invites speculations, practical interventions, and inferences that fill these gaps, and expand the diversity of possible communications and communities. The workshop is targeted toward PhD/early career researchers, and welcomes submissions from researchers from inside/outside the academy, including artists, designers, and curators. Deadline for submissions: Aug 28, 2026 (23:59 CEST) ▶︎ https://transmediale.de/en/news/open-call-for-darc-phd-research-workshop-2027

/tm27 transmediale RFC 40 groundstates & fragile currents As the days get warmer in Berlin, we have hot news to share: the titles and theme of the 40th anniversary edition! 🔥 Under the title groundstates, the festival’s programme will take place during the last week of January 2027 in silent green Kulturquartier. The exhibition fragile currents will be on show at the Akademie der Künste (Hanseatenweg) until March. Curated by Barbara Cueto, the festival revolves around the human scale of technology, resisting the expectation of a single technological future. groundstates presents four days of discursive and performative programme. The exhibition, curated by Antonina Stebur, treats infrastructural breakdown not as a moment of collapse but as a condition from which other forms of organisation can emerge. fragile currents presents a series of installations and a public programme developed with international partners. /network When Images Become Systems: On Visuality, Affect and Platform Power by Nora O’ Murchú and published by Aksioma is available to pre-order! 🪞 In this publication, former transmediale’s artistic director Nora O’ Murchú traces how artists make the conditions of the image visible through works by Simone C Niquille, Bassam Issa Al-Sabah, Jennifer Mehigan, and Ayoung Kim; exposing a regime of visibility in which the synthetic governs the real as we have become disconcertingly familiar with a new kind of image – affective, performative, computational – one that reorganises perception while destabilising meaning in real time. ▶︎ https://aksioma.org/when-images-become-systems Cover image: Bassam Issa Al-Sabah and Jennifer Mehigan, Infinite Image Hunger, 2023
