*️⃣Xi’an CCBD (Centre Culture Business District)
Architect #Heatherwick #ThomasHeatherwick
City #Xian
Country #China #AP
🔤The outdoor streets of the district converge at the central plaza where the Xi’an Tree, a vertical park, creates a natural gathering point. Visitors can ascend its 56 elevated ‘petals’, or terraces, where a sequence of cascading gardens follows the biomes of the ancient Silk Route from the alpine tundra to the dry steppe.
Ceramics are at the heart of the 155,000m² neighbourhood, with crafted tiles cladding the facade, columns and curving beams, a nod to the ancient capital’s famous Terracotta Army.
The district has been designed to offer visual complexity from three distances. At a city-scale, it appears as a new neighbourhood of the city with a distinctive skyline inspired by the roofs of the Chinese temples of Xi’an. At a street distance, the varying levels created by the interlocking frames and landscape terraces provide different vantage points of the central plaza as well as the city around it. Finally, at door-level, the design offers a sensory experience in its use of materials and nature, such as ceramic lift buttons and soft-edged stones in the paving patterns.

*️⃣Habitat '67
Architect #Safdie #MosheSafdie
City #Montreal
Country #Canada #NA
🔤Habitat was the major theme exhibition of the 1967 Montreal World Exposition. As a landmark demonstration project, it pioneered a vision for urban housing using the technology of pre-fabricated construction. As a break-through building type that continues to resonate today, Habitat seeks to create a vital neighborhood with open spaces, garden terraces and many other amenities.
In Habitat ’67 all the parts of the building, including the units, the pedestrian streets, and the elevator cores, participate as load-carrying members. The units are connected to each other by post-tensioning, high-tension rods, cables, and welding, all of which combine to form a continuous suspension system.
A factory on the site fabricated the box modules, each roughly 600 square feet in size. They were lifted and stacked by cranes and post tensioned to create the stepped form.

🔤 Inspired by the vision of a ‘city in a garden’ imagined by Lee Kuan Yew fifty years ago, and by the lush tropical setting of the area, the studio’s design is a radical departure from the glass and steel tower typology. #context
The apartments are lifted 27 metres above an intensely planted ground-level tropical garden. The #greenery from the garden is threaded upwards and around the building through a series of planted chandeliers.
Over time, the building is designed to mature, as the lush planting grows, like a sapling that has taken root beneath the streets, pulling the landscape of Singapore up into the sky.

Architect #MAD
City #Haikou
Country #China #AP
🔤Its organic, fluid shape resembles an imaginary marine creature with openings of various sizes that add to the mystery of the architecture, therefore further evokes the audience’s imagination and desire to explore.
The circular openings of the building are reminiscent of holes forged by wildlife or seas, blurring the boundary between architecture and nature.
MAD champions an "anti-material" approach, avoiding the expression of structure, thus dissolving the inherent everyday perception of the material and allowing the spatial feeling itself to become the main subject. Here, #rawconcrete is a liquid material, characterized by its flowing, soft, and variable structural form.

*️⃣Suleiman-Too Museum
Architect #Nazarov #KubanychbekNazarov
City #Osh
Country #Kyrgyzstan #AP
🔤Constructed during the Soviet era, museum's architecture reflects a blend of utilitarian design principles and a deep respect for the site’s natural significance. #retro
It's structure is partially embedded into the mountain, leveraging its #steel arch contours to create a unique interaction between built and natural environments. The use of concrete and stone in the building’s construction emphasizes durability while visually connecting the structure to the surrounding mountain. #context
The museum’s design also respects the spiritual significance of Suleiman-Too Mountain. It avoids excessive ornamentation, aligning with the solemnity of a place long regarded as a pilgrimage site. This architectural restraint reflects a sensitivity to the site’s cultural and religious importance.

🔤The tower’s design divides its volume into two halves enclosed by a single facade shell. The emerging space between these two halves extends the full height of the tower, creating the world’s tallest atrium at almost 200 m. #record@simoderna
Each half of the building is serviced by its own core so that the two sides basically operate as independent towers, belted together by steel trusses and skybridges ringing them into a stable structural unit. Each side is designed with a glazed interior facade, facing its twin opposite.
The atrium brings natural light deep within the building, acting as a thermal chimney with an integrated ventilation system that maintains positive pressure at low level to limit air ingress and provides an effective clean air filtration process within the tower’s internal environment.

*️⃣Drawing Gallery at Château La Coste
Architect #Rogers #RichardRogers #RSHP
City #AixenProvence close to #Marseille
Country #France #EU
🔤Designed to ensure minimal ecological impact the drawing gallery cantilevers 27 meters outward to a point 18 meters above an ancient Roman track, framing the historic ruin of La Quille.
It is supported within a #orange structure that is both brightly highlighted and placed outside like many of the seminal buildings by Richard Rogers including the Millennium Dome and Centre Pompidou.
The gallery soars out into the canopy of the trees to ‘capture the view’ of the mountains of the Luberon. In contrast to the neutral gallery space, the legibility of the external #steel structure is enhanced by its bold color, specifically chosen both to compliment, but also contrast with the surrounding seasonal landscape.
Elegantly nestled among trees, it is a fitting addition to Château La Coste’s Architectural & Art Walk, joining a pantheon of structures designed by legendary architects like Renzo Piano, Tadao Ando, Jean Nouvel, Kengo Kuma and Frank Gehry.

*️⃣Lloyd’s building
Architect #Rogers #RichardRogers #RSHP
City #London
Country #England #EU
🔤Lloyd’s of London is the world’s greatest insurance market. It had moved its dealing room twice and wanted a building that would provide for its needs well into the 21st century. It was also imperative that Lloyd’s could continue their operations unhindered during the rebuilding operation, which almost inevitably involved the demolition of the existing 1928 building. The competition for a new building was won on the basis not of an architectural proposal but of a strategy for the future of this key City institution.
Richard Rogers Partnership proposed a building where the dealing room could expand or contract, according to the needs of the market, by means of a series of galleries around a central space. To maximise space, services are banished to the perimeter. As the architectural form of the building evolved, particular attention was paid to its impact on the surrounding area, especially on the listed 19th century Leadenhall Market.
This is similar to the Centre Pompidou, which Rogers completed with Renzo Piano in the late 1970s, and has equally uncluttered and highly flexible internal spaces.
As a result, Lloyd’s became a complex grouping of towers, almost Gothic in feeling – an effect enhanced by the height of the external plant-room towers.
The concept is of ‘Served and Servant’ spaces , in which servant zones such as stairs, lifts, bathrooms and mechanical services stand freely in concentrated towers outside the mass of the building, creating a highly expressive and legible structure and lending an immediate sense of order and hierarchy.

City #Changsha
Country #China #AP
🔤The new Culture & Arts Centre by Zaha Hadid Architects incorporates a contemporary art museum, a theatre and a multipurpose hall with bars, hospitality suites, as well as spaces for community workshops. #mixeduse
The center’s white structures take on futuristic forms, featuring ribbon-like undulations both inside and out that reflect the pedestrian pathways that weave through the campus, not to mention the walking trails on the adjacent Festival Island.
These three civic institutions are uniquely defined and separate, yet complement each other with different opening times creating vitality throughout the day and evening. The theatre becomes active as the art museum begins to conclude its day-time operations, whilst the variety of events in the smaller theatre ensures it will be used at all times.

🔤Simple beam components generate connections and permeability through interpenetration, overlapping, and cantilevering.
This complexity, arising from the accumulation of simple elements, resonates with a traditional construction technique widely used in the Han Dynasty known as tícòu (题凑). The term tí refers to the ends of wooden beams, while còu describes the method of their arrangement. This method embodies a connection with Qin–Han culture, and the #black and #red colors used are those revered in the Han period.
In terms of color, the building demonstrates regional distinctiveness—its red edges and corners stand out among the high-rises, offering people a sense of orientation and belonging.
In addition, the red components form part of the building’s ventilation system, while the black components contain water that acts as a coolant. Together they create an external ecological energy-saving system. #sustainability

Architect #Kreijkamp #DriesKreijkamp
City #sHertogenbosch #Denbosch
Country #Netherlands #EU
🔤During the late 60s, the Dutch Government started to fund experimental housing projects. This period allowed some iconic structures of today, such as the Cube House, to start taking shape. #retro
Dries Kreijkamp began experimenting with new forms of living within spherical spaces. The word Bolwoningen translates as ball or bulb houses. The scheme he produced was simple, and consisted of two interlocking parts: a cylindrical base, accommodating storage and utility spaces.
The architect originally designed the structure to be made of polyester to ensure its incredible lightness. The polyester changed into two concrete layers with glass-fiber reinforcement and rock wool insulation. #GFRC
With its lightweight, affordable, and adaptable design, spherical houses can be located anywhere. Enabling this was Krejikamp’s path toward making them widespread.
A more detailed history and an outcome.

Architect #Rich #PeterRich
City #Weipe close to #Musina
Country #SouthAfrica #AF
🔤Peter Rich has designed a visitor's center which includes spaces to tell the stories of the place and house artifacts, along with tourist facilities and SANParks offices.
The complex is a collection of #stone cladded vaults balancing on the sloped site, against the backdrop of Sandstone formations and mopane woodlands. The vaults have been designed in collaboration MIT and Univ. of Cambridge, using a 600 years old construction system to achieve a low economical and environmental impact. #budget
The traditional timbrel vaulting, using locally made pressed soil cement tiles, allows the design to be materialized with minimal formwork and no steel reinforcement. In addition, the ambition was to also integrate local unskilled labor into a poverty relief program by training them to produce the over 200,000 tiles necessary in the construction of the domes.
