🌎 Culture Share Saturday: Discover South Carolina!
This Saturday, let’s explore some fun cultural facts about South Carolina and discover how we can bring them into the English language classroom!
🧋 In South Carolina, if you order “tea,” you’ll most likely get sweet iced tea! In the South, “tea” by default means cold (iced) and sweetened with sugar. If you actually want unsweetened tea or hot tea, you usually have to specify it (for example, “unsweet tea” or “hot tea”). Unlike Russian tea culture, where hot tea is often enjoyed from a teapot and served with lemon, jam, or other accompaniments, sweet iced tea is a Southern favorite.
⛳ Golf has deep historical roots in South Carolina. The South Carolina Golf Club was founded in Charleston in 1786, and the club played at Harleston Green, considered the first golf course in America. Today, Myrtle Beach is also famous for its many mini-golf courses!
😊 “Hush Your Mouth!” — What Does It Really Mean?
This expression might sound rude at first, but in South Carolina, it can be used playfully or jokingly, depending on the tone and context.
💡 Teaching Activity: Invite students to compare tea-drinking traditions in the United States and Russia. Have them discuss their preferences and practice ordering tea in a café using expressions such as “sweet tea,” “unsweetened tea,” and “hot tea.”

| 3 | ✨ Thursday Teaching Activity: Super Intelligence (SI) Scenario Challenge ✨
Super Intelligence (SI) can help students explore how informal English changes across different situations, relationships, and purposes. 🤖
In this activity, students use SI to create a conversation, but the learning goes beyond generating text. They analyze language choices, decide whether expressions fit the situation, and adapt the conversation to make it sound more natural.
By connecting language with context, learners develop a better understanding of how informal English works in real communication. | 373 |

| 9 | 🌟 Culture Share Saturday: North Carolina 🌟
✈️ North Carolina’s state slogan, which you’ll often see on car license plates, is “First in Flight.” Interestingly, Ohio has a similar state slogan — the “”Birthplace of Aviation.”” Both North Carolina and Ohio claim the Wright brothers’ achievement because different parts of the process happened in each state. Ohio is where the brothers lived and built the airplane, while North Carolina is where they completed the first successful flight.
🍖 The word “barbeque,” often shortened to “BBQ,” can be confusing in English! Sometimes it refers to a specific cooking style, and sometimes it’s used to refer to an event or type of meal. It’s important to pay attention to the context to understand what this word means. People across the U.S. also have different opinions on which kind of sauce to use for barbecue. North Carolina often uses a vinegar-based sauce, while other places use sweet or tomato-based sauces.
🖤 North Carolina is called the “Tar Heel State.” This unique nickname is due to its historical tar industry. Tar workers often handled sticky tar all day, sometimes barefoot, so it would literally get on their heels. Tar was an important resource in early American history because it supported our transportation network.
💡Classroom Activity: Culture Interview
Students interview a partner about a traditional food, local expression, or cultural custom, practicing questions and follow-up responses in English. | 588 |
| 10 | 📚 Vocabulary Friday: “Get the Creative Juices Flowing”
Meaning: To stimulate imagination and inspire new ideas.
🎨 Teachers are always looking for ways to get the creative juices flowing—whether it’s designing an engaging classroom activity, encouraging students to express themselves through writing, or finding innovative ways to make learning more meaningful.
Sometimes, a little inspiration and a fresh perspective are all we need to spark creativity, explore new possibilities, and make learning more engaging and enjoyable. ✨ | 623 |
| 11 | ✨Thursday Teaching Activity ✨
🎬 Movies, TV shows, and online videos expose students to forms of English that rarely appear in traditional learning materials. They offer valuable opportunities to hear how people use informal language in everyday situations.
This activity encourages students to move beyond simply understanding a scene. By noticing, interpreting, and adapting the language they hear, learners can develop a deeper understanding of how informal English is used in authentic contexts. | 613 |
| 12 | ✨ Wednesday Spotlight: Meet Our Virtual English Language Specialist!
Dr. Jennifer Boots is a professor of ESL and English at San Diego City College in California, USA. With more than 20 years of experience in higher education, she specializes in English language teaching, curriculum design, and teacher professional learning. She is passionate about connecting educators across cultures and promoting authentic communication, learner-centered teaching, and instructional innovation.
One of Jennifer’s favorite ways to connect with others is through food! A few years ago, she created a class cookbook project where students shared meaningful family recipes and the stories and traditions behind them.
What began as a writing assignment became something much more—a celebration of cultural diversity, shared experiences, and learning from one another.
Reflection Question: How can teachers use food, family traditions, and personal stories to encourage authentic communication and build connections in their English language classrooms? | 670 |

| 15 | 🍑 Culture Share Saturday: Georgia
🎓The University of Georgia was the first state-chartered university in the United States. Even more remarkably, Wesleyan College, located in Macon, Georgia, was the first college in the world chartered to grant degrees to women!
🥤 Coke, soda, or pop? What do you call a fizzy drink? In many parts of Georgia, people commonly use the word Coke to refer to soft drinks in general, while other Americans say soda or pop. It’s a fun example of how language changes from one region to another!
🐊 Georgia is home to the Okefenokee Swamp, the largest blackwater swamp in North America. It is a remarkable wetland filled with wildlife, including alligators, turtles, and many species of birds.
🍑 The Three P’s of Georgia! Georgia is known for its agricultural products: peanuts, pecans, and peaches. Although Georgia is nicknamed The Peach State, peanuts and pecans are also important parts of its agricultural identity.
💡Classroom Activity: The Three P’s Challenge
Introduce the three P’s: peanuts, pecans, and peaches. Students match each word to a picture, describe its taste or appearance, and discuss how it is used in food.
Then, in small groups, students invent a new snack or product featuring one or more of the three P’s.
They must give it a name and create a short advertisement.
Example: “Try our Georgia Peach Crunch! It’s sweet, fresh, and delicious!” | 840 |
