﷽ Someone asked, "How do you build consistency?" There are many means, but I will suffice with a few of the most important: 1. Seeking Allah's Help (الاستعانة بالله جل وعلا) The first and greatest key to consistency is seeking Allah's aid. No one remains steadfast except by His permission. It is for this reason that the Prophet ﷺ taught us to frequently say: لا حول ولا قوة إلا بالله "There is no might nor power except with Allah." The poet also said: إذا لم يكن عونٌ من الله للفتى فأولُ ما يجني عليه اجتهادُه "If Allah does not aid a young man, the first thing that will ruin him is his own striving." 2. Adopting Moderation and Balance (الأخذ بالتوسط والاعتدال في الأعمال) Going to extremes often leads to burnout, which eventually results in complete negligence and abandonment. The Prophet ﷺ said: هلك المتنطعون "The extremists have perished." Likewise, laziness and procrastination lead nowhere and produce no results. وما طُلِبَ المعيشةُ بالتمني ولكن ألقِ دلوكَ في الدلاء "Livelihood is not attained through wishful thinking; rather, lower your bucket among the buckets." The path of moderation (التوسط) is the Prophetic guidance and the Islamic way. That is why our religion teaches us to combine fear and hope (الخوف والرجاء)—the two wings of the believer. Without one of them, a person becomes unbalanced, as Imām Aḥmad رحمه الله mentioned. Likewise, the religion teaches us: ساعة وساعة "There is a time for this and a time for that." And the Prophet ﷺ said: لكل عمل شِرَّة، ولكل شِرَّة فترة "Every deed has a period of enthusiasm, and every enthusiasm is followed by a period of decline." Hence, he ﷺ instructed us: سددوا وقاربوا "Be upright and do your best to come as close to perfection as you can." 3. Train Yourself to Make Up What You Miss (تعويد النفس على قضاء الفائت) Train yourself to make up whatever you miss—whether it is a prayer, a fast, your daily portion of adhkār, your Qur'an recitation, maintaining family ties, visiting others, or any other righteous deed. Do not become careless regarding what slips away. Consistency does not mean that you will never fall short. Rather, it means that whenever you slip, you return. The Prophet ﷺ said: لو لم تذنبوا لذهب الله بكم، ولجاء بقوم يذنبون فيستغفرون الله فيغفر لهم "If you did not commit sins, Allah would replace you with a people who would commit sins, seek His forgiveness, and He would forgive them." A Beautiful Example Bilāl al-Ḥabashī (رضي الله عنه), whom Islam elevated to such a lofty rank, was once asked by the Messenger of Allah ﷺ: «يا بلال، حدِّثني بأرجى عملٍ عملته في الإسلام، فإني سمعت دفَّ نعليك بين يديَّ في الجنة.» Bilāl replied: «ما عملت عملاً أرجى عندي أني لم أتطهَّر طهورًا في ساعةٍ من ليلٍ أو نهارٍ إلا صليت بذلك الطهور ما كُتب لي أن أُصلي.» (متفق عليه) "O Bilāl, tell me about the deed you have done in Islam from which you have the greatest hope, for I heard the sound of your footsteps ahead of me in Paradise." Bilāl answered: "I know of no deed from which I have greater hope than this: whenever I performed ablution during the night or day, I would pray with that purification whatever Allah had decreed for me to pray." It was not one extraordinary act that distinguished Bilāl, but a simple deed performed with remarkable consistency. There are many other ways to cultivate consistency, but these will suffice for now. A final note: Consistency is the key. One of the greatest reasons many people never reach their desired goals is inconsistency. Imagine if you memorized just one and a half lines of the Qur'an every day. With consistency, you would complete the entire Qur'an in approximately 20 years. Likewise, if you memorized one hadith each day, you could complete the six major books of Hadith in about 25 years, approximately. Yet, because of haste, inconsistency, and laziness, many of us fail to remain steadfast. We prefer collecting scattered pieces of information—نُتَف—from various fields instead of remaining committed to one path until it bears fruit. Nothing lasting is built upon haste and inconsistency. As it is said: من استعجل شيئًا قبل أوانه عوقب بحرمانه "Whoever hastens for something before its proper time is punished by being deprived of it." And the poet beautifully said: اليوم شيء وغدًا مثله من نقط الخير التي تلتقط يحصل المرء بها حكمة وإنما السيل اجتماع النقط "Today a little, and tomorrow another little— small drops of goodness gathered over time. Through them a person attains wisdom, for indeed, a flood is nothing but the gathering of drops." If consistency had no virtue other than the fact that the most beloved deeds to Allah are those done consistently, and that it was the way of His Messenger ﷺ, that alone would suffice every person of sound intellect. The Prophet ﷺ said: وَإِنَّ أَحَبَّ الْعَمَلِ إِلَى اللَّهِ أَدْوَمُهُ وَإِنْ قَلَّ، وَكَانَ إِذَا عَمِلَ عَمَلًا أَثْبَتَهُ. (متفق عليه) "Indeed, the most beloved deeds to Allah are those that are done consistently, even if they are few." And whenever he ﷺ performed a deed, he remained constant upon it. And when ʿĀʾishah (رضي الله عنها) was asked whether the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would devote certain days to specific acts of worship, she replied: لا، كان عمله دِيمة. (رواه مسلم) "No. His deeds were continuous and consistent." So, cultivate consistency, and by the permission of Allah, you will surpass many people. Success is not about achieving something overnight only for it to fade away. Rather, it is about building something that endures. As the poet said: لكلٍّ إلى شأوِ العُلا حركاتٌ ولكنْ عزيزٌ في الرجالِ ثباتُ "Everyone strives toward the heights of excellence, but what is truly rare among men is steadfastness." Imām Ibnul-Qayyim (may Allah have mercy on him) said: "The greatest thing that souls can acquire, hearts can attain, and by which a servant achieves honor in this world and the Hereafter is knowledge and faith (īmān). This is why Allah, Glorified and Exalted, joined them together in His saying: 'And those who were given knowledge and faith will say, "Indeed, you remained according to the decree of Allah until the Day of Resurrection. So this is the Day of Resurrection..."' (Qur'an 30:56) And His saying: 'Allah will raise those who have believed among you and those who were given knowledge by degrees.' ﷽ ✨️Reflections Shayṭān has a very tricky way of operating. He fills a person's heart with worries and anxiety. Then, when he sees that the person is seeking relief through things that do not truly benefit them, he keeps drawing them back to those distractions. He gives temporary moments of escape, only to expose them to their worries again and again, until they become attached to those distractions, eventually finding it difficult to leave them. Allah says: «﴿إِنَّمَا ٱلنَّجۡوَىٰ مِنَ ٱلشَّيۡطَٰنِ لِيَحۡزُنَ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟﴾ "Private whispering is only from Shayṭān, so that he may grieve those who have believed." (Al-Mujādilah: 10)» Have you noticed that some people cannot find peace in listening to a beneficial lecture or sincere reminder, yet they feel "relieved" after watching movies for hours? Have you noticed how others turn to smoking, drinking, or other harmful habits to "clear their minds"? These are among the ways Shayṭān deceives people—offering temporary distraction instead of genuine relief. But when Shayṭān sees that a servant turns back to Allah, remembers Him, seeks knowledge, recites the Qur'an, and occupies themselves with what benefits them, he loses that avenue and begins searching for other ways to mislead them. So remain vigilant against the traps of Shayṭān, and constantly seek the help of Allah. THE RIGHTS OF BROTHERHOOD By Ṣāliḥ Ālush-Shaykh (may Allah preserve him) 1️⃣ The first right: To love your brother for the sake of Allah, not for any worldly interest. 2️⃣ The second right: To support your brother with your wealth and with your own efforts. 3️⃣ The third right: To safeguard your brother's honour. This includes: Remaining silent about his faults. Not probing him with excessive questioning. Protecting his secrets. 4️⃣ The fourth right: To avoid harboring سوء الظن (negative suspicion) toward your brother. 5️⃣ The fifth right: To avoid arguments and disputation with your brothers. Arguments often stem from: Refusing to yield to another's viewpoint. The desire to prevail over others. Failing to guard against the harms of the tongue. 6️⃣ The sixth right: To use your tongue in goodness toward your brother. This includes: Not being stingy with kind and beneficial words. Thanking him for the good he does. Speaking well of him in his absence. 7️⃣ The seventh right: To pardon his mistakes and slips. 8️⃣ The eighth right: To rejoice in the blessings Allah, the Exalted, has bestowed upon him—whether wealth, knowledge, religious commitment, or righteousness. 9️⃣ The ninth right: That there be mutual cooperation between you and your brothers in righteousness and goodness. 🔟 The tenth right: That close companions in brotherhood consult one another and cultivate harmony and affection among themselves. ﷽ ✨ Reflections Time has been running since Allah created it. We all know that time is nothing but a succession of days and nights. Allah says: ﴿إِنَّ رَبَّكُمُ اللَّهُ الَّذِي خَلَقَ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضَ فِي سِتَّةِ أَيَّامٍ ثُمَّ اسْتَوَىٰ عَلَى الْعَرْشِ يُغْشِي اللَّيْلَ النَّهَارَ يَطْلُبُهُ حَثِيثًا﴾ "Indeed, your Lord is Allah, who created the heavens and the earth in six days, then rose over the Throne. He causes the night to cover the day, pursuing it swiftly." Notice Allah's statement: 【يَطْلُبُهُ حَثِيثًا】 ("pursuing it swiftly"). The mufassirūn explained it as سريعًا (swiftly). Ibn Kathīr said in his Tafsīr: "سريعًا لا يتأخر عنه، بل إذا ذهب هذا جاء هذا، وإذا جاء هذا ذهب هذا." "Swiftly, without delay. Whenever one departs, the other immediately comes, and whenever one arrives, the other departs." Then what about the saying of the Prophet ﷺ about the end of the world: «يتقارب الزمان» "Time will draw closer together." This indicates that time will seem to pass even more quickly as the end of the world approaches. The lesson is: do not waste time!!. Its nature is to pass swiftly, and it will seem even swifter near the end of time. Use every moment wisely, and do not let a single one slip away. It was narrated that ʿĪsā ibn Maryam (peace be upon him) said: "إن هذا الليل والنهار خزانتان، فانظروا ما تضعون فيهما." "Indeed, this night and day are two storehouses, so be mindful of what you deposit in them." The Ruling on Talking During the Friday Khutbah While Outside the Mosque ‼️ Question: Honorable Shaykh, if I am close to the mosque and can hear the Friday preacher delivering the khutbah while I am at home speaking to my wife or children, or if I am near the mosque on the road and I greet those around me or return someone's greeting while the imam is delivering the khutbah, does the hadith, "Whoever engages in idle speech, then there is no Jumu'ah for him," apply to me? He will not receive the reward of the one who remained silent and listened attentively. As for speaking outside the mosque with one's family or in the street: if he can hear the khutbah of the imam behind whom he intends to pray, then it is not permissible for him to speak, because that is his imam. However, if he merely hears the khutbah from another mosque that he happens to pass by while its imam is delivering the sermon, then there is no harm in speaking, whether with his family or while in the street, and doing so does not affect him. 📌 An immense reward—be keen to attain it. On the authority of Aws ibn Aws (رضي الله عنه), who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: "Whoever performs ghusl on Friday and bathes, goes early and arrives early, walks and does not ride, sits close to the Imam, listens attentively, and does not engage in idle speech, will receive for every step he takes the reward of one year's worth of fasting and standing in prayer." 📚 Reported by Abu Dawud, at-Tirmidhi, and Ibn Majah.
