Genetic Breakdown of the Aigyrzhal Culture
Aigyrzhal is an important archaeological site near Naryn in Kyrgyzstan, located in the Tian-Shan region. The wider Aigyrzhal complex preserves evidence of human occupation from the Mesolithic period through the Bronze Age, Iron Age and later Turkic period, making it an important site for understanding the long-term history of Central Asia. The Bronze Age Aigyrzhal population shows a strongly mixed genetic profile. A qpAdm model fits the population as approximately 59.5% Bustan_BA (BMAC-related), 23.8% Xiaohe_BA from the Tarim Basin, and 16.7% Afanasievo-related Steppe ancestry. The two analyzed male individuals also carried different Y-DNA lineages: one belonged to Q-Z5902, while the other carried J2-Y15611. This shows paternal diversity within the Aigyrzhal population. Overall, Aigyrzhal represents a genetic crossroads between southern Central Asia, the Tarim Basin and the Eurasian Steppe.

Genetic Breakdown of the Finnish People
The Finnish people, or Suomalaiset, are a Northern European ethnic group native to Finland. There are around 6–7 million people of Finnish ancestry worldwide, with the majority living in Finland. Significant Finnish communities also live in Sweden, Russia, Norway, the United States, Canada, and Australia. Finnish is the main language spoken by Finns. It belongs to the Uralic language family and is closely related to Estonian and Karelian, making it very different from most European languages such as German, English, and Swedish. Genetically, Finns have a distinctive Northern and Eastern European profile. Their Y-DNA is dominated by N1a1 (64.4%), followed by I1a (24.6%), R1b (4.8%), and R1a (4.3%). Y-DNA represents only the direct paternal line. Their autosomal DNA, which reflects ancestry from many different ancestors, is represented in the shown model by 52.9% Germanic, 35.9% Balto-Finnic, and 11.1% IA-Saami. These are statistical genetic components, not literal ethnic percentages. Overall, the Finnish population developed over thousands of years through population movements and genetic mixing across Northern Europe, the Baltic region, Scandinavia, and Eastern Europe, resulting in a distinctive genetic and cultural identity.

Mazunino Culture
The Mazunino culture was an archaeological culture of the Middle Kama region, mainly dating to the 3rd–5th centuries AD. It developed from earlier Pyanobor traditions and existed during the period of the Great Migration. The Mazunino people practiced agriculture, animal husbandry, hunting, and fishing. Their burial traditions included rectangular graves, often containing personal belongings, jewelry, and weapons. Arrowheads, knives, spears, axes, and swords show that warfare played an important role in their society. Their material culture also shows contacts with neighboring Azelino, Glyadenovo, and steppe populations. According to a qpAdm model, the Mazunino population can be modeled as 52.1% Indo-Iranian (Sintashta), 32.0% Uralic Bronze Age (Krasnoyarsk), 8.6% WSHG, and 7.2% BMAC ancestry.

Germany Magdalenian Culture
The Germany Magdalenian Culture was the German regional expression of the Magdalenian culture and existed approximately between 16,300 and 12,000 BC. During the last Ice Age, its people lived as highly mobile hunter-gatherers, following reindeer and wild horse herds across the open tundra landscapes of what is now Germany. Typical artifacts included flint blades, spear-throwers (atlatls), and harpoons made from bone or antler. Important archaeological sites include Gönnersdorf, Andernach, Petersfels, Hohler Fels, and Munzingen. Genetic analyses indicate that individuals of the German Magdalenian culture derived, on average, 80.9% of their ancestry from a Fournol-related source and 19.1% from an Epigravettian-related source. Among the four male individuals analyzed so far, four different Y-DNA haplogroups have been identified: I2a-Z2645, I2a1a-CTS2257, I-M170, and I2-S31. With the end of the last Ice Age, the Magdalenian culture disappeared from Germany and was succeeded by the Federmesser groups.

Early Medieval Sint-Truiden (Merovingian Culture)
The Early Medieval population of Sint-Truiden lived between the 7th and 10th centuries AD in what is now Limburg, Belgium. They belonged to the Merovingian (Frankish) culture, one of the major cultures of the Early Middle Ages in Western Europe. The settlement developed around the Abbey of Saint Trudo, founded in the 7th century, which quickly became an important religious and pilgrimage center. Because of its location on major Roman roads, Sint-Truiden grew into an important settlement within the Frankish Kingdom. | The cemetery investigated in the study was used for more than 1,000 years, from the 7th to the 18th century. More than 3,000 burials were discovered, and 372 ancient genomes were successfully analyzed. Most Early Medieval individuals belonged to the main local population, although the researchers identified five genetic outliers with ancestry closely related to ancient populations from Ireland and Scotland. | According to the study, the Early Medieval Sint-Truiden population was genetically composed of approximately 61.6% Continental Celtic (Gaulish), 32.6% Germanic, and 5.8% Helversum-related ancestry. The dominant Y-chromosome haplogroup was R1b, followed by I1–I2 and R1a, representing the most common paternal lineages among the male individuals. Overall, the study shows that the people of Early Medieval Sint-Truiden were a Merovingian Frankish community with a predominantly Continental Celtic genetic background and a significant Germanic contribution that remained relatively stable for centuries.

The Crimean Goths – The Last Gothic People
The Crimean Goths were a Germanic-speaking people who lived on the Crimean Peninsula from the 3rd to the 18th century. They were most likely descendants of the Ostrogoths and founded the Principality of Theodoro, with its capital at Doros (modern-day Mangup). Originally followers of Germanic paganism, they converted to Christianity between the 4th and 6th centuries and later became members of the Eastern Orthodox Church under Byzantine influence. Their language, Crimean Gothic, belonged to the Germanic language family. Today, only about 100 words, a few short phrases, and several inscriptions have survived. Over time, many Crimean Goths gradually adopted Greek and Crimean Tatar. Their society consisted mainly of farmers, craftsmen, merchants, and warriors, living in fortified towns and castles while relying on agriculture and trade. According to the currently analyzed DNA samples, the Crimean Goths had a mixed ancestry of approximately 56.2% Sarmatian (Iranian nomadic), 24.2% Germanic, and 19.6% Kartal (Scytho-Illyrian). Of the two male individuals examined so far, one carried the Y-DNA haplogroup R1a1-Z93-Y57-FTH7422, associated with Sarmatian ancestry, while the other belonged to G2a2-PF3146-FTB38820, a lineage that may be connected to the Greek population of Crimea.

Proto-Tocharians / Chemurchek Culture
The Chemurchek culture (c. 2750–1900 BC) was a Bronze Age culture that occupied western Mongolia, the Dzungarian Basin of Xinjiang, and eastern Kazakhstan. It is considered one of the strongest archaeological candidates for the Proto-Tocharians. The Proto-Tocharians likely spoke Proto-Tocharian, the ancestor of Tocharian A and B. Although spoken in Central Asia, it belonged to the Centum branch of the Indo-European language family and shared important linguistic features with Western European Indo-European languages, such as Celtic and Germanic. Chemurchek people buried their dead in large rectangular stone enclosures, usually in a supine position with flexed legs. A distinctive feature of the culture is its anthropomorphic stone stelae, erected east of the tombs, depicting stylized human faces with straight noses, large eyes, and often visible pectoral muscles. These monuments closely resemble Late Neolithic statue-menhirs from southern France. Chemurchek sites have yielded stone bowls, bone tools, grey pottery, and bronze weapons and tools, while dental evidence indicates a pastoral economy based on dairy consumption. Ancient DNA shows that the Chemurchek population was approximately 46.1% Afanasievo-related, 22.8% Tarim Basin mummy-related, 16.9% BMAC, and 14.3% Yenisei Early Bronze Age ancestry. Among six analyzed males, three carried Y-haplogroup R1b-M12149, while the others belonged to R1a, Q2, and C2a

Genetic Profile of the Udmurt Population
The Udmurts are a Finno-Ugric ethnic group living primarily in the Udmurt Republic of Russia. Closely related to the Komi people, they have historically inhabited the Volga–Ural region and have preserved a distinct linguistic and cultural identity despite centuries of Russian influence. From a paternal genetic perspective, the Udmurts are characterized by a high frequency of Y-chromosome haplogroup N, which is the dominant Y-DNA lineage among the population. Haplogroup N is widely associated with many Uralic-speaking peoples and reflects their deep ancestral roots in northern Eurasia. Autosomal DNA analyses indicate that the Udmurt genetic profile is a mixture of both Eastern European and Eurasian ancestral components. Their estimated ancestry consists of approximately 35.9% Sintashta, 23.3% Krasnoyarsk, 17.5% Baltic, 13.6% Western Siberian Hunter-Gatherer (WSHG), and 9.7% BMAC (Bactria–Margiana Archaeological Complex). This genetic composition reflects the historical interactions between Bronze Age steppe populations, ancient northeastern Eurasian groups, and neighboring Eastern European populations. The Udmurts are also well known for having one of the highest frequencies of natural red hair in the world, with red hair occurring significantly more often than in neighboring populations. This distinctive trait has become a notable characteristic of the Udmurt people and is celebrated annually during the Redhead Festival held in the Udmurt Republic. Overall, the Udmurts represent a characteristic genetic profile of the Volga–Ural region, combining a predominantly Uralic paternal lineage with a diverse autosomal ancestry shaped by both Steppe and Siberian genetic influences.

Ötzi the Iceman
Ötzi is the famous glacier mummy from the Ötztal Alps and lived around 5,300 years ago. He was discovered in the ice in 1991 and is considered one of the most important archaeological discoveries in Europe. Because his body was so well preserved, researchers were able to learn a great deal about the lives of people during the Neolithic Age. Ötzi was about 45 years old and wore clothing made from fur, leather, and grass. Archaeologists found weapons and tools with him, including a copper axe, arrows, and a flint dagger. He was probably an important person in his society. Studies also show that he was injured shortly before his death and most likely died from an arrow wound. His DNA is especially interesting. His autosomal DNA consisted of about 90% Anatolian Neolithic Farmer (ANF) ancestry and around 10% Western Hunter-Gatherer (WHG) ancestry. This means that most of his ancestors were early farmers from Anatolia who brought agriculture to Europe, while a smaller part of his ancestry came from European hunter-gatherers. His Y-DNA was also analyzed and belongs to haplogroup G2a2a1a-L166, a lineage commonly associated with Anatolian Neolithic farmers.

The Areni-1 Culture
The Areni-1 Cave, located in the modern Armenian province of Vayots Dzor, is one of the most significant archaeological sites of the Late Chalcolithic period (ca. 4300–3500 BCE). It has yielded the world’s oldest known winery, the oldest preserved leather shoe, a woven straw skirt, and exceptionally well-preserved human remains. Thanks to the cave’s constant temperature and low humidity, organic materials have survived for more than 5,000 years. Genetic analyses indicate that individuals associated with the Areni culture derived approximately 78.7% of their autosomal ancestry from the Shomu-Shulaveri population and 21.3% from the Caucasus Lower Volga (CLV) genetic component. All analyzed males belonged to the Y-chromosome haplogroup L1a1, while their maternal lineages included K1a8 and H2a1. They also carried genetic variants associated with light hair and blue eyes. The same variants have been identified in earlier Neolithic individuals from Polutepe and Mentesh Tepe.

The Early Slavs in Czechia
The early Slavs settled in the area of present-day Czechia during the 6th century AD. They founded villages, practiced agriculture, and raised animals such as cattle, pigs, and sheep. Their houses were built from wood and clay and were usually located near rivers. To protect themselves from enemies, they built fortified settlements known as hillforts. In the 9th century, the Great Moravian Empire became the first major state of the Western Slavs. During this period, Christianity spread throughout the region and had a strong influence on the people’s culture and daily life. The early Slavs laid the foundation for the later development of Bohemia and the modern Czech Republic. According to an Early Bronze Age model, the early Slavs in Czechia can be modeled as 48.4% Early_CWC and 51.6% Poland_GAC. According to an Iron Age model, their ancestry is estimated as 44.5% Baltic, 28.4% Balkanic, and 27.1% Nordic.

+3
Caucasus Hunter-Gatherers (CHG)
The Caucasus Hunter-Gatherers (CHG) lived in the Caucasus and northern Iran between roughly 13,000 and 6,000 BCE. They survived the last Ice Age and formed a distinct genetic lineage, living as hunter-gatherers based on hunting, fishing, and gathering. According to qpAdm models, their ancestry is estimated at about 72.6–72.8% Iranian Hunter-Gatherer (Iran HG) and 27.2–27.4% Anatolian Hunter-Gatherer (Anatolian HG). Studies suggest CHG were closely connected to early populations in the Zagros (Iran_N) and northern Mesopotamia. Genetically, they are often grouped with Iran_N due to their strong similarity, reflecting a broader east–west genetic gradient across this region caused by continuous interaction between neighboring groups. Archaeological evidence, such as similar tool traditions (Kmlo and Çayönü), supports contact between the South Caucasus and northern Mesopotamia as early as the 9th millennium BCE. Around 6200–6000 BCE, the Neolithic transition in the South Caucasus likely occurred through mixing between local CHG groups and incoming farmers from northern Mesopotamia, rather than a full population replacement.

The Ananyino Culture
The Ananyino Culture was an Iron Age culture of the Volga-Kama region, flourishing from around 900 BC to 200 BC. It is generally associated with early Finno-Ugric peoples, including the Proto-Permians and Volga Finns. Its people practiced agriculture, animal husbandry, hunting, and fishing, while also developing advanced bronze and iron metallurgy. The culture maintained extensive contacts with the Scythians and the Caucasian world, adopting new technologies and cultural influences while preserving its own Uralic identity. Archaeological finds include fortified settlements, large cemeteries, weapons, tools, and distinctive decorated pottery. Genetically, the Ananyino population can be modeled as approximately 55.5% Aryan/Iranian, 29.2% Proto-Uralic, and 15.3% Excess Hunter-Gatherer. This ancestry profile reflects the culture’s position between the Iranian-speaking steppe populations to the south and the Uralic forest peoples of northern Eurasia. As a result, the Ananyino Culture represents an important meeting point of Indo-Iranian and Uralic traditions during the Early Iron Age.
