The Pencil Stub - Mahatma Gandhi There is a beautiful story about Mahatma Gandhi. He would use even the smallest pencil stub until it became impossible to write with it. Once, someone offered him a new pencil and asked,

"Bapu, why don't you just use this?"

Gandhi smiled and replied that wasting even a small pencil was a form of violence. Every pencil represented someone's hard work, the resources of nature, and society's effort. Throwing it away before its full use was not just wasteful; it was disrespectful. Perhaps sustainability doesn't begin with billion-dollar climate policies. It begins with small habits that we practise every day. Simplicity is not about having less; it is about wasting less. Sometimes, the smallest pencil teaches the biggest lesson. Harekala Hajabba: The Fruit Seller Who Built a School Sometimes, the biggest revolutions don't begin in Parliament or boardrooms. They begin in the heart of an ordinary person who refuses to accept an ordinary problem. Harekala Hajabba was one such person. Born into a poor family in a small village in Karnataka, Hajabba never had the opportunity to go to school. To earn a living, he spent his life selling oranges at a bus stand. He had neither wealth nor education nor influence. Yet, he possessed something far more powerful—a deep understanding of what it means to be deprived of education. One day, a foreign tourist asked him the price of oranges in English. Hajabba could not understand the question or respond. For most people, it would have been an embarrassing moment soon forgotten. For Hajabba, it became a turning point. He realised that illiteracy doesn't just limit opportunities; it also takes away confidence and dignity. Instead of blaming his circumstances, he asked a different question: "Can I ensure that the next generation doesn't suffer what I did?" At that time, his village had no school. Children had to travel long distances for basic education, and many dropped out before completing their studies. Hajabba decided that his village needed a school—even if he had to build it himself. From his meagre income as an orange seller, he began saving a small amount every day. Rupee by rupee, year after year, he accumulated funds while tirelessly approaching government officials to sanction a school. His dream was not built overnight; it was built through patience, sacrifice and unwavering determination. His persistence finally paid off in 2000, when a government primary school was established in Harekala village. Over time, it expanded and provided quality education to hundreds of children, transforming the future of an entire community. What makes his story even more remarkable is that success never changed him. Even after receiving the Padma Shri in 2020, Hajabba continued to live simply, reminding us that true service is driven by purpose, not recognition. His life teaches us a profound lesson:

Real changemakers are not always the most powerful people; they are often ordinary individuals who refuse to remain indifferent.

Solipsism — The Philosophical Opposite of Empathy Here's a strange thought experiment to start with: imagine the last person alive after some catastrophe. He might genuinely come to believe he's the only mind left in the universe. But that alone doesn't make him a solipsist — that's just a fact about his circumstances, not a philosophical position. Real solipsism goes deeper than that. It's not the belief that you happen to be alone. It's the inability to even make sense of the idea that anyone else's experience could be real in the way yours is. Ask a true solipsist what "pain" means, and he can only ever mean his own pain — the word simply doesn't stretch to cover anyone else's.
