Ergül Çiçekler, the Istanbul representative of the Construction and Road Workers' Union, was arrested on June 18th during operations conducted before the NATO summit. He is still being held in Silivri prison. Ergül Çiçekler was previously a revolutionary prisoner who spent 28 years in jail and was released 1.5 years ago. On July 24, an international scientific conference entitled “The 73rd Anniversary of the Victory in the Korean War: Lessons of History and Resistance to U.S. Imperialism at the Present Stage” was held in Moscow. The conference was organized with the support of the Embassy of the DPRK through the joint efforts of the DPRK International Solidarity Group, the Russian Society for Friendship and Cultural Cooperation with the DPRK, the World Anti-Imperialist Platform, and the International Association of Peace Foundations. Prominent political and public figures, scholars, and representatives of progressive organizations from various countries—including Russia, China, Greece, Zimbabwe, Serbia, Romania, Spain, Guinea-Bissau, Belgium, Italy, Hungary, France, Chile, and others—participated in the conference. During the 1930s, the share of national defence in the budget rose from 10 to 25 percent. The Red Army’s strength grew from under a million to more than four million. By 1939, the Soviet Union had the largest and most extensively equipped army in the world and was annually producing 10,000 planes, 3,000 tanks, 17,000 artillery pieces and 114,000 machine guns. Russian military strategist Boris Shaposhnikov believed, like Carl von Clausewitz before him, that war was a continuation of politics and, therefore, that the war’s goals and overall direction were the prerogative of the political leadership. PDP Statement: Lee Jae-myung’s Trip to Ankara Is a March Toward War Today, what is called the “defense industry” is not about defense but about facilitating killing. Producing weapons for NATO is not exports—it is aiding and abetting killing and massacre. Do they truly not understand that the ‘ROK’ weapons exported to NATO are being used as instruments of killing and massacre against countless anti-imperialist peoples? Moreover, NATO has gone beyond the North Atlantic region and has become the command headquarters for a world war 3 conducted on a global scale. NATO’s attempt to designate the ‘ROK’ as an arsenal and logistical base in itself dramatically heightens the danger of war on the Korean Peninsula and throughout East Asia. It should not be overlooked that, in the Ukraine war in which NATO is directly involved, the DPRK is supporting Russia. NATO is cunningly and actively encouraging the ‘ROK’ to wage war against the DPRK. Is the Lee Jae-myung administration determined to wage war against the DPRK? It should not deceive itself into believing that the DPRK is unaware of its true nature—saying one thing while doing another in the most shameless manner.
