*️⃣Konst i tunnelbanan - art in Stockholm metro
City #Stockholm
Country #Sweden #EU
🔤The Stockholm metro is often described as the "world's longest art gallery" and is famous for the public art integrated into 94 of its 100 stations, including sculptures, rock formations, mosaics, paintings, light installations, engravings, and reliefs created by over 150 artists. #district@simoderna
Advocacy for art on the metro was driven by artists Vera Nilsson and Siri Derkert, By 1957, Stockholm City Council established a program to commission works for new stations, starting with T-Centralen (1st and 3rd pictures). #retro@simoderna
Beyond aesthetics, Stockholm regional public body believes that art at the stations contributes to a calm and safe environment and reduces vandalism and graffiti.
As another example be wandering through the entrance hall to Odenplan station (4th picture) to be captivated by the ‘lifeline’, a pattern of fluorescent lights modelled from the heartbeat of the artist’s (David Svensson) son.

*️⃣ Jewel Changi Airport
Architect #Safdie #MosheSafdie
Country #Singapore #AP
🔤"Jewel weaves together an experience of nature and the marketplace, dramatically asserting the idea of the airport as an uplifting and vibrant urban center, engaging travelers, visitors and residents, and echoing Singapore’s reputation as ‘The City in the Garden’." - Moshe Safdie. #quote
The Rain Vortex is the world’s tallest indoor waterfall and transforms into a light and sound show in the evening. During the region’s frequent and powerful thunderstorms, recirculated, natural rainwater will flow at more than 10,000 gallons per minute, which helps provide cooling and airflow in the landscape environment, collecting significant rainwater to be re-used in the building. By night, the glazed facade helps dematerialize the building, revealing the glowing garden within. #sustainability

*️⃣Tianjin Zhongshuge Bookstore
Architect #XLiving
City #Tianjin
Country #China #AP
🔤The original site was a modern building that was detached from the surrounding classical context as it is located in the Italian-style district of Tianjin, surrounded by a century-old Italian architectural cluster characterized by red bricks. #context@simoderna
The project draws inspiration from the familiar everyday object of blinds, extracting a sense of unfamiliar perception. Light passing through the #brick slats is separated into threads, intertwining light and shadow.
In the center of the building, layers of dark #blue #steel are spread out, with the color extracted from the seawater of the Tianjin port, and the more delicate cutting form corresponds to the undulating waves, interpreting the spirit of the sea that embraces all rivers and the urban temperament of Tianjin. The large arched doorways progress upwards, as if the tide is surging with ripples, symbolizing the dissemination and spread of knowledge through books.

Architect #Foster #NormanFoster
City #PhnomPenh
Country #Cambodia #AP
🔤The design embodies a strong sense of place, drawing inspiration from one of the oldest civilisations on earth, inspired by its vernacular forms, and responsive to the tropical climate.
Throughout the terminal building, soffits are inspired by traditional basket weaving. Suspended under the building’s lightweight #steel grid shell structure, a latticed soffit filters daylight into the vast terminal space throughout the day. 180 skylights are strategically placed around structural ‘trees,’ to bring natural light deep into the space while ensuring it is distributed evenly.
#Interior materials are warm and welcoming, evoking the Cambodian vernacular in a contemporary manner. The terminal will also be almost entirely run on energy generated by an onsite photovoltaic farm. #sustainability@simoderna

*️⃣Zayed National Museum
Architect #Foster #NormanFoster
City #AbuDhabi
Country #UAE #ME
🔤Zayed National Museum has just opened its doors to the public. The building’s form addresses the challenge of sustaining life in a desert environment. The museum’s five light-weight #steel wings are part of the system of natural ventilation and "... they are also symbolic of Sheikh Zayed's love of the traditional sport of falconry and have become markers on the city skyline." – Norman Foster. #quote
Air vents open at the top of the towers, taking advantage of the negative pressure on the lee-side of the profile to draw hot air out from the atrium, assisted by the thermal effect of the heat build-up on the tips of the wings. The wings are glazed to channel natural light into the galleries below. #sustainability
The museum spaces are located within a mound, which has textured faceted panels that are an abstraction of the topography of Jebel Hafeet. Materials have been carefully selected to resonate with the local surroundings and mirror historic buildings across the seven Emirates, which reflect the changing colour of the sand in different locations. #context

*️⃣XOCO 325
Architect #DDG
City #NewYork
Country #USA #NA
🔤One of the most central and unique materials used in the construction of XOCO 325 is cast #aluminium. Taking its inspiration from the Soho Cast Iron Historic District in which it is located, the building is cloaked in a custom cast aluminum façade that seems to float over a hanging glass wall. #context@simoderna
The striking design was slowly conceived of through DDG’s extensive survey and research of the neighborhood – in which it found 250 cast iron loft buildings. XOCO’s façade derived from the designers’ fascination with the historic buildings’ “kit of parts” industrialization and its reliance upon componentry and patterns.
To celebrate this style of architecture, yet modernize it for the 21st century, DDG opted to replicate the bay spacing found in the area, use cast aluminum as it is lighter and more affordable, and hang the custom structure over a massive glass wall, in order to maintain a sense of privacy for residents.

*️⃣Qatar National Library
Architect #OMA #Koolhas #RemKoolhas
City #Doha
Country #Qatar #ME
🔤"One similarity between architecture and bookmaking is that both have unbelievably long traditions but are also forced to be of the moment, constantly updating in order to survive." — Rem Koolhas #quote@simoderna.
From the beginning the idea was to make reading as accessible and as stimulating as possible to the population of Qatar as a whole. OMA thought they could achieve that by creating a building that was almost a single room, not divided in different sections or into separate floors.
The edges of the building are lifted from the ground creating three aisles which accommodate the book collection and, at the same time, enclose a central triangular space. This configuration also allows the visitor to access the building at its center, rather than laboriously entering from the perimeter. The aisles are designed as a topography of shelving, interspersed with spaces for reading, socializing and browsing.

*️⃣Sendai Mediatheque
Architect #Ito #ToyoIto
City #Sendai
Country #Japan #AP
🔤With the intentions of designing a transparent cultural media center that is supported by a unique system to allow complete visibility and transparency to the surrounding community, the Sendai Mediatheque by Toyo Ito is revolutionary in its engineering and aesthetic.
Six level steel-ribbed slabs appear to float from the street, supported by only thirteen vertical steel lattice columns that stretch from the ground plane to the roof. This striking visual quality, which is one of the most identifiable characteristics of the project, is comparable to large trees in a forest and functions as light shafts as well as storage for all of the utilities, networks, and systems.
The four largest tubes are situated at the corners of the plates, which serve as the principal means of support and bracing. Five of the nine smaller tubes contain elevators, while the other four are more crooked and carry the ducts and wires.

*️⃣Narkomfin apartment building
Architect #Ginzburg #MoiseiGinzburg
City #Moscow
Country #Russia #EU
🔤The Narkomfin Building is one of the most famous experimental projects in the USSR. The architects and engineers were given the task of shaping a new Soviet person, who would live according to the precepts of communism and ultimately become a carrier of its ideas.
This led to the creation of experimental “transitional-type” houses, of which the Narkomfin Building is one. Laundry, meals, childcare and even leisure for the residents were all supposed to take place in shared communal spaces.
Sunlight entered the apartments from the eastern façade in the morning (into the bedrooms and bathroom), while the western façade accommodated the living rooms and communal areas. This was meant to encourage people to spend as much time as possible out of bed, contributing their time and energy to society.

🔤After the war, Yugoslavia was in dire need of rebuilding a country devastated by war. At play were the most cost-effective solutions that would address both the housing shortages and administrative needs. And exactly, it was the brutalist style that could fit such a vision perfectly.
Regarding this, Aleksandar Stjepanović, author of the Faculty of Philosophy, formed one interesting conclusion regarding the bonding of architecture for directions Brutalism and states that: "Brutalism is not the result of the philosophy, but the consequences of possible conditions". #quote

Architect #Behnisch
City #Hannover

🔤From the exterior it resembles the traditional city block, whilst at its center, protected from the noise of the heavily frequented streets, lies the heart of the complex, a large, public courtyard. A distinctive, seventy-meter-high #skyscraper rises from the courtyard, detaching itself through a series of twists and turns from the formal order of the lower, perimeter building. The expressive form of the tower refers neither to the styles of the immediate surroundings, nor to the orthogonal grid of the post-war city; instead it is a response to the historical downtown geometries in the north.

🔤Long piece of architecture identical in scale to the vast landscape appears like a streak of wind passing over the lake.
Key to addressing the problem of the landscape in China is to view the architecture as a "gentle giant" of an environment, and search for a totally new relationship between natural and manmade. An entity emerges in which architecture standing in isolation sits comfortably in the natural environment, the two interacting.
One discovers a natural environment inside the building, and through its characteristics as a new outside that has sprung up within the building, forges an amiable connection with the surrounding nature. Thus a new relationship between nature and humans is born. #context

*️⃣Natural Ellipse
Architect #Endoh #MasakiEndoh
City #Tokyo
Country #Japan #AP
🔤In Shibuya, one of the busiest districts of the urban center both during the day and at night, the client wished to raise a building for two dwellings starting from a double premise: to design a peaceful house which is not entirely cut off from the busy atmosphere surrounding it.
Despite the compactness of the site — less than 45 m² — the design achieves a sense of openness through careful manipulation of light and geometry. The elliptical plan diffuses light and directs views toward the sky, producing an interior atmosphere that feels far larger than the footprint suggests.
The envelope was built on site and is made of fiber-reinforced #polymer sheet, there are thus no seams to speak of, which enhances the plastic quality of the skin.
Though thiss polymer sheet serves no structural function in regards to shear resistance in the steel columns. Instead, a lattice of steel bars are crossed reinforcing the columns laterally.

Architect #Calatrava #SantiagoCalatrava
City #PolkCity close to #Lakeland
Country #USA #NA
🔤The exterior of the building is dominated by two #white dramatic elements, the pergola and the operable roof. The pergola is a light #steel trellis that surrounds the entire building from the ground to the roof above the corridor. It provides a perceptual ceiling to the exterior arcade and terrace, while reducing the solar load on the building by over 30%.
The operable roof consists of a series of hydraulically activated brise-soleil that provide shading to the "commons" skylight. The louvers are individually controlled and can be programmed to follow the course of the sun throughout the day. #kinetic
The "commons" is a large multi-use hall illuminated by a central skylight, that can be adapted for diverse uses such as lectures, performances, ceremonies, demonstrations, fundraisers, formal dinners and school dances. It is the heart of the building and promotes interdisciplinary interaction between students and faculty.

*️⃣Bank of Georgia headquarters
Architect #Chakhava #GeorgiyChakava
City #Tbilisi
Country #Georgia #EU
🔤This particular project was the culmination of a fusion of several architectural influences of the Georgian past—traditional Georgian architecture roofs, metabolist utopias, and the horizontal skyscrapers of El Lissitzky. The structure has also been restored and converted—today, it serves as the Bank of Georgia's headquarters.
The design is based on a concept named Space City method. The idea is to use and cover less ground and give the space below the building back to nature. The architect's reference was a forest: the cores are like the trunk, the horizontal parts the crowns. Between the earth and crowns there is a lot of free space for other living beings, which create one harmonious world with the forest.
The concept that the landscape or nature "flows" through under the building was used by other architects, too. Le Corbusier worked theoretically on the "house on pilotis" and realized this idea for example from 1947 on in the Unité d'Habitation. Frank Lloyd Wright used a similar idea at Fallingwater in 1935.
George Chakhava was Georgia's Deputy Minister of Highway Construction in the 1970s. Therefore, he was both the client and the lead architect of this project. He could choose the site location best suited for the design himself.

*️⃣Oasia Hotel Downtown
Architect #WOHA architects
Country #Singapore #AP
🔤A verdant tower of green in the heart of Singapore’s dense Central Business District (CBD), Oasia Hotel Downtown is a prototype of land use intensification for the urban tropics.
Closely overlooked by surrounding towers, the tower carves out its own internal spaces and dynamic views instead of relying on external vistas for visual interest. Each sky garden is treated as an urban scale verandah, sheltered at high level by the preceding sky garden and open sided for formal and visual transparency.
Landscaping is used extensively as an architectural surface treatment and forms a major part of the development’s material palette both internally and externally. Achieving an overall Green Plot Ratio of 1,100%, the tower is conceived as a haven for birds and animals, reintroducing biodiversity into the city. This quantum of green is an exciting number, as it effectively compensates for the lack of green in 10 surrounding buildings. #greenery
