| 2 | A quick personal reflection on building apps
It’s been a while since I stopped building random web and mobile apps. frankly, I got tired of building things nobody uses and getting zero return. even worse is getting those dreaded emails from MongoDB, Supabase, and cloud providers saying: "Your database will be paused due to inactivity for the past 2–3 weeks." why spend weeks building something that doesn’t move the needle? Instead, I shifted my focus toward finding what actually works in the market. Here is my perspective:
1. If you’re a beginner: Build whatever excites your curiosity. don’t worry about monetization or user retention yet. just focus on learning, breaking things, and building skills.
2. If you’ve been coding for a while: you need to start thinking commercially. the ultimate goal is solving real, painful problems and making money. In Ethiopia specifically, flashy consumer apps rarely gain paid traction. If you truly want to succeed here, look into like ERP systems and B2B software. businesses have real operational pain points and budgets to fix them. so don’t waste time building another toy project. think big and solve real business problems.

| 15 | Something hit me this week is how AI has completely changed how CEOs and CTOs look at software development. It feels like leadership assumes AI does everything now, so they expect tons of features and fixes delivered in a fraction of the time. yes, AI does amazing things of course. but my real fear is what happens to production systems. developers (including me) end up rushing out fixes without truly understanding the root cause just to avoid hearing that's all you did? when management expects lightning fast turnarounds on tasks that actually need careful thought.
