*️⃣Rolex learning center
Architect #SANAA
City #Lausanne close to #Geneva
Country #Switzerland #EU
🔤The spirit of the EPFL is based on the collaboration among universities, so eliminating the boundaries between them was one of the principles in this multipurpose space at the service of the whole university. In this way, the center favors impromptu gatherings in a context without designated itineraries.
One of the most unique aspects of the building is the absence of physical boundaries. It is an unobstructed space, defined by its artificial geography. The separation between the different functions is based on the manipulation of the horizontal plane, lifting it or subtly reducing its height with undulations that delimit the different areas, emphasizing the sensation of openness and transparency.
In this way, the silence zones are grouped together and separated from the rest by changes in height.

*️⃣AZULIK City of arts
Architect #Roth
City #FranciscoUhMay close to #Tulum
Country #Mexico #NA
🔤The centerpiece of The City of Arts's set, within a 10-acre creative complex, offers a space to explore the relationship between nature, art, and ancestry. An example of biomorphic architecture, the museum integrates its surroundings, serving as a shared habitat for flora, fauna, and contemporary design. #context@simoderna
Developed organically without plans to foster creativity, it uses native bejuco vines treated manually by local bejuqueros to achieve organic shapes.
Throughout the process, Mayan workers contributed their ancestral knowledge about materials and types of construction. Thanks to that, it was possible to avoid the use of heavy machinery. #sustainability@simoderna

Architect #Naito #HiroshiNaito
City #Tokyo
Country #Japan #AP
🔤Designed by Hiroshi Naito for the Japanese RINRI Institute of Ethics, and completed in 2021, Kioi Seido was designed with 'no particular purpose'. The brief from the client was that “The functions will be considered according to what has been done, so please design as you like."
According to a statement by Naito, “My client’s only order was that I think about the Jomon — a prehistoric era of Japanese history, known for its mysterious clay figurines, knotted-rope pottery and an aesthetic that feels both ancient and strangely abstract.
“Neither the purpose nor the function of the Pantheon is well understood,” reads Naito’s statement. “If the question was to be purposeless, I wanted to build a modern Pantheon.”

🔤The colorful façade is a screen of glass panels designed by Jaap Drupsteen that depict historical stills of Dutch television in relief. Together they form a single, new image in which the colors intermingle like a watercolor solidified in glass, a monumental portrayal of Dutch collective memory.
A silver-colored exhibition volume floats like an inverted ziggurat above the canyon. The empty space between the ziggurat and the canyon forms a large public atrium for media events and award presentations.
The Dutch national radio and television archives are stored underground in naturally climate-controlled depots grouped around a canyon, much like a large, five-level subterranean necropolis.

Architect #MAD
City #Shenzhen
Country #China #AP
🔤"Situated between the CBD of a modern, international metropolis and nature, our primary consideration was to create a public civic space where everyone can enjoy the city's precious bay resources."
"Architecture should be integrated into nature and become a landscape that can be experienced." – Ma Yansong. #quote@simoderna
Shenzhen Bay Cultural Plaza is located at the heart of this international bird corridor. Therefore, ecological conservation was prioritized from the outset of the design, with extensive planting of native vegetation to recreate intertidal feeding areas and habitats for passing birds. #sustainability@simoderna
Furthermore, a pedestrian- and vehicle-separated slow-moving network will allow people to traverse the cultural precinct freely and safely, avoiding traffic interference and enjoying public experience.

*️⃣ZILart museum
Architect #SPEECH
City #Moscow
Country #Russia #EU part
🔤The architecture of the building deliberately draws on the industrial aesthetic historically associated with the former ZIL factory. The museum’s exterior takes the form of a cubic volume wrapped in a continuous trapezoidal lattice structure, clad with copper cassettes. #context@simoderna
Particular attention is given to the large-scale entrance hall. With a height of 30 meters, #copper panel finishes, and artworks by contemporary street artists, the atrium becomes a visually striking space.
All levels of the museum are oriented toward this central volume, allowing visitors to intuitively understand the building’s layout and navigate it with ease.

🔤The design of the atrium consists of a three-dimensional concrete structure in the form of interlocking molecules as a lace of ovals, triangles and hexagons. The filtered light that enters through the circular windows as a ‘glass crown’ where scientists, staff, students and families meet, reinforcing the monumentality of the space.
The layers of stones are interrupted by friezes of white, concrete elements designed by Dutch fashion designer Iris van Herpen. Invited by Neutelings Riedijk Architects, she designed a total of 263 panels, inspired by the natural shapes of the collection which seem to be smooth as silk, thanks to a special technique developed for Naturalis.

*️⃣Bourse de Commerce
Architect #Ando #TadaoAndo
City #Paris
Country #France #EU
🔤Tadao Ando was tasked with giving the building a new lease of life as an art museum without altering the existing structure. #renovation@simoderna
Ando decided to work with the existing shape of the building to create an internal gallery without disturbing the historic fabric of the building. #heritage@simoderna
"I sought to set up a vibrant space appropriate for a venue for contemporary art by inserting, in a respectful manner, a new space within the old walls etched with the memories of the city".
Ando’s boldest architectural gesture is the #rawconcrete cylinder that he has inserted within the rotunda. The concrete structure forms a round exhibition space whose minimalist aesthetic initiates a dialogue with the grandiose glass dome and monumental 360-degree mural hovering above.

*️⃣Luce Memorial Chapel
Architect #Pei #IMPei and #ChenChiKwan #ChiKwan (Chi-Kwan)
City #Taichung
Country #Taiwan #AP
🔤The chapel was first conceived as a multi-planar, wooden structure, but the architects soon abandoned the idea of using wood due both to the humid environment and to seismic concerns.
The chapel's planes are composed of lattice beams that gradually grow thicker as they descend.
The exterior of the chapel is covered with yellow, glazed, diamond-shaped tiles echoing the diamond-shaped coffer beams on the building's interior.
The walls seem to stand independently of each other, but are actually connected by glazed slots and by small structural bow ties that are cast into the high ridge beams at the top near the ceiling.

Architect #AM2 and #NOARQ
City #Vigo
Country #Spain #EU
🔤Human beings have always been fascinated by observing the horizon. “Halo” is an answer to the right questions, an icon and a sculpture.
More important than an answer, it is a right question, and the questions were clear: can we intervene without blinding the views of the central atrium of the new intermodal station? Having asked the relevant questions, the answer is simply unavoidable, yes.
The northern route along the entire outer face is enclosed. The translucency of the outer surface ensures privacy for those living in the buildings on García Barbón.
As for the material makeup of this urban piece, the slabs and profiles of the structure are clad in #white plates of lacquered #steel, concealing the steel and concrete structures.

*️⃣La Muralla Roja
Architect #RicardoBofill #Bofill #RBTA
City #Calp close to #Benidorm
Country #Spain #EU
🔤The building makes clear references to the popular architecture of the Arab Mediterranean Area, a result of the architects' inspiration by the Mediterranean tradition of the casbah. The striking colors that cover the outer and inner facades are selected to either contrast with nature or complement its purity.
Formed like a fortress, the project appears as if it is emerging from the rocky cliffs it sits on. Its organization challenges the increasing division between public and private space through its reinterpretation of the casbah, which is the walled citadel typical of traditional architecture in North African countries. Characterized by a series of interlocking stairs, platforms, and bridges, this organization is a modern illustration of the circulation in a typical casbah, providing access to the 50 apartments that form La Muralla Roja.
In the words of Taller de Arquitectura , "the geometric basis of the layout is also an approximation of the theories of constructivism, and makes La Muralla Roja a very clear evocation of these."

🔤The façade functions as a filter, optimizing the microclimate and light conditions. During daytime, it diffuses direct sunlight, maintaining an ideal luminous environment for the interior. On the contrary, at night, the exterior resembles a lantern with illuminating quality. #nightlight@simoderna
The thick-glazed glass blocks reduce thermal transmission, which reduce more energy consumption comparing to a typical glazed facade. #sustainability@simoderna
In the center of Ho Chi Minh City, the green coverage ratio is only 0.25%, which is remarkably low in comparison to other Asian metropolitans. This lack of greenery is affecting people’s everyday life. Architect #Senda #MitsuruSenda
City #Akita
Country #Japan #AP
🔤Treating books as the collective knowledge of the past, the design is based on a coliseum, with an amphitheatre built from local cedar wood creating an incredible stage for students and their chosen texts.
Like an unfurled summer parasol, the roof is left uncovered, with each wooden beam exposed to form an intricate pattern above.
While the option of working 24-hours a day throughout the year may seem stress-inducing, the calm and natural atmosphere of the library, created by the cedar and natural shape, avoids this entirely

*️⃣Cathedral of Saint Mary of the Assumption
Architect #Nervi #PierLuigiNervi and #Belluschi #PietroBelluschi
City #SanFrancisco
Country #USA #NA
🔤The cathedral is organized on a square plan. From this geometric clarity, the building rises dramatically into a hyperbolic paraboloid roof form that soars 60m above the ground. The geometry conveys a sense of both stability and transcendence: the square anchors the structure to the earth, while the sweeping roof gestures toward the heavens.
At the roof’s apex, a cross-shaped skylight draws daylight into the interior, illuminating the altar at the center of the liturgical space. This compositional move encapsulates the post–Vatican II emphasis on collective worship.
The light is not decorative but structural to the experience of space, shaping the perception of volume and material with an almost liturgical rhythm.

*️⃣Coffee & Tree + Canopy
Architect #SelgasCano
City #Rizhao
Country #China #AP
🔤Wiggling through a phalanx of mid-rise housing blocks, a covered walkway and attached café serve as a colorful antidote to the regimented architecture all around it.
The project goal was to enliven the housing blocks and create visual connections. The contrast to the red-brick, residential monoliths could not be starker.
A high-energy jolt of architectural exuberance, the walkway and café projects entice residents to come and relax. Bisecting the property, they serve as common ground for kids, parents, and seniors. They’re both a line and a hub. And they do all this by balancing the needs for both standing out and fitting in, especially with nature.
“The most important part of the project is the landscape,” says Selgas. Whether you’re on the walkway or in the café, you’re always surrounded by trees and plantings. “On most projects, landscaping is the last thing considered and the first to get cut. Not here.” #greenery@simoderna

🔤 CaixaForum is conceived as an urban magnet attracting not only art-lovers but all people of Madrid and from outside. The attraction will not only be CaixaForum’s cultural program, but also the building itself, insofar that its heavy mass, is detached from the ground in apparent defiance of the laws of gravity and, in a real sense, draws the visitors inside.
The classified brick walls of the former power station are reminiscences of the early industrial age in Madrid. The only material of the old power station that we wanted to save was the classified brick shell. This opened a completely novel and spectacular perspective. The removal of the base of the building left a covered plaza under the brick shell, which now appears to float above the street level. This sheltered space under the CaixaForum offers shade to visitors. #heritage@simoderna

🔤In the architects' intention, the shape is meant to symbolize the elevation of humanity towards God. Nonetheless, in time, the morphology of the building was infused with additional religious meaning, being read as a lighthouse guiding devotees towards divinity, or a teardrop, in connection to the sacred event that led to the erection of the church.
Pierre Parat would say many years later:
"I like the architecture that reveals itself, that is honest, I don't like gimmicks and ornament".#quote@simoderna The concrete structure reaches a height of 94,3m and a statue reproducing the image of the crying effigy sits at the top of the Sanctuary.
