What started as foul-smelling tap water in Delhi’s Gulmohar Park has exposed a much larger problem with urban water systems. For over two weeks, residents reported sewage-contaminated water flowing through drinking water pipelines, forcing many households to rely on tankers and bottled water. Experts told that such incidents are not isolated and have been reported in cities including Indore, Pune, Noida, Gurugram and Bengaluru. Ageing pipelines, leaks, intermittent water supply and sewage lines running close to drinking water networks create conditions where contamination can easily occur, especially when water pressure drops. The episode highlights how gaps between engineering standards and on-ground realities continue to threaten urban water safety across India.

In a landmark #judgement aimed at improving the #legal and #social landscape for #rape survivors and pinning the hope on society that it will gradually change the victim-blaming attitude, the Jharkhand High Court, on Monday (June 08), issued a slew of directions to the state government, ranging from mandatory zero #FIR registration to the absolute prohibition of the “two-finger test”. A bench of Chief Justice M S Sonak and Justice Rajesh Shankar was hearing a suo motu #PIL regarding the protection and rehabilitation of rape survivors. “We are pained to observe that in certain situations, the rape victims are subjected to social ridicule as if they are the accused. In some cases, the victims are socially ostracised, causing immense difficulty, including psychological distress to the victims and their families,” the court said on June 8. More on TPP ⚠️

India recorded 1,70,746 suicide deaths in 2024. #Maharashtra reported the highest number of suicides at 22,174, followed by #TamilNadu (19,965) and #MadhyaPradesh (15,491). Karnataka, #WestBengal, Telangana and #Kerala also recorded more than 10,000 deaths during the year. The gender-wise data shows distinct patterns. Male suicides accounted for 1,25,449 deaths, nearly 3/4ths of the national total. Maharashtra recorded the highest number of #male suicide deaths at 17,857, followed by Tamil Nadu (14,770) and Madhya Pradesh (10,837). Among #women, 45,245 suicide deaths were recorded nationwide. Tamil Nadu reported the highest number of female suicides at 5,171, ahead of West Bengal (4,847) and Maharashtra (4,313). These maps show the state-wise distribution of total, male and female suicide deaths in 2024, based on data published in the NCRB's Accidental Deaths & Suicides in India 2024 report.

Child marriage has declined in India over the years, but NFHS-5 data shows it remains a reality across several states. According to the National Family Health Survey-5, 2019–21, 23% of women aged 20–24 in India were married before turning 18. The numbers vary sharply across the country. West Bengal recorded the highest share at 41.6%, followed by Bihar at 40.8%, Tripura at 40.1%, Jharkhand at 32.2% and Assam at 31.8%. High shares were also reported in Andhra Pradesh at 29.3%, Telangana at 27%, Rajasthan at 25.4%, Gujarat at 23.1%, Maharashtra at 21.9%, Madhya Pradesh at 21.5%, Odisha at 20.5% and Karnataka at 11.9%. At the other end, the lowest shares were seen in Ladakh at 2.1%, Lakshadweep at 2.9%, Jammu & Kashmir at 4.5%, Himachal Pradesh at 5.4%, Kerala at 6.3% and Goa at 5.2%. The data shows that while child marriage is no longer as widespread as before, it continues to affect girls’ education, health, safety and childhood in many parts of India.
