| 2 |  যাদবপুর রেলওয়ে সাইডিং থেকে ইমারতি সামগ্রীর ব্যবসায়ীদের উৎখাত করা নিয়ে একাধিক বাম সংগঠন এবং কংগ্রেসের কর্মীরা স্থানীয়দের নিয়ে পথে নেমেছিলেন। ওই সাইডিং ৭৪ বছরের পুরোনো। সেখানে রেলের কাছ থেকে লিজ নিয়েই ব্যবসা চালাতেন ব্যবসায়ীরা। পরে আচমকা লিজ পুনর্নবীকরণ বন্ধ করে দেয় রেল।
সরকারিভাবে টাকা না নিয়ে শিয়ালদহ ডিভিশনের বাণিজ্যিক বিভাগের শীর্ষ কর্তাদের একাংশ এবং আর.পি.এফ কর্তাদের একাংশ ঘুরপথে (দুর্নীতি করে) লাখ লাখ টাকা নগদ নিয়ে নিজেদের পকেট ভরেছেন। রেলের ঘরে টাকা যায়নি।
ওই সাইডিংয়ে ৪২জন ব্যবসায়ীর ব্যবসার সঙ্গে প্রায় ৩ হাজার শ্রমিক যুক্ত।
ভক্তদের অনেকেই না জেনে একতরফা মন্তব্য করে সমাজ মাধ্যমে গাল পাড়ছেন।
সত্যের কোনও পক্ষ হয় না। সেটা নির্জলা সত্যিই। সবসময় সুন্দর নাও হতে পারে। কিন্ত, শেষ পর্যন্ত সেটা জানার জন্য অপেক্ষা করতে হয়।

যাদবপুর রেল স্টেশনে হকার উচ্ছেদ না করার প্রতিশ্রুতি ও ১৯৮৮ সালের হকার উচ্ছেদ মামলার রায়ের প্রেক্ষিতে সাময়িক ভাবে উচ্ছেদ বন্ধ রাখার আশ্বাসকে বুড়ো আঙুল দেখিয়ে উচ্ছেদের বিরুদ্ধে প্রতিবাদ জানাতে আসা হকার, রাজনৈতিক দলের কর্মী ও সাধারণ মানুষের উপর নির্বিচারে লাঠি চার্জ করলো রাজ্য পুলিস ও কেন্দ্রীয় বাহিনী। বুলডোজার দিয়ে ভাঙা শুরু হল, শুরু হল উচ্ছেদ।
কয়েক'শো পুলিশ কর্মী মিলে গোটা রবিবার,৭ জুন মধ্যরাতের পর রেলস্টেশন জুড়ে আন্দোলকারীদের ঘিরে রেখেছে কয়েক ঘন্টা ধরে৷ এমনকি তাদের কাছে রয়েছে AK47 রাইফেল। আনা হয়েছে টিয়ার গ্যাস। ভয়াবহ লাঠি চার্জে আহতের সংখ্যা প্রচুর।
সিপিআই(এম)-এর নেতা সুজন চক্রবর্তী, নাট্যকর্মী জয়রাজ ভট্টাচার্যসহ প্রচুর রাজনৈতিক কর্মীদের মাথা ফেটেছে, আঘাত লেগেছে সারা শরীরেই। মহিলারাও আহত। পুলিশ এতোটাই নির্বিকার যে, তাদের নূন্যতম চিকিৎসা অবধি করাতে দিচ্ছে না। আন্দোলন চত্ত্বর থেকে গ্রেপ্তার করা হয়েছে সিপিআই(এম) নেতা সৃজন ভট্টাচার্যকে।
আন্দোলনকারীদের সরিয়ে দেওয়ার পর অতি দ্রুত রেলস্টেশন সংলগ্ন বাড়ি, দোকানপাট বুলডোজার দিয়ে ভাঙতে শুরু করে পুলিশ। স্টেশন চত্ত্বরে লোহার বড় ব্যারিকেড সাজানো হয়েছে। বুলডোজার আনা হয়েছে অন্ততপক্ষে ৪টি।
অথচ, ২ জুন সন্ধেবেলা থেকে রেল আধিকারিক ও পুলিশের সাথে দফায় দফায় কথা বলেছিলেন বামপন্থী দলগুলির নেতারা। ১৯৮৮ সালের পুরনো মামলার রায় ও হাইকোর্টের স্টে-অর্ডার দেখিয়ে পরিস্কারভাবে গ্রীষ্মকালীন ছুটি অবধি সময় চাওয়া হয়েছিল। সোমবার, ৮ জুন হাইকোর্ট খুললেই আন্দোলনকারীদের তরফ থেকে কোর্টে যাওয়া,হবে বলেও জানানো হয়েছিল। সে-সময় রেল আধিকারিক ও পুলিশ দুই পক্ষই রাজি হয়েছিলেন। কিন্তু, রবিবার মধ্যরাতে পুনরায় কোনোরকম পূর্বাভাস ছাড়াই এই ভয়ানক উচ্ছেদ অভিযান চালানো হচ্ছে।
আপাতত কয়েকজন আহত আন্দোলনকারীদের কেপিসি হাসপাতালে ভর্তি করা হয়েছে।

আমরা জানতাম ফ্যাসিবাদী শক্তি এত সহজে হার মানবে না। তারা আবার ফিরে আসবেই। তাই আজ আবার হকার উচ্ছেদ করতে আসছে বাহিনী। এবার আরও আঁটোসাঁটো হয়ে। আগেরবারের তুলনায় আমাদেরও এবার আরও ঐক্যবদ্ধ হয়ে ওদের প্রতিরোধ করতে হবে। এ লড়াই আমার আপনার। ফ্যাসিবাদকে সম্পূর্ণ খতম না করা পর্যন্ত লড়াই চালিয়েই যেতে হয়। দেশের সাধারণ খেটে খাওয়া মানুষের স্বার্থে আজকে বিজেপি-আর.এস.এস-কে হারাতে আরও তীব্র, আরও ঐক্যবদ্ধ, আরও জঙ্গিভাবে বিভিন্ন ফ্রন্টে লড়াইটা চালিয়ে যেতে হবে।

| 15 | On 6 June 2026, it will be eight years since Advocate Surendra Gadling has been arrested in the Bhima Koregaon/ Elgar Parishad conspiracy case. Advocate Surendra Gadling, a Nagpur-based human rights lawyer known for defending Dalit, Adivasi and political prisoners, was arrested on 6 June 2018 in the Elgar Parishad–Bhima Koregaon case under the UAPA. He was among the first five people arrested in the case and has spent nearly eight years in prison as an undertrial without the trial commencing. He has been denied bail on multiple occasions.
In August 2020 when his mother died, Adv. Gadling sought temporary bail to attend the funeral rites but was denied permission by the special NIA court. He was unable to participate in the immediate last rites. In 2021, the Bombay High Court later granted him temporary bail to perform her first death-anniversary rituals, criticizing the lower court's lack of a humanitarian approach
It is difficult to imagine that a people’s lawyers and human rights defender is himself incarcerated for so long without any respite in sight.
Over a three decade long career, prior to his arrest, Advocate Surendra Gadling became a formidable force and a point person for cases of illegal killings, police excesses, fake cases, and atrocities against Dalits and Adivasis in the region. He soon became an expert in special laws like TADA, POTA, UAPA, the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. He worked to achieve justice for several victims of atrocities. His legal acumen helped establish the truth and obtain the acquittal of hundreds of tribal and other activists falsely incriminated and tried in thousands of cases under draconian anti-terror laws.
Ironically, Adv. Gadling was the advocate for all those who have been named as accused in the present case, who had been previously arrested under UAPA between 2007 and 2011 and subsequently faced trial. Sudhir Dhawale was arrested in 2011 by the Maharashtra police on charges of sedition and being a member of, and providing support to a Maoist organisation and remained an undertrial till he was acquitted of all charges in May 2014. Arun Ferreira was arrested in May 2007 and falsely implicated in 10 cases while VernonGonsalves was arrested in August 2007 and falsely implicated in 19 cases. Gadling and the dynamic team of lawyers whom he inspired and trained managed to free both. While Ferreira was acquitted in all 10 cases, Gonsalves too was acquitted in all Maharashtra cases except one.
At the time of Gadling’s arrest he was handling the High Court appeal against the conviction of Dr. G. N. Saibaba, a wheelchair-bound Delhi University English professor and five other co-accused jailed under UAPA and falsely accused of terror links and conspiring to wage war against India. In a vindication of Adv Gadling’s work in this case in both trial and appeal, the High Court ultimately acquitted all of them in March 2024. Due to his work for the Saibaba defence, Gadling received veiled and unveiled threats from the police, intimating that he was next in line for arrests. Unmindful of such intimidation, Adv Gadling steadfastly continued his work as a human rights defender. This resolute spirit remains unbent and unbroken as he enters his ninth year in prison.

The Campaign Against State Repression (CASR) held a public meeting at the Constitution Club of India, New Delhi, on 3rd June 2026, marking two years since the arrest of Adivasi youth activist and Moolwasi Bachao Manch (MBM) member Suneeta Pottam. Lawyers, academics, journalists and human rights activists addressed the growing assault on democratic rights and civil liberties under the state-corporate nexus.
Adv. Geet Dehariya, who hails from Chhattisgarh and is currently a practicing lawyer in Delhi, opened the conference by outlining Suneeta Pottam's journey as an activist. Born in Korcholi village, an area deeply affected by Salwa Judum violence, Suneeta was forced to leave school at the age of nine after it was converted into a security camp. Despite these conditions, she began documenting and exposing state atrocities in Bastar from the age of seventeen and was completing her Class 10 education when she was arrested.
Human rights lawyer Adv. Shalini Gaira recalled working with Suneeta and her sister Munni since 2016. She described their efforts in documenting extrajudicial killings, sexual violence, displacement and police brutality, assisting villagers in filing complaints and affidavits, and accompanying fact-finding teams. She noted that although police intimidation intensified over the years, Suneeta continued her work, including presenting reports on Bastar to the NHRC in Delhi. Gaira highlighted the state's targeting of MBM and argued that Suneeta's criminalisation stemmed not from any falsehood in her allegations, but from her role in bringing evidence of state violence to wider public attention. She concluded by saying that the government follows a policy of "Shoot the messenger. Do not let the message get out."
Prof. Karen Gabriel of St. Stephen's College spoke on the broader impact of repression, noting how arrests not only criminalise individuals but devastate lives and create a climate of fear. Referring to the government's campaign against both the "Naxalism of the pen and the gun," she warned that the ambit of "Naxalism of the pen" is broad and vague, thereby leading to dissent itself increasingly being treated as a crime and called for resistance to corporate plunder and militarisation.
Photographer and journalist Bhumika Saraswati shared her memories and interactions with Suneeta while documenting MBM protests and the state's atrocities in Bastar.
Adv. Kawalpreet Kaur connected Suneeta's case to wider patterns of repression, citing the criminalisation of the Noida workers' protests, custodial torture, and the recent abduction and torture of youth activists by Delhi Police's Special Cell. She questioned who the state's model of development actually serves when opposition to corporate exploitation is being branded as anti-development.
Deepika, activist at the People's Union for Democratic Rights (PUDR), discussed resistance to mining projects in Odisha's Sijimali region and highlighted the growing use of ordinary criminal provisions to suppress democratic movements, alongside special security laws.
Former Delhi University professor Nandita Narain urged people not to remain silent in the face of injustice. She said "People ask me "why are you not scared to speak up in these times?" I think that since we are mortal beings and will die some day, we should live our life to the fullest and fight to make this world a better place." She spoke about how the privatisation and attack on the education sector is being done to criminalise dissent, praised Suneeta's commitment to bringing change in society, and expressed concern over the increasing use of methods such as custodial torture and enforced disappearances which mirror the tactics used by the state of Israel. She said that as a teacher she believes people like Suneeta have really understood that the true meaning of education is to fight for a better world.
