I often tell students in Islamic institutes: your studies are only as good as you make them. Put in the graft. If you want to be an average student, then just pass the exams. It's fine. But then don't expect to know much when you graduate. You'll only continue to quote this authority and that authority without the ability to understand their line of reasoning. Why? Because you never trained yourself to do that. But if that's something you actually want to do (eventually), you need to work harder than everyone else. Put in the graft. Read your own books. Study further. It's really as simple as that.

Dear: - Charity orgs sending flyers - Parents designing wedding card - Seminaries writing letters to parents/guardians - Community periodicals - etc. Keep verses, ahadith and Allah’s name out of your short shelf-life prints. I’m sure I speak for everyone when I say we are sick and tired of having to respectfully dispose your letters. Either move to e-letters, or simply avoid inserting symbols of our faith in your prints. Charities, you won’t get a dime if you continue like this. We can give charity elsewhere. Parents, stop showcasing your ignorance for all to see, on your children’s wedding cards of all places. Tackle ideas, not labels. When I began studying, I made it a point to not associate myself with any particular group. Rather, my goal was to simply approach research topics with a clean slate and to look at ideas for what they are... ideas. After being convinced about an idea, I felt it was of little consequence whether this group or that group agreed with the conclusion, because that was never the standard for which I judged the idea to be correct. I later figured that this was the approach of Sh. Abu Ghuddah (which is probably why I have a soft spot for him), and, in reality, the approach of anyone seeking to research anything in any academic or scholarly capacity (if that's your goal). And I often find myself refocusing people's questions to this very framework. Focus on ideas, not labels. It'll help a ton and save you a lot of trouble.
